This may seem like an overly critical statement from those responsible for presenting this yearbook However, to show the many faces of Liberty would take several hundred pages. This was not possible: but though individual efforts, we have attempted to present the faculty, students, curriculum, activities, organizations, and sports in an interesting and organized manner. The staff of 196-L-05 proudly feels that the Liberty presented between these pages is the same one which we have grown to know. Mrs. Barnes's early education was obtained in Kentucky, the state in which she was born. She furthered her education at Arizona State where she received her Masters Degree in English and Social Studies. After fifteen years of teaching ex- perience at various schools, Mrs. Barnes joined the teaching staff of Liberty. During her years with us she has taught English, drama, public speaking, and journalism. Besides being active in many social and school functions, Mrs. Barnes finds time to write. She has written and published a number of plays and has recently published two books of poetry, DELTA PORTRAITS and THE OPPOSITE SHORE. To Mrs. Barnes, wife, mother, teacher, authoress, and friend, we would like to express our apprecia- tion and gratitude. . .I leave you the golden sun in spring To overrun each day your cup with fire. . That purpose is to improve constantly and update the education of the Liberty students. Every day from eight in the morning until often late in the evening, Mr. Wayne Boulding can be found doing such tasks as supervising the new QOHSETUQ- tion, interviewing job applicants and discussing new course offerings and improved curriculum with the staff. Purpose just as the curriculum was fitted to the students of 1904-1905, so is it being tailored and improved by Mr. Boulding for the students of today and tomorrow He is ever serious about his duties but still possesses a keen sense of humor and a contagious smile. These, along with a willingness to consider each problem with patience and fairness, are but a few characteristics of Liberty's Superintendent- Principal. f 1 Administration Runs Smoothly These gentlemen complete the Administrative team that causes Liberty to run smoothly, de- spite some temporary quarters for classrooms and problems presented by the building pro- gram. Because of this the library has been selected to open the faculty and curriculum section. A library that was almost destroyed by fire in 1963, has had a startling growth from the few hundred books salvaged to to a rising number of over 4, 400. Each of the new additions is carefully select- ed by Mr. Sharafanowich with the aid of the instructors. Since the freshman class officers assist- ed the sophomores in the selection of a class ring, the freshmen were allowed to vote on the proposal. Of considerable help to the class were advisors, Mr. Yancey and Mrs. Barnes. The freshmen had a membership majority in the F. F,A , and Latin Club. The selection of Homecoming Queen began with the October 9, 14, and 21 elections, the results of which were announced at the October 23 rally. I 9 The rally moved rapidly with skits, routines, and cheers by the Songleaders and Cheerleaders. Pre- ceeding the announcement of the queen, the classes were led in the Spirit Yell, with a Sophomore victory. A parade began the evening with the queen's float and those floats of the classes, and organizations. At half time the float winners were announced, with seniors taking first, juniors second, and sophomores third. During the last four minutes of the game Salesian made two winning touchdowns . The band presented a musical performance during half time, which was high-lighted by Captain Wayne Weder's presentation of an autographed football to the 1965 Homecoming Queen, Marsha Ackerman. The team presented the top five girls with football neck- laces and the fine runner-ups with bracelets. At the john Swett Basketball game, the Lions' rooters typically displayed the spirit that won them the S pirit Trophy . For Sportsmanship won by students. .vl- W1 'L 52:2 A member of the East Bay Athletic League for the past few years, Liberty has been in competition for the trophy awarded by this League to the school showing the best sportsmanship and spirit at league games. Visiting school's committees rated Liberty at home games as to the sportsmanlike attitudes of the Lion team and its rooters, as well as the overall spirit during each performance. Liberty has won the trophy three out of four times C1962 football, 1963-6-1 basketball. and 196-1 foot- ballj. We will receive it permanently if we keep showing such excellent sportsmanship. Valentine's Dance cleverly entitled, Kiss Me Cupid . Featured the day of the dance was the Mr. Irresis- table contest. Having been given name tags the day before, girls were instructed not to talk to the boys. If they spoke to a boy, the boy got their name tag. The boy with the most name tags was crowned Mr. Irresistableu at the dance. 46 Under a sea of crepe paper, the evening was danced away. Junior Prom To make the junior Prom, on March 6, remembered by all, the junior Class put in many hours arranging the decorations for their theme, Peppermint Para- dise . On Saturday night the students arrived at the boys' gym for a never-to-be-forgotten evening of dancing to the music of the Lynx , amidst a stunning array of decorations. Their theme could not have been more appropiate for truly the junior Prom was an evening in paradise. ...xx xi, X ' A ,mai X 4 7 Handsornely dressed couples enjoyed the music provided by the Lynx. Much ofthe four hours was spent in socializing. 'Q That old Christmas spirit really made this dance a success. At some time during our young lives we all outgrow the idea that there really is a Santa Claus. However, the old fellow seemed to be the spirit of a Liberty Christmas, for again this year he and Mrs. Claus arrived on December 18, at the Christmas Capers Dance put on by the Yearbook Society. In his sack he carried little rings and, to make the dance merrier, offered to wed any or all of the happy couples who were en- joying the music of the Sonics. This season's team was a truly fine, representative club that always played hard and tough to win for Liberty. The team was es- pecially effective as a defensive group that took advantage of their opponent's Weaknesses as soon as discovered. The league was better balanced this year than in the past in that every team except the champions was de- feated at least once by another league member, and all teams gave good accounts of themselves on the grid- iron. Liberty can be justly proud of its l964 Lions' respectable 6 - 3 record and second place in the E.B.A .L. Although losing three games, they were never outclassed in either ability or poise. Mr. William F. Peters 172 In looking over this year's Lion, one notices many changes. The one hundred seventy-two pages, plus four pages for autographs, represents the largest year book ever for Liberty. A first is the full colored end sheets. This year a curri- culum section was included along with classroom pictures and the faculty with their degrees and assignments. Last. an index was included to aid in the find- ing of important photographs. It is with pride that this year's Lion is presented. The staff feels that this is one of the finest annuals in our region. It represents hard work and many pro- blem-s, but also many happy memories. We hope that the 1965 Lion also holds fond memories for the reader and will be treasured for a lifetime. U ll!! 'Y 'W if ,'. 'IPI' I 1 1.
