The dedication of the Butler Lake Building of Libertyville-Fremont High School repre- sents not only the completion of a magnificent physical structure for education, but also the completion of .1 phase of community expansion. This is the challenging phase of com- munity growth, It challenges the resources of the citizens to find the means to provide for education and passes on the challenge to the students and teachers to make the most of that education. We've all been kept pretty busy chasing between buildings, and to add to the confusion, we can't tell the Frosh from the Seniors. They both get lost so easily. 13. The Brainerd Building seems to have been in- vaded by little people. No, they aren't Martians, just the first day of Nursery School. QWe're letting them use some of our rooms.j 15. Who are the Grende1s the Senior girls keep talking about? See Mr. Tipler-Chief Grendel. 16. Such pep! What cheering! We go to our first pep meeting. 17. Nobody is here today, not even the teachers. Oh, there's a teachers' meeting in Evanston! 18. Palatine comes to see us, but we don't think they are very good guests because they beat us 25-6. 22. Who are all those little girls walking around wearing baby bonnets? Are their heads cold? just Big and Little Sister Day for G.A.A. 25. We play Barrington today but just don't quite make it. They beat us 17-15. 30. The last day of September. Can you believe it, we've had school for seventeen whole days! It seems like a year! OCTOBER 1. What a way to start a month!! We beat McHenry by a touchdown in the first few minutes of play. Score 6-0. 4. Wow! Look at those uniforms. The band shows off for the first time in their new outfits. 11. We vote for the top fifteen candidates for home- coming queen in lunch hour today. 13. We vote for the fifteen for homecoming queen. Wait!! Somehow that sounds familiar. Oh, now we understand. They left somebody's name off, and we have to vote over. We sure hope they're not going to make a habit of this. 14. They are!! Again it's the case of the forgotten name, and again we vote. 16. We play Warren and beat them on their home- coming. Nice, huh? 18. The final vote for queen. 19. Doctor William Clyde tells us to discover and use our ability. 22. This year we broke the snake dance tradition and have decided to have an evening pep rally. The Senior girls really look lovely as they do a parody on Paul Revere's ride. It's good to see all the alums back for homecoming. In between each act, one member of the court is announced. At the very last when the suspense is high, Barb Nickoley is an- nounced as queen. Members of her court are Barb Cazel, Joyce Hill, Lola Lange, and Alice Rouse. Aft- er a bonfire we all go to a free show given by the Liberty theatre. 23. Homecoming. The event waited for all year! Everyone is busily working on floats. Then the pa- rade and most important the game. We beat Wood- stock but good! In the evening the dance. 24. Everybody relaxes and tries to figure out what they are going to do with all the napkins they have stuffed in chicken wire. 25. We're all shocked back into reality as grades come out for the first time, and we try to invent reasons not to go home. 29. Zion beats us and captures first place, but the only reason they can do it is because we're practically frozen as the thermometer dips near freezing. A certain amount of points and a heart check-up must be obtained before a girl can join. She may be dropped at any time during the year if she lacks the basic requirements. The club's activities started this year with speedball. soccer. baseball. and archery. continuing until early November. Our first regular meeting was held on Thursday. September 16. at Adler Park. At this meeting. names for Little Sisters were drawn. and the girls had a picnic supper. On XX'ednesday September 22. our Little Sisters came to the Big and Little Sister Party as space babies. It was agreed that everyone of them looked just out of this world October rolled around with the Play Day at XX'arren on the 16th. XX'ith Homecoming came VUe'll Stock Our XX'oodpile with You, the G. On November 9, the cafeteria was changed into a backwards atmosphere. This was the date of the Senior Turn About Banquet. We were fortunate to have a quartet made up of Miss Bond. Miss Aurell. Miss johnson and Miss Murphy. who demonstrated their talents in singing Loyal and True backwards. On November Zo. ten G. A. A. members. with Miss johnson as Advisor. attended the playday at Lake Forest. Santas XX'orkshop was the setting of the Mother and Daughter Tea held on December 9 in the cafeteria. The room was decorated by figurines painted on the windows. a Christmas tree decorated with toys. and small angels decorating the tables. At the December G. A. A. meeting Miss Bond was presented with a gift of a Parker 55 pen from all of the G. A. A. members. Much to their sur prise. on December 20 the G. A. A. cabinet was given a Christmas party by Miss Bond. The middle of january came with great pleasure to all G. A. A. members. The gym could again be used for G. A. A. activities. Also during january. the cabinet gave a pot-luck dinner for all freshman girls who were interested in joining G. A. A. The purpose of this was to get better ac- quainted with the Frosh. On February 14. we entered the G. A. A. Bowling Tournament in which we placed fifth in the N i state. i 'ice going girls. Thanks to Nancy Dietz we placed third in individual scoring. The Fresh- man squaws were initiated into G. A. A. at the Sophomore Pow-XX'ow on February 16. The initia- tion consisted of stunts and a formal candle lighting ceremony. On February 18. G. A. A. sponsored the Pennant Parade after-game dance. the proceeds of which went to the fund for purchasing pen- nants for the gym. Twenty sharp-shooters entered the basketball shooting contest on March 1'. The annual Dad's Night was held this year on March 23 and 24. As usual. a good time was had by all. even though there were a few aches and pains expressed by those Dads that attended. The All-Star games were held on March 15 and 16. The winning Freshman. Sophomore. junior, and Senior teams played off for the championship. XX'ith basketball finished, volleyball came on the scene in the gym area. As in basketball. the volleyball tournaments were played off and the champion team was named. Spring activities. Frank Wellwerts called an unusually fine game and threw to Larry Ray and Tom Jensen for long gains. im Collins intercepted a pass and ran it for a touchdown. but it was called back on a quick whistle. The following week our