Tiger Five Takes Close Second The Lick Varsity Basketball Team, superbly coached by Art Free, had an extremely successful season this year. Placing second in league competition, the Tigers won twelve games while dropping only two. This was undoubtedly the best team Lick has had since we entered the BCAL. The team's strength lay in eight regulars -two returning all-confer- ence stars, Bob Hammer and Tom Inman, returning first stringer Joe Pfister, two all-conference 3O's , and play-makers Phil Gambucci and Dave Ellert- son. During pre-season play, Lick stunned the Triple A circuit with a thrilling 53-49 upset over Galileo. In other practice games Lick defeated Westmore and Tomales Bay and bowed to Mission by only three points. Dramatically speaking, Lick lost the BCAL co-championship by one point. Had it not been for a fluke shot by Half Moon Bay with three seconds remaining, Lick would have tied Emery for first place. The season's most exciting game was played against Emery on our home court. Previously, Emery had beaten the Tigers by I8 points, and everyone expected a repeat performance-everyone except the team. Led by Tom ln- man's iump shooting, Steve Gantner's vicious rebounding, Chip Hunt's and Dave Ellertson's fine defensive game, the Tigers upset the Emery cagers 53-48, marking Emery's first defeat in thirty league games. The season was climaxed by the first annual Varsity-Alumni game in which former Lick All-Stars won by one point in an exciting contest.
