Looking back through the years. we remember our freshmen year. The Class of 1 BBS was led by Patrick Grimes. president: Kina Gray, vice-president: Karla Lorenzetti, secretary. and Gina Andronico. treasurer. The advisors in their first year were Mrs. Chris Weber and Mr. Bruce Campion. To help raise money. the class had a candy sale and a car wash. The freshmen received a first in the Homecoming activities that year. Alfred Arroyos was president our sophomore year. The other officers were: Karla Lorenzetti. vice-president: Suzette Riley. secretary: and Janice Paulson, treasurer. Mrs. Weber continued as an advisor, while Mr. Dennis Hitchens replaced Mr. Campion. The class sold sweatshirts. sponsored the Turnabout Dance. and along with the Class of 'B4. sponsored the Sophomore HopfJunior Prom. At the Hop, Tami Sherman was crowned oueen and Scott Wilgenbush was our King. During Homecoming, The Super Sophomores of 'BE-'BB won second place in both the float and spirit competition. Leading our junior year, was Robin Pastor. Gina Andronico served as vice-president: Senna Shanti was . and Janice Paulson was treasurer. Dur new advisors that year were Ms. Marian Canepa and Mr. Mark Johnson. We started this junior year over SS. DDD in debt because of the disastrous sweatshirt sale the previous year. With Luck the class of 'BS was able to break even and gained some profit by the end of our junior year. The class of 'B5 did this by continuing their sweatshirt sale and selling booster badges and Candy grams. Also we held three dances: The St. Patrick's dance. The Junior Prom and the Goodbye to the Class of 'Bd dance. The class worked very hard in orderto start earning money to put on a Senior Ball next year. The class 'l SB5's float Beachin' 'B5 won a second place at Homecoming. The class took first in the Spirit competition. Finally. our long-awaited Senior Year. Dur Class officers this year were: Robin Pastor. presidentg Darrell Ddell, vice-president: Senna Shanti. secretary: Jim Johnson, treasurer. Dur advisors continued to be Mr. Johnson and Ms. Canepa. Although the Class of 'B5 had little in the treasury in September, they successfully overcame the lack of funds to put on a super Senior Ball. The total cost of the Senior Ball was about SS.DDD. It was held at the Sheraton Palace in San Francisco. lt was the very first year a Senior Ball was allowed to be held across the Bay in San Francisco. Close to three hundred people attended this event on June 'l , 'l BBS. The Senior Class had earned money by selling candy, holding a bake sale. and putting on successful dances: The Homecoming dance. St. Patrick's Dance, and the Senior Ball. During Homecoming, the Seniors won the Spirit competition for the second year in a row. The class chose Tami Sherman and Ron Turchie as the Dueen and King. At Graduation, the Seniors donated a plaque to the school. The plaque. bearing Herb R. Scott's name. will be placed at the end of F-wing, renaming the wing. Scott Hall. The Class of 'IBBS was led by Margaret Freeman, president. Bernie Sanabria, vice-president. Michele Trebino. secretary: and Heather Roemer, treasurer. The advisors were Mrs. Norma Eouinoa and Mr. Victor Thornhill. They sponsored two candy sales. a hot chocolate sale. and the Junior Prom. The Class of 'l SBS's float placed second during Homecoming. As seniors next year. they will look forward to a fun and successful year. Placing first in the Homecoming Float competition was the Class of 'B7. They were led by Carna Rodriguez. president: Shawn Schwitters, vice-presidentg Korrin Ghiselli, secretary. and Dafne Atreaga. treasurer. Mrs. Jeanne Partridge and Mr. Rod Beaver were the advisors. The sophomores had a candy sale and hosted the Sophomore I-lop. At the Sophomore Hop. the class of 'B7 crowned Dafne Arteaga and David Martinez as their Gueen and King. This year's freshmen class, the class of 'BB, was the largest ever. The Baby Lions started at Liberty under the leadership of Michele Manko, presidentg Christine Addington, vice-president: Gina Speer. secretary: and Nicole Pinney, treasurer, The advisors were Mrs. Cathy Dickey and Mr. Tim McHugh. A candy sale was sponsored Dy the class. They did well in the Homecoming float competition, placing third. This year the classes of Liberty were BETTER THAN EVER! Good luck Class of 'l BBS. Deborah RULE 098 .S 4' SFJDRTS Better than Ever The year was better than ever in sports for the Lion teams. Championships dominated the scene as the Liberty athletes grabbed off 5 in winter sports alone. Both the girls' and boys' varsity basketball teams were undefeated in FAL play this season, the boys for the third straight year. Both teams earned trips to North Coast competition and qualified for the championship game, only to fall in the final game for both. The girls were paced by Debbie Geyser and Laura Goldman with generous assistance from Raula l-lale and lVlimi Fejes. Debbie won almost every award possible in basketball this season and was named Yearbook Female Athlete of the Year at the Award's Assembly in June. Raced by the superb playing of Sean Lasher and Scott Wilgenbush, the boys were awesome on both offense and defense this year. The girls finally beat their arch-rivals. Campolindo, not once but four times this season. The Lions hosted the first annual Stonebarger Basketball tournament and went on to beat arch-rival Antioch for the championship. Sean was named to honors both in the FAL and the East Bay. The trip to the championship of the North Coast is the furtherest of any team in the history of the school. Led by first year coach Rich Barrios, the jv girls' basketball team also captured a championship in the FAL. In wrestling, both the Varsity and jv teams captured their respective championships with Nlario Dchoa and Tony Darone earning berths to the State IVleet. Although injured, Tony made an outstanding effort at the State Nleet and finished in sixth place. The Varsity championship was their second straight, while the jvs had