Another group of future p I 11 citizens is graduating from Liberty. You are now quite well- . yy. I educated and thinking young men and women. You do not y -e14 , V just accept everything said to you, but do some critical -J ll T' analyzing before reaching a decision. This, among other ,A A,-A-F, . things, is what the school has tried to accomplish during ' -2 ' fi your four years here. Continue to be critical thinkers, re- i ' E 4 A, gardless of your future pursuits in adult life. Especially be 7 ' A ' '- vi V , critical in your political choices, so that only the best ,V 1, -e 1 ' f is people will represent you in government. Be critical in your ' thinking about your personal decisions, your life's work, 5 choosing a mate, and your moral and spiritual values. I do 1 not mean for you to be trouble finders, but rather to give xx 1 fl 1 serious thought to issues before making important decisions. X x f lf you and the thousands of others graduating this year will be thinking citizens, we need not have too much worry about f 4 X our country's future. The reception given to us by the Sophomores was enjoyable and very entertaining. Around Homecoming time, we must have been the most swelled -headed Frosh in the history of Liberty, having won second place on our float entered in the parade. Other projects such as the candy sale and the Freshman Dance, con- tributed money as well as memories to us. The hope we have added spirit to our school, and we will strive to con- tinue to do so. Splashing of soap, honking of Thunderbirds, water wars, scrubbing, polishing, being tired--this was the Ouest Club f at at the Ashland Shakespearean Festival. Best sight of the day: car wash, started in order to raise money or se s that last car washed. Dramatically, class skits, from MACBETH to HAMLET to LEAR to OTHELLO, were culminating efforts after these ' ' ' ' H ' d f th plays had been read. Other activities included T-V get togethers to watch MEDEA and MACBET , an or e ladies with the purple hats fThe Oakley Woman's Clubj, we presented scenes from Shakespeare s plays. But by far the biggest and the most back-breaking, mind-wearying porject was the Quest Club play. So many hours of rehearsals, dancing, acting, lighting--when would it stop! Opening night--those people--all those peo- ple--eyes--they're looking at us--at us. Now we look toward Ashland and a seeing for ourselves--with our eyes--that which we have studied with our mind and with our hearts. 37 1'T7!l Q. On October 22nd our toil paid off with a suc- cessful Sophomore Hopg for our theme we chose Moonglow. In the Spring we had a profitable car wash, which just about ended our activities for the year. The l960 varsity football team didn't win any titles, buth the team certainly played some fine games. They held the league champions from Livermore 19 to 6, their lowest score, and defeated Galt, John Swett and St. Elizabeth. The Lions also held the Antioch and Pacifica teams to 6 to 0 scores. The team was strong defensively in most games, but offensively they lacked speed to be a real threat. The feature of the season was Dick Linn's selection as All League and All Metropolitan End. VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1960-61 basketball season saw some fast and exciting action in the games, although the Liberty Hi Varsity won only three gatnes. ln many of the games there were some outstanding performances by different individuals and there were many good team efforts. Captain Mike Griffith led the team in reboutiding and free throw shooting and won honorable mention on the league team. Dick Linn led the team in field goals and also in total scoring having his biggest night by scoring QT points. He was a second team all league choice. less Tarango was the floor general and best ball handler. He was the most improved ball player on the team. Teaming with these three were Jr., David Dyer, and Sr., Charles Ligon. David was the third high scorer on the team and Charlie was the other back court man who teamed up with Tarango. Other letter winners are Larry Patty, who will be graduating, Charles Dwelley, the best defense big man and one of the best rebounders, and Pete Smith who is one of our better rebounders. Ronald Somerhalder, Fred Valverde, Tony Rios, Ron Dell lmmagine and George Negrete all will be returning to help form the nucleus for next yeat's team. 66 Liberty 26 . 24 . 28 . 38 . 39 . . 39 . 45 . 36 . 44 . . 30 . 26 . . 48 . 50 . 1 41 . 25 coAcH AND gg -U MANAGERS 56 - 39. The beginning of the season found our B team with one returning letterman. This means that our team was young and inexperienced. Two freshmen, Butch Smith and Mike Tarango played some very fine games in their first year of competition. The littliest man on the team, freshman Joe Biasi, dis- played enough spirit and hustle to earn a letter. Ray Valverde was chosen as the season captain by his teammates. Frank Caldera, Joe Tarango, Mike Dacus, Reggie Richart, Doug Hammond and Richart Patos showed great improvement as the season progressed. Many of these boys will move up to our varsity, and the experience they gained with the B team will enable them to represent our school on the basketball court with the competitive spirit that Liberty High School is noted for. The loss of two stellar swimmers, Bill Painter and Rich Clemons, thru graduation, and the untimely and grievious loss of two of our beloved teammates who would have competed again this season leaves a void that will be very difficult to fill. Lettermen returning again this season who should lend power for a good nucleus include: Rodney Yoder, Tom Wisecarver, Tom Fitzpatrick, Mike R. Griffith, David Johnson and Tim Jose. The outstanding sprinter in this group is Capt. Mike Griffith who should again reign supreme in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events as well as anchoring the freestyle relay team. Co-Captain of the team is Tom Wisecarver, a very fast improving breaststroker who has a very competitive spirit. There are several new swimmers out for the team this season who should develop into fine swimmers. Some of these boys are as follows: Mick Barnes, John Arnold, Jim Wisecarver, Fred Turner, Ken Bloodworth, and Scotty Cunningham. From last season's championship B Team we have David Wristen, Reg Richart, Mel Bombardier, Gary and Larry Lindsay, Emil Geddes, and David Pedersen all of whom should really do a fine job on the varsity. These boys all have great desire and good attitude, so they should really improve and push the record book even further down in time to come. BASEBALL At the time of this writing, the Liberty Varsity Baseball team was preparing for league play. The team appears to have a good pitching staff in Dennis Piloti, David Whitely, and Bob Fred- ricks. Coach Bronzan feels that if the Lions come up with some hitting and fielding to match its pitching, the team could pull some surprises in league play. Seniors who played their last baseball for Liberty were James Riciole, David Whitely, Larry Patty, Frank Berumen, Les Pink- ston and Vidal Franco. The J.V. Baseball team got off to a rather slow start early this season. However, at the time of this writing the entire team was beginning to show real improvement. Several Standouts should boost the strength of next year's varsity. First on the program was our coke and hot dog sale, which took place during the night of the John Swett game. Hot dogs were sold as fast as the students could slap the dogs into the buns with a splash of mustard. A great honor was bestowed on the Junior class when Mr. Callaghan announced at half time on Homecoming night our class had won first place for the best decorated and noisiest float of the parade. This made every Junior feel as if he were on cloud nine. The most glamourous event of our Junior year was our Junior Prom. The excitement started that morning and continued throughout the svjce P ajjy fesid Hum ent 17191 E dance. Such a night developing into a wonderful memory for us B Gore, will remain within the minds of every Junior who helped to make the etty BHG' evening successful. alley Loads of fun, chips, cokes, and hot dogs. This was our Junior class picnic. What a softball game, boys versus girls. 20 runs fall homers, of coursej and everyone tired out.
