Our new teachers are Mr. Cobb, superintendentg Mr. Kohler, principalg and Mrs. Wood- ruff, commercial. Our capable faculty, with the coBperation of the students, has set up a new standard of scholarship. A series of Lyceum Lectures has been given in behalf of our althetic groups. The proceeds will be used to improve our sports equipment. We did not win honors in sports this year, but we did create character and sportsmanship. At a number of assemblies our GiPl8' Glee Club and the Choir exhibited their musical talents. Alexandria presented an assembly program at Summit on March 15, and in exchange we gave a similar program at Granville on April 22. Our Music Department also performed for P.T.A. through- out the year. Summit was well-represented at the Annual Spring Festimi with ll members in the All-County Chorus and 2 members in the A11- County Band. The main event of the year, according to the Freshman Class, was their initiation ceremony, October ls, ably conducted by the Seniors. Such tests of a stu- dentfs 'bravery and fortitude had never before been encountered until that night. They also had several entertaining class parties. The football homecoming dance on November l, sponsored by the Sophomore Class, was the highlight of the term for themg the queen and her attendants were presented at intermission. The first of several success- ful dances, was sponsored by the Junior Class on October 4. Their play, CAMPUS QUARANTINE, a riot of laughs and funny situations, presented on November 17, was their crowning achievement. They also entertained the Seniors grandly at the annual Jr.-Sr. Banquet on April 27. On January 16, the Seniors took their annual trip to Colum- bus to have class pictures taken. They saw many interesting and historical sights, often missed on just a casual trip. ' Finally on March 16, the Seniors, masters of theatrki art, threw their dignity to the winds and presented a mystery- comedy, THE HAUNTED HIGH SCHOOL, a play full of nerve-tingling thrills and spine-tingling chile. On May 12 solemnity prevaned at our Baccalaureate Service and on May 17, the Seniors, looking most decorous in their caps and gowns, bade us goodbye at Commencement Exercises. The older mem- bers initiated some new recruits in Oct. They took turns serving refreshments, furnishing enter- tainment and being guests for their monthly meetings. After examining and rating the work of English students, the teachers announced the Bulletin Staff. Parties still rate high and the Sophomores started the idea rolling by having an enjoyable weiner roast in an indoor fire- place when the rain chased them from an outdoor site. Not to be outdone by the other classes, the Seniors went to Ye Olde Mill at Utica for a weiner roast and skating party. A few tried some floor-cleaning antics but as a whole everyone rated an HAH for ability. The eighth graders still prefer a picnic party and had one at the Harbor Hills Club- house. The band sponsored a box social in the gym to raise funds for additional instruments. We had our annual Hallowe'en Carni- val October 51. We enjoyed a memorable Armis- tice Day assembly with our Prin. Mr. Kinner CLt. in World War ID and Russell Prince lSgt. in World war III explaining their inter- pretation of the American flag. Oh, yes, you say. That school has only a dozen students. What do you suppose they do with such a small enrollment? It must be a dull place. On the contrary, 1t's a rath- er lively little school. True, we miss competitive sports, but we have our own school basket ball teams, both for boys and girls. And with the boys furn- ishing a cheering squad for the girls, and the girls for the boys, the sounds from the gymna- sium nearly equal those coming from a tournament game. Early this year, the Freshmen gave a wiener roast for the rest of the high school and the sev- enth and eighth grades. Giving part of this party is always a the Freshmen initiation. The rest of it takes place at the creek near the school. On October 5, the high school sponsored a dance for the service men and women of our community who had received their discharges or were home on leave. The annual Halloween party with the traditional cider and doughnuts was next on our so- cial program. For the Junior dance, the weather man proved uncooperative, the evening being snowy and very cold. The music was excellent, however, and those attending the party reported the evening a very pleasant one. On December 17, Mr. Weiser and the Seniors journeyed to Co- lumbus to have the Senior pic- tures made at Baker's Art Gallery While in Columbus, they made a tour of the State House, the A. I. U. Building, and Ohio State University. Just before Christmas, we re- ceived an unexpected holiday when our school bus went over a cement abutment into the creek near the school. Fortunately, none of the students were in the bus at the time, and our driver waded out of the creek unhurt. The Fifth Ser- vice Command lifted the bus out with a crane, and after a few days in the garage, it was back on the job. The last event before the holidays was our Christmas party. We exchanged gifts, played games, and danced. For refreshments, we had cake and ice cream that we made in the morning. Mrs. Wilson, our English teacher, left at the end of the semester to join her husband who had been overseas. We surprised her with a farewell party and presented her with a gift. Her classes were taught by Mrs. Kreltler beginning with the sec- ond semester. The school entertained the Parent Teachers' Association in its first meeting of the year, by presenting a Wildcat Willie play. Next a Valentine party with cupids and hearts everywhere afforded an afternoon's relief from Algebra, Geometry, History, English, etc. We are looking forward now to a school play, the Junior-Senior Banquet, and the usual activities of the Commencement season. Do you still think that Union