A TRIBUTE TO MR. CALLAGHAN The Annual staff is honored to dedicate this sec- tion ofthe Annual to Superintendent B. J. Callag- han, who is retiring after thirty-six years of dedicated service to Liberty Union High School. Liberty has been fortunate that Mr. Callaghan chose to serve here, for he has been a devoted leader who grasped every opportunity to establish a sound educational system in this school. He is a recognized leader in education throughout the state, having occupied enviable positions on state committees Qtoo many to include herej, one of which has been the State Evaluation of Schools Committee for the accreditation of high schools. He has served on numerous state, county, and local committees. One might wonder why he chose to remain in Brentwood in preference to teaching in larger schools. This was worth investigating, so this snooping reporter looked into The Secret Life of Mr. Callaghan Qfrom the informer. J Mr. Bernard Joseph Callaghan, alias, Barney, B. J., Major, and Pat was born in Redlands, California, graduated from Redlands High School, and from there went to the University of California at Berkeley, where he majored in chemistry, re- ceiving his teaching credential after five years of study. There, too, he met Miss Katherine Regan who he married after three years of teaching at Liberty. It was during those early Cal Days that he acquired two of his nicknames: Barney, used almost exculsively by his wife, and B. J. tagged by his classmates. When Mr. Callaghan accepted the position as teacher at Liberty, there were no telephones, no heat, no other conveniences now available. He handled all student accounts, attendance records, and asundry reports. As a new teacher, he was freshman advisor, play coach, and heir to the odd jobs left over after the old teachers had made their choices. He did these odd jobs so well that his principal called him Major. The Major became Vice-Principal, Principal, and Superin- tendent. Obviously these indicate a rise in position but the Major has consistently objected to the terminology rise in position, rather, he asserts that there is no higher position than that of the teacher. , , When asked why he had chosen to stay in Brent- wood, the answer was that when he came here, he found the people friendly, that he liked the people and his position, and saw no reason to go else- where. He had the feeling that he was growing with the school and community, and that he has been happy here. In this relationship he became known as Pat, so named by his friend, Dr. Rob- bins. We now speak directly to Mr. Callaghan: Our dear Mr. Callaghan, the members of the Annual Staff, speaking for the entire Student Body of Liberty, say 'thank you for your guidance, your dedicated service to the school, and your con- fidence in us. We know that the task has not been easy, but we know, too, that whatever your task, you possess the dignity, the stature, the spirit, and personal conviction to rise to the occasion.

Roy and Gayle Krumland The Annual Staff of 1960 dedicates this annual to you, Mr. and Mrs. Krumland, as an expression from the whole Student Body of sincere appreciation for you and the many services both of you have per- formed for the whole school. We realize that this is a very small token in com- parison to the outstanding work you have done both inside and outside the classroom, but the Staff takes pleasure in using this means of saying Thank you many times again. Sincerely, fgltltddz Stag 3