their first ever in the FAL. Both teams were undefeated in league matches. ln spring sports, the Lions continued to hang up team and individual championships. At the start of the Varsity softball season, Coach .Jerry Nliller announced his resignation effective at the end of the season. The girls made it interesting and did not sew up the championship until the final two games of the season. In fact. it wasn't until the final game of the season that the girls captured sole possession of first in the FAL. Debbie Geyser earned the most valuable player for the Varsity. Dther awards were top defensive player, Noel Clement: top offensive player, Wendy Haag: most inspiritational, Wendy Lunsford: and team captain was Nlelissa Cakebread. The jv girls led by Rich Barrios hit and ran their way to yet another championship in the FAL. In track. it was individuals who stood out. Raced by the fine running and hurdling efforts of Dave Roberts fmost valuable playerl Rat Grimes, Kevin Kalinowski ilong and triple jumpsl, and Tom lvlecham lshot put and discusl, the boys Varsity team struggled all season. Both Dave and Rat went to North Coast Trials, while Dave made it into the finals. Blake Bomben, .Jay Sadler, Jack Tellez, and Billy Bowers helped the inexperienced frosh-soph team earn respectability. Standout lvlarian Greunwald clawed her way to the State Meet in Sacramento and helped pace the girls' Varsity. Team mate Debbie lVlcBride made it to North Coast Finals, Terri Triechelt and Michele Stranahan both qualified for North Coast Trials in discus and shot put. Dther honors in track were most valuable award Efrosh-sophl .Jay Sadler: Varsity team captain, Tim Liddingtong most inspirational, Kevin Clutter: team captain, Debbie lv'lcBrideg most valuable award, Nlarian. Fred Dtto paced the Boys' Tennis Team and won the first FAL individual match ever for them. In swimming, the girls had eight participants that earned a trip to North Coast: while Scott Thompson became the first boy to ever Qualify from Liberty. lvlr. Fred Valverde and lVlr. Alex Aiello took over as the golf coaches with the tragic death of Herb R. Scott. lvlr. Tim IVlcl-lugh continued to coach the soccer team. In football. the Varsity team struggled all season and succeeded in winning their final game the season against Alhambra. The frosh team had a good season, while the jvs won their end of the Homecoming Game. Scott Flechsing was selected as the winner of the Yearbook Award for outstanding Senior Nlale Athlete: Debbie won for the girls. W55 CUBBICLJLLJIVI Better Than Ever TAD, ISD, and SASI, sounds like some type of alphabet soup, actually it signified the major changes that took place during the school year. The first day back to classes in September, students were greeted by lVlr. Tom l-limmelberg, principal, with the first announcement regarding TAD. Students were to learn that TAD Ctardy, attendance and disciplinel was to play a major role in their lives at school. The new policy was introduced to restrict the number of tardies and absences of all students. Financed by SIP, a committee of staff members started meeting in the Spring of 'B4 to work out the new policy to make students more accountable. To assist with the new policy, the district and SIP financed the purchase and installation of a new computer system that would not only keep track of attendance and tardies but also handle scheduling, grades, progress reports to parents and a number of other things. By the end of the first semester, the school dumped the old BECAP system and relied solely on SASI. lVlrs. Sue Fortner spent a huge amount of time learning the new system and educating others in its use. Students were quick to discover that violating the new TAD policy earned them either four hours of Saturday school or one or more days of ISD fin school detentionl. By the end of the second semester, over 'I 5D students were spending Saturday morning going to school. ln April a drilling company hit natural gas in a well adjacent to the Varsity baseball diamond. The resultant well would mean additional monies coming into the school for some much needed improvements in buildings and grounds. Portable City had ground-breaking ceremonies also in April. A construction company moved onto the campus and broke ground near the gym for the seven new portables that were to be ready for the opening of the B5-BB school year. This was the first phase of a building program that was to help the school increase its classroom space to accomodate 'I SDD students. Earlier in the year, Contra Costa County announced its selection for a new special education building to be housed on the campus. Construction was scheduled to start with the opening of school in 'I SSB. New to the staff for the 'I SBA-B5 school year were lvls. .lan NlcAIister who was scheduled to teach science and P.E. and coach swimming. lVlrs. Norma lVlcCain was hired to teach in the Business and lvlath Departments. Beplacing Dr. Phil Devine, lvlrs. lvlary Diffenderfer handled the play responsibilities, advised Playmakers. and taught in the Language Arts Department. With the retirement of lVlr. Allan Jones, lVlr. Tim Wilson was hired to lead the band and teach math. lvlr. Don Lopez continued to advise the FFA and was hired to handle the new ISD program. lVlr. Dennis I-lenderson changed from a sub to full-time teacher and was hired to teach in the Social Studies Department. With the tragic death of coach and math teacher l-lerb FI. Scott in lVlarch, lVlrs. .Joann Nash was hired to finish out the school year in the Nlath Department. With the Staff Becognition Dinner on .June 7, the school bid happy retirement to lVlr. Pay Fiamirez, bus mechanic: lVlrs. Billie Fortner, administrative secretary: lVlrs. Babe Griffin, bus driver: and lVlr. Lloyd Giles, custodian. Pins and awards were given to teachers and staff for 5, 'I D, 'I 5, BD, and 25 years of service to the district. Fieceiving E5 year recognition were lVlr. Ken Forlow, I.aPaIoma principal, and lvlrs.