is a lifeless school? Add to the activities already mentioned, the times of discussion around the office table, Mr. Weiser's square one, not King Arthur's round oneg Mrs. Sackett's field trips--to see birds, they saidg the conver- sations while dresses, mittens, gloves, and scarfs were made with Mrs. Zwayer in Home Economics, and not by any stretch of the imagination can you call it a dull place. This may be the last year for the high school at Union. In the twenty-two years of this high school's existence, it has served its purpose well. Among our 140 graduates are representatives in many professions. We are proud to have doctors, nurses, veter- narians, teachers, office work- ers, farmers, engineers, and art- ists in our Alumni Association. There are a few more men teachers around the school lately,s1nce two former teachers have returned from Service. The indescribable, feverish tension ofthe war years is relaxing nowg and we consider it a good omen for the future that most people here are more interested in the United Nations than lnime Atomic Bomb. But you are probably wanting to know what we have been doing here in school. Well, we've been doing the usual things, much as you have: playing football, having assemblies, presenting plays and continuing our service and social club activities. Just now our interest is completely absorbed by basketball, the team having provided an exciting sea- son after being broughtxp rather abruptly by the pre-Christmas flu epidemic. We approach the tournament with a loop record of 16 wins and 5 losses--and we might add, very high hopes. Still speaking of sports, Granville was down inthird place in football this year, though our feelings were somewhat as- uaged by placing three of our players-Dirck Brown,Dick Cherry, and Frank Bowman-on the All- County First Team and Jack Piper and Bob Robertson on the Second Team. We considered Dick Cherry our most valuable player this year. Though we are losing several good mento gradu- ation, we have every intention of giving you allhot competition in the Fall of '46. Girl Reserves and H1-Y mem- bers think they have had a good year. The two clubs have had candy and popcorn concessions at the basketball games and so have helped their finances consider- ably. Both Clubs have recently been enjoying vocational dis- cussions by professional men and women of the community. Our other clubs, Delta Nu Kappa, dramatics, and Betty Lamp Club, homeeconom1cs,have been contrib- uting their share to our educa- tional and social growth, while the Journalism Class has managed to publish a paper bi-monthly. Our Chorus has also been active, having had out-of-school engage- ments at Denison, the Kiwanis Club and the local Methodist Church. You have been presenting some plays, naturally. So have we. In addition to short assem- bly plays, the Junior Class has offered publicly The N1 ht gf January 16. It was played to a g55H Hou55 and, we th1nk,was very successful. As this is being written, the Seniors are select- ing a play for their annual pro- duction in May. Those of you who are in the County Honor Society know that Granville members Lois Dixey, Gintsy Rodes, Dirck Brown, and Bob McWilliams joined you in welcoming into the Society Bill Utter, Frank Bowman and Flora Lee Jenk1ns.tom our Senior Class. Our space here is limitedg therefore, we cannot say more this t1me.We will lookfbr you at thevarlousinterschool functions. In the meantime, let us work to- gether for the best scholarship, the best competition, the best sportsmanship, the best schools, and, best of all, a brave new world. The officers of this year of Golden Jubilee are the fol- lowing: President, Jean Myers, Vice - President , Joe Warnerg Secretary - Treasurer, Dorothy Dixon. Due to an untimely visit of Mr. F. Lu Bugg we had an un- healthy and unhappy ten day va- cation as 1946 replaced the de- parting 1945. As a consequence of his visit we found ourselves celebrating the Holidays dur- ing the month of January. Not- able among the events were the beautiful rendition of W The Messiah' by the girls' chorus and the annual Christmas fes- tive celebration held by the Junior and Senior Hi. The graduates lack their former sentlmentality. Everyone had Valentine boxes--all but the sophisticated seniors whose juvenile tendencies have turned to senile prognostlcatlons. Wednesday , February 20th, witnessed the shooting of the county groups. Our sheep were driven to the fold in Newark to combine with others where the flock presented its annual off- ering on the sacrificial altar of Llckingana. The Annual Athletic Ban- quet was held ln the local gym on March fifteenth. Along with the honor and respect of the audience the elegibles were awarded their letters. May fourth--Oh, Happy day! We are now Seniors to be waited upon. The jun1ors--plebe1ans-- graciously entertained the sen- 1ors-- patrlcians-' during the Junior - Senior Banquet held at the Southern Hotel in Columbus. It was a delightful occasion which will hold a prominent place in our memories. In solemn array the seniors listened to the Baccaulaureate services Sunday eve, May nine- teenth. At this time they were brought to the realization that their school days at Homer H1 were nearing their close. This was further intensi- fied when they found themselves seated on the stage of the auditorium which was decorated in the class colors--royal blue and white. The class flower, the white rose, was a stunning contrast to the blue gowns. The class motto, 'Tonight we sail, where shall we anchorn, is evidence of our insatiable ambition. It is with reluctance that our sails are unfurled , we leave the safety of the harbor, and launch into the uncharted sea. However , our craft is seaworthy, our crew is well equipped for the voyage. Thus we face the future with confi- dence, courage, and faith. This page is sponsored by F. O. YOAKAM L 4. HUUIEE' 4 . E.
