We entered as timid Freshmen. we leave as graduates bold, And we find it hard to realize the knowledge our young head: hold. wa 4, We've had our foolish notions knocked higher than Frnnklin's kite: Our minds have been made over, and we know it served ua right. We've spent four years in labor hard to prove the fact once more That life is quite confused, and two and two are seldom four. We're crammed to the brim with learning, and now we must turn it to uae, And if one of us is a failure, he hasn't n single excuse. The more we work and the lean we talk the better results we shall get, For we've had four years of training: it may make us successes yet. skrllfully dlsregarded all the rules of drama With your klnd permlssxon I in an absolutely unbrased manner shall revrew the play ent1tled The Class of 1950 Th1s is a play 1n four acts w1th three all too bnef lntemxlsslons The play was wntten by the actors as they played their parts under the d1rect1on of our pnncrpal Mr Don Kesler and a band of capable BSS1Sf,8!ltS the faculty This play belongs to no partrcular C1aSSif1C8t10I1 belng at vanous stages comedy and tragedy The scenes all take place 1n the hlgh school bu1ld1ng in comdors classrooms the aud1tor1um and the gym nasrum The sett1ngs are p1a1n show1ng Slgl'lS of much use ACT I shows the amval of the class 1n the halls of learning Their tlm1d1ty and curious m1stakes fumish some bnght comedy moments There ls raprdly ns1ng act1on and the villain gradually puts rn an appearance He lS called Study and is of alarming size and proportrons It IS evident that he will 1nterfere sadly wrth the enjoy ment and leisure of the actors now known as Freshmen During this act whrch was under the d1rect1on of our homeroom teacher Mr John I-Iardw1cke we were permxt ted to form an orgamzatlon of our own which had the follow1ng l1st of officers President Buddy Sf-fickla-Hd V1ce-Pres1dent Nancy Faust Secretary Ruth Cheek Treasurer Thomas H0m8Cla.Y At the close of the act tragedy seems immrnent as there ls a desperate affair a mental cr1s1s created by Study s brother villain Exammatlons But almost all of the 46 Freshmen by one last spurt of the1r tlred bra.ms W1 The curtain of the first act falls on the reJo1c1ng Freshmen who are nevertheless not wholly free from a safely passed the worst IS yet to come The actors are pleasing but dec1dedly a.mateur1sh After a brief intemusslon of 12 weeks the play rs resumed ACT II shows the same people rn the same place but they are now known as Sophomores owmg to an ad vance of rank A touch of pathos IS found 1n the absence of several of the cast who were so d1sabled 1n the encounter with Study s ally Exam1nat1ons that they were unable to appear 1n the second act Under the directxon of Mr Douglas Dlckerson the sophomores now 42 in number elected the follow1ng offr cers for their class orgamzation President Buddy Strlckland Vice-President Ffa-Uk Y0l'k Secretary Verla Plckett Treasurer Jean Th0m8S In thrs act the members of the cast seem to have achleved not1c1bly lackrng in ACT I Inc1p1ent love a ffalrs are not1ced and the costumes are much more elab- orate as lS also the make up used There IS a pleasant d1vert1ssement 1n thelr tr1p to Ralergh where they had the privilege and honor to shake hands w1th Gregg Cherry who was then govemor of North Carol1na Another outstandrng event on thrs trlp was therr vis1t to radro statron W P T F' Yet the mentlon of Study casts a gloom over the bnght ness More time IS spent than before 1n preparatxon agamst the enemy and the preparat1on IS more systemat1c There also seems to be more mental act1v1ty 1n the protagomst The actlon continues to r1se t1ll the end of the act when we agarn have the lnevltable stmggle and the cns1s brought about by the Exammatrons Agam the class wrns thanks to the t1me spent 1n prepa.rat1on Another 12 weeks 1nterm1ss1on and we stagger ln for ACT III The actors are so changed that each act seems like an ent1rely new play They are now called Jumors Their posrtron and the1r prlde have both advanced but there rema1ns the hauntmg dread of Study the v1lla1n The d1rector Mrs Margaret Jlartln allows the actors now 39 1n number much more freedom than they have pre vlously enJoyed whxch results 1n an lmprovement of the performance by many There are some dellghtful lnterludes to make thls a cheerful act The Jumors gave the Senrors a banquet based upon a Gay N1net1es theme at the Town Hall of L1berty N C on May 8th 1949 By th1s txme some of the actors all of whom entered the cast on a footlng of equal1ty have come more prom1 nently mto the spotlxght and the1r parts are assumrng al most stellar proportlons by thelr havlng gaxned outstandlng honors as marshals of the Jumor Class They are as fol lows Buddy Stnckland chief Gladys K1mrey Frank York Maenne Clapp and Amold Hogan Offlcers for our Jun1or Class orgamzatxon were elected as follows Pres1dent Sammy James Vxce Pres1dent Barbara Jones Secretary Treasurer Ruth Cheek Before the curtain falls there IS the dreaded yet certa.1n confl1ct but Study s emissary Exammatlons IS defeated agaln Agaxn an 1nterm1ss1on of 12 weeks wh1ch both audlence and actors greatly enjoy perhaps because they real1ze there IS but one more act to follow There lS an atmos phere of gayety that even the thought of study cannot completely dlspel ACT IV amves at last and IS warmly rece1ved By th1s t1me the actors are so matured so at ease so changed for the better that they are drfflcult to recogn1ze We seem to view the rose-colored spectacles the scene that so soon w1ll vamsh It looks lmDOSSlb1y attract1ve We have grown honestly fond of all the cast some of whom we regarded w1th anything but favor as the curtam rose on the flrst act of th1s unusual play Even that arch v1lla1n Study seems less formidable The action IS more rapld and more compllcated than 1n there are some delightful lnterpolat1ons The Sen1ors were given a wonderful banquet on May 6th 1950 by the Junior Class Sxxteen members of our class presented the three-act Sen1or play entltled Who wouldnt Be Cram' 1n Aprll 1950 This dlglllfled stately group of Seniors took a trip to our natlon s capital Washlngton D C 1n Apnl 1950 Under the d1rect1on of Mrs Howard Johnson thesemor Class composed of 35 members was organized wlth the followmg offxcers Presldent Sammy James V1ce Presldent Barba.raJones Secretary Treasurer Maerlne Clapp The actors who showed pronuse of belng stars in the preceding act have fulfrlled that prom1se and sh1ne bnghtly They are as follows Barbara Jones valedxctonan and Jean Thomas salutator1an The entire production attains a smoothness and a finish that are very pleasmg Desplte all the gayety gnm preparahons are golng on to the end that those who are now stars may remaln so and that others may contlnue 1n the cast at all At last the fatal hour amves and the Fmal Examx natlon ralses hrs s1n1ster head The attack of the Senlors IS brave and well orgamzed The result of concentratxon IS apparent the Senxors emerge victorlous They have f1n1shed Study who met face to face is found to be not an enemy but a frxend and an 1nvaluable ally to possess throumout l1fe The strenuous preparatxon for battle wh1ch made our cast more and more famllxar Iwrth Study was a bless1ng1n dlsgulse and everybody is al-'DDY The play ends 1n a burst of glory w1th flowers mus1c and congratulatrons 1n short graduatwn exerc1ses and we have the well known and ever popular happy endmg Lynda Vestal H1stor1an O 'n. This was also a good season for Coach Dave McClenny in his first year at Liberty.
