English class They had to scramble fast to sign up for the desired class before it was filled, as all the courses were offered on a first come, first served basis. English department chairman, Ellrie Von Schopp, explained that the department decided to take a new approach in teaching English to stu- dents in the upper three divisions. The department is offering a vari- ety of new courses on a quarterly basis. Each student will be permitted to select the course he would prefer, from a wide range of courses. A new teacher, Mr. john Macfar- lane, came to Liberty from Canada on an exchange program for one year. Mr. Oliver Bascom, an Eng- Iish teacher from Liberty went to Regina as the other part of the ex- change. 26

Department Raises Standards To lncoming freshmen are better pre- pared than ever before in mathe- matics according to Mr. Cverald Craw- ford, head of the mathematics de- partment. They are consuming more knowledge in the area of mathematics during their elementary school years. This requires the department to im- prove to meet rising standards. The mathematics teachers of Liber- ty initiated these tests so they could test the effectiveness of their instruc- tion in the classrooms.