team experienced their roughest game with Wfarren. Everyone played to win and there were many injuries. The game almost ended in a brawl. but thanks to quick thinking our team was ushered from the field. After winning this game our team gained first place in the conference race. Larry Brickert and Chuck Jarrett, along with our defensive line, led the Wildcats to a 14 to 6 victory over XVOodstock at our Homecoming. In our next game we lost to a power- ful Zion team. We showed good spirit but could not stop their single wing platoon led by their hard-driving fullback, Osman. Heinie Jarrett played his best game gaining many yards but not enough to defeat this team who won the North Suburban Conference. In our last game we finally conquered our arch rivals, Lake Forest, with a 19 to 7 score. Chuck Jarrett and Steve Bolander led the running attack while Craig McRae, Ken XX'y'man, and Dick Wfeidner stopped their offensive progress. XVith this game we closed a very successful football season at L.F.H.S. The 1954 Varsity football team, besides capturing second place in the conference race, boasted many honors. They had five men make the North Suburban Conference team. Jim Arena captured the center sport. Dick Weidner and Craig McRae took over the guard positions while Larry Ray and Tom Jensen held down the end positions. Larry Brickert and Allan Archbold would surely have made all-conference honors if they had not been sidetracked because of injuries. I am also sure that if there was a defensive all- conference team Ken Wyman would have been right in the center of the line along with Heinie arrett at line backer Another honor that went to Dick Weidner was being top man on the tackle chart with 90 tackles He was followed by Ken Wyman who had 80 tackles Craig McRae who had 62 and Larry Ray and Heinie Jarrett who had 56 The leading ground gamer based on estimates was Chuck Jarrett The Junior Varsity football squad coached by Bob Kelton emerged at the top of the conference this year The team came through with a record of seyen victories and no losses They came very close to be ing unscored upon surrendering only nine points to their opponents The only close game was the last game with Zion which we won in the last quarter The team spirit and fight accounted for the good season The top place in the scoring column was cap tured by Hemie arrett who played in only four of the games He was followed by Ron Gardner who tallied most of the extra points The defense was the mam reason only two teams scored upon the V s Mike Traynor Art Sorby Jerry Hagerty Bob Thor son and Jim Fredensborg attributed for most of the tackles Buddy Ashcraft called the signals and threw the ball to Romeo Mura for good yardage Ned Wood and Buddy Van Aken rounded out the back field and were yery important in the scoring column The 1954 team will form a yarsity squad that will be hard to defeat JUNIOR VARSITY SCORES 6 They Lake Forest Barrington Waukegan Crystal Lake Warren Woodstock Zion The Freshman football team under the leadership of Henry Kimball boasted a 3 4 record this season They started out slowly but took their last three games easily Some of the mainstays in the line were Dick Hall and Don Horn at guard position along with M Gaddis at tackle Tony Wood called the signals and did some nice passing to Wally Sitz and Paul Beauyars for some long yardage The team had good spirit and vue expect great things from them next year i VFW First row: Van Aken, Traynor, Fredensborg, Lindgren, Craft, jazwiec, Sorby. It is a real tribute to Coach Andy Hook that his players kept this spirit and fight after losing so many' games by' just a few points The leading scorer was Larry' Ray' with oyer 320 points followed by' Dick XVeidner. The L Club, one of the most active groups in L.F.H.S., participated in many events this year. They, along with the Senior boys, guarded the Freshmen at the Snake Dance. This year they set standards for obtaining your major letter in sports. The L Club went into debt again after their purchase of 16MM film. These films were used for filming the football games. Later at chalk talks the coach pointed out the teams mistakes seen on the films. To make money the L men moved chairs for the Boys' Club and sold wildcat cushions at basketball games. The club also sponsored an extra dance on March the twenty-fifth. Prerident ........... Vice President ..... BILL SMITH rom JENsEN Serrelafy ........... ............................. LAKE COUNTY MEET: Libertyville placed third with 20 points. 1 V2 X2 The Varsity track team, composed mostly of 'lun- iors, experienced a successful season. They started out with a loss to Palatine but were quick to recover. Our team proved their depth and scoring ability by outpointing Warren 100 to 14, Wauconda 87V2 to 25V3, and Crystal Lake 84V2 to 25V2. Our team lost to Barrington who had an exceptional team. We also dropped a close one to Lake Forest, losing by two points. We scored well in our meet with Zion- Benton scoring 77 points. Our team did not fare too well in relay events this year. In the Dekalb and Palatine relays Larry Ray and Dick Carson were the only point getters. We captured third in the North Suburban conference being nosed out by the Lake Forest team. Closing up our season at the Lake County Meet at Highland Park, we scored in almost every event. Larry Ray qualified at the District Meet and went to the State Track and Field meet. Errors again were the deciding factor in most of the games. Larry Brickert paced his team with a sizzling .474 batting average. Bruce Rouse and Willy Newman were the hurlers while Bud Rech and Cobb Miller backed them up. The infield consisted of Collins and Foy alternating at first, Brickert at second, Wellwerts at short, and Gurtowski at third. Parson, Dortch, Von- dracek, Kahl, Wells, and Jensen covered the outfield. Coaching for the season was Kelly Cox. The junior boys took charge of the bonfire on the night before Homecoming, and the junior Class spon- sored a float in the Homecoming Parade. The class spent much of November working on the production of the junior play. It was a three-act comedy entitled You Can'l Take It Wfirb You. which was about a family of individualists. Class rings were ordered in October, and the juniors sponsored an all school dance which was held on january 29. The junior Prom was held on May 21, in the Butler Lake Building. In spring the students planned courses for their senior year and elected officers and Student Council representatives. Much time was devoted to preparation for college and future careers.
