1936 RED AND BLACK 17 The First Semester Budget Staff Journalism Although the Journalism department is probably the smallest in the school, it plays a very large part in the school life. The staffs of the Budget, the school paper which is issued every two weeks, are chosen from the advanced journalism classes. Most of the Red and Black staff is chosen from the Journalism classes also. Miss Iva Belle Harper is the sponsor of both publications. Events in this department during the year included the State Journalism Conference at the University of Kansas which was attended by twenty-three representatives from I.. M. H. S.g and the annual assembly presented by the Red and Black. During the first semester, Mr. Jerome Beatty, a former student of Lawrence High School, spoke to a combined group of the journalism classes about his experiences as a writer and gave some advice to would-be authors. This meeting with Mr. Beatty was considered the outstanding event of the year forithc journalism students. Mr. Jerome Beatty, '04, Helen. Nuranzore, Mr. Wherry
