a ' ' 4- V V) 4 WJf j X ' . f ' i jJ U n a foggy early December morning in 1924, Aimee Semple McPherson JS j % L turned tlie first of four spades of earth. It had been nearly two years since ' . I - . •. T sVi the Bible Training Institute had opened in the parsonage of Angelus Temple. Along with the constant growth of the Temple, the Bible School expanded until it had to find permanent quarters of its own. Thus, Sister McPherson and her co-laborers struck out on faith and broke ground for the desperately needed Bible School facilities. As God-inspired institutions seek to follow the Lord ' s leading, there are changes as time progresses. Not the change of founding principles, nor of guiding truth, but as institutions are vehicles of accomplishing God ' s purposes they change in order to better fulfill the Lord ' s will and work. LIFE Bible College has changed greatly in the more than fifty years since its founding. Inits early years the school had several names, including Echo Park Evangelistic and Missionary Training Institute and International Institute of Foursquare Evangelism. The present name was finally decided upon in 1927. The crowded classes moved quickly from the parsonage to the 500 Room of the Temple. This too soon proved inadequate but it was over ' i . T ' ' %By5__ l three years before the reinforced concrete building was ready for classes. ™ ' - • • ' ' ' ■' - ■The new, large structure experienced constant use as a Bible school during the week and as a Sunday School building for the Temple on Sunday. The first floor auditorium held the over-flow crowds for the services. In the late 1920 ' s a Preparatory Department was started which functioned as a high school. Those young people who could not stay in public school because of the constant teaching of evolution, received a full high school education. These special students at the College were called Cadets. Thus, LIFE proved itself flexible in order to meet the needs of the church and community. From a two year institution, LIFE has become a four year school which offers both a Bachelor ' s degree in Bible and in Religious Education. The Library, expanded and equipped ' through the generous efforts of the Alumni Association, is now in the midst of another expansion program to increase its size, quality and service to the Bible School in order to meet higher standards. The school ' s administration - marked by a history of stability - has experienced significant changes. In the mid-1 960 ' s the Office of the Dean of Students was created in order to serve the student body. As of this year, the College will be administrated by its own Board of Regents. This year we have achieved a major step toward accreditation with the American Association of Bible Colleges by advancing to the Candidate Status. Amid these changes, this school year saw a great change in administrative personnel , including a new Executive Director, Dean of Students and Business Administrator. As the four shovels of earth symbolized constant change for the infant Bible Training Institute, they speak to us of the constant change that we experience as we follow the Lord ' s leading. The College is now entering into a new phase of its life - there is a new governing body, and a new administration - all of this is to better serve the original purpose of the school: to train men and women for the service of Christ. The Lord has given us scripture and teaching to guide us as we make these changes. At the beginning of this year we heard how Joshua was instructed and instructed the priests to carry the Ark into the Jordon. The people followed — but at a distance. This shows us that when God leads us into some new dimension of our lives, we must let Him show us the way — we must follow His leading, because. . . • . ' . Forms, forms, forms... You ' ve got the cutest little baby face. Call me, irresistible.. Well, if you think I look funny - you should see Dr. Van Cleave! Hello! My name is Jim Phillippiand I would like to thank all of you for this lovely, new, green hat!.. THE FOLLOWING ARE EXCERPTS FROM DR. VAN CLEAVE ' S ADDRESS TO THE FALL 1976 CONVOCATION (Sermon text was Joshua 3:2-4) Now I think the expanding christian life has three aspects: first of all, it is a life of winning victories, in the second aspect, it is a life of constant discipline and obedience. And finally, it is a life of continuous possession of God ' s promised land. My friends, there are many battles ahead for you and your expanding, growing Christian life, but those battles that are important, God is going to give you by faith. Unless we go forth from this school disciplined, all the academic excellence of the classroom will be of little value. Far be it from me to be anti-intellectual, but on the other hand, unless we are submitted to God and to one another, we will have little value as ministers. Joshua told the children of Israel to go behind the Ark of the Covenant, stay 2,000 cubits behind it. Let God lead the way! You ' re going to possess the land because the Ark of the Covenant goes before you. The Holy Spirit will lead the way - Divine power will lead the way, and you will win the victory because you follow the Ark of the Covenant! Finally, in the ever expanding Christian life it will be a life of possession of God ' s land! How important to our lives constantly learning the will of God. In fact that is a very important part of this growing Christian life - learning to walk in the will of the God! My friends, if we don ' t do anything else during our years here, let ' s be filled with the Spirit! Let ' s learn the power of prayer! Let ' s have the mantle of God upon us! Let ' s experience God in our lives so that when we stand before those whom God will give us, the finger of God will cause us to stand out!... You see friends, as we grow in the Lord, no matter how many years we ' ve been In the ministry, when you come to a point when God says, you haven ' t been growing lately , submit your heart and life and grow! Then see what the Lord will do! And it is my prayer and my hope that when this year has been concluded, that every one of you will be able to say in your heart sincerely before the Living God, We mie not passed mis woxj before... It is the desire of the Directors that our ministers be not only well versed in the expostion of Scripture but also that they be able to minister that knowledge - in life changing power - to the needs of the world through the riiointing of Jesus Christ. This has been the hallr ark v. this College since its beginning. What the world neerls . knowledge and power. The Special Ministry Teams provide the opportunity for students to have first hand exposure to active ministry in present day circumstances. We have two Action teams that go out frequently to surrounding churches to minister at various services. In these situations the students involved are able to employ the different means of ministry that they have learned in school. On team M were Rick and Debbie Meyer, Steve Vagasy, Dennis and Linda Frey and Nick Capalia. Team S consisted of David Parr, David Blake, Jodell Herdt, Irene Archuleta, and Tom Hassel. There also are teams that go to homes for children. Those involved had the great joy of ministering - while still in school - to churches and in areas where people really needed the love of Jesus shown to them. It is imperative for graduation that each student proves that he has been involved in some form of ministry during his education. This is a safe-guard against those who intend to learn active ministry at the expense of some innocent congregation! 67 G. LAc).c). A? CotiVchtioh r A f y , d ' ' . . «-?«r«f| ' f ' 3.V f ; f i Wow!
