Foreword 1917 A glimpse into the Nautilus of 1918 shows a quite different Liberty' ville Township High School from the one we know today. The first graduating class in the history of our school boasted ten students. There were seven faculty members, consisting of five Women and two men, to teach the one hundred students enrolled. The board of education worked untiringly for the good of the new school. Football was eliminated from the athletic schedule because of a lack of sufficient material. To compensate for this, however, basketball prac' tice was started at an early date, enabling the team to become very profif cient. There was no regular league, but games were played against such towns as Area, Zion, Wauconda, and Waukegan. Track was the next athletic venture, for which fifteen or twenty boys turned out. Baseball was practiced only during lunch hours, under the direction of Mr. Under' brink. These practices were enough, however, to enable the teams to overcome their rivals. The Athletic Association was a group of boys corresponding to our L Klub. The girls also exhibited their skill in basketball at public games. The athletic contests were, as now, a main part of the social activities. In 1917, the only organizations to speak of were the student council, the orchestra, the glee club, and the first aid class. The orchestra, conf sisting of eight musicians, appeared at a number of student activities and meetings of the ParentfTeacher Association. The glee club, made up of thirty members, appeared publicly many times during the year and pro' duced an operetta. A desire for student government resulted in the organ' ization of the Student Council of Control. This group was composed of two freshmen and three students from each of the upper classes. The first aid class, an organization for girls, gave a practical knowledge of first aid. ,As a whole, the school of twentyffive years ago was a fine progressive one, and far above the average of that time.
