Home Economics today is education for home and family life: and the curriculum is built around the activities, needs, and interests of all phases of home living. As we open the door and step inside the Home Economics Department, our eye is caught by the homelike atmosphere. The severe, laboratory atmosphere is a thing of the past. The Foods Room sets the pattern for the modern home kitchen. Six L -shaped kitchens done in bone ivory and sea crest green provide every possible need for the small family group of pupils assigned to them. Some of the features that make kitchen work easier include: three-inch recessed toe space on all base unite: shelves that glide out as the cabinet door is opened thus eliminating stooping and reaching: dust-proof drawers: wall cupboards with shelves adjustable to one inch spacings: linoleum tops with raised edges on stainless steel banding to prevent spilled liquids from run- ning over on cabinets and floors: and a back splash to protect kitchen walls. Both gas and electric ranges are used. To add a decorative touch what-not shelves are placed by the sinks. Here in this ideal Foods Room menu plan- ning, food preparation and serving, table manners, party food, nutrition, con- sumer buying, kitchen planning, and the selection and arrangement of equip- ment are studied. From the Foods Room we enter the well-lighted and well-equipped Clothing Boom. Important is the system of individual drawers, interchange- able from sewing case compartments to table compartments, which has greatly lessened the confusion in large clothing classes. Besides practical construction, the selection and care of clothing and household fabrics is studied. Mrs Harold Turner A popular place, made possible under the new building program of 1949, is the school cafeteria, managed by Mrs. Harold Turner. It is second to none in this part of the state. It has a seating capacity of 200 students and is furnished with the most modern equipment. The cafeteria is approved by the state for serving a class A luncheon, which will provide from one-third to one-half of a student's daily nutritional requirements. The number of lunches served has averaged about 550 a day. The cafeteria is able to serve an excellent lunch at the low price of Sl a week because the state furnishes a subsidy of seven cents for each lunch with milk, and five cents for a lunch without the milk. In addition to the subsidy, the federal government donates some surplus commodities which enrich the school lunches without adding anything to their cost. The cafeteria has operated on the principle that it has an educational as well as a nutritional duty to perform. An attempt has been made to teach children to eat a wider variety of wholesome food than they might have learned to eat at home.
