I I ?l Chapter 150C of the California Scholarship Federation has enjoyed a very successful year under the guidance of our advisor, Miss Van Tassel, and our President, Stanley Andrade. Two Honor Day trips, taken on a school day, are enjoyed by the chapter every semester. The annual C.S,F. Carnival which draws a tremendous crowd for a gala time is held every Spring. Representatives are sent to a C.S.F. Convention every year, and they bring back many new ideas for the or- ganization. The C.S.F. has pleasant times, and never forgets its motto, Scholarship for Service. If it can, it will help any person or organization during the school year. I The Majorettes, under the instruction of Mrs. Laurine Johnson and Mr. Allen Jones, band director, have performed remarkably well this season. They accompanied the band to the Cal Band Day in Berkley and performed at our football games, both at home and away. The Majorettes did many new colorful and different routines this season which everyone enjoyed a great deal. 41 The 1958 varsity football team won but one game, however, the team gained the admiration of everyone for its hustle and determination as they were completely out-manned in every game. Never once did they quit trying until the final gun sounded. The squad consisted of no returning lettermen and only averaged 143 pounds per man, with but one player over 5'll in height. This undoubtedly was one of the smallest teams ever fielded by a senior high school. The Lions' best practice game was against Antioch when they held the strong Panthers to a 13 to 0 score. ln league action the high point was when the Lions defeated Amador 20 to 7. At the conclusion of the season, John Mundell and Jack de Fremery were elected Co-Captains for the year. John was selected second team All-League with Jack picked for third team. Gary Dyer and Efrain Martinez landed on the honorable mentions team. Players making their letters were as follows: Seniors, Bill Bevill, Bob Bevill, Mike Wisecarver, Gary Dyer, John Mundell, Allen Davis, Larry Moore, Teddy McDonald, Ken Holloway, Ken Lopez, and Jack de Fremery: Juniors, Ray Barrios, Mel Hollen, Mel Minor, Dennis Sanchez, Robert Hurst, Efrain Martinez Gary Walker, Ronald Sylvester, Michael McAtee, Sophomores, Gary Morales, Frank Berumen, Sergio Fernandez, and Dwayne Davis. They were willing to try against teams that were much older and more experienced than them- selves. Clayton Valley was a team that should have been in a new league with many boys that had played on a varsity team but our Junior varsity still went out and gave a good accounting of itself. As the season progressed, our boys kept improving, until they were able to tie Livermore, one of our arch rivals. They then came on to beat Amador here on the home field, and with a pass or two caught at a crucial time they could have beaten John Swett. Against A lbany they played one of their better games, and showed a spirit that would never let them give up. When the season ended there were still 46 players with the team. They showed great improvement and many will go on to take their place on the varsity in the years to come. Some of those who showed promise and played much of the season were Sophomores: Tom Wiley, Dick Linn, Charles Ligon, Ron Esau, Ray Gonzalves, Donald Machado, Jerry Law, Wayne Wright and Ray Caballerro. Some Freshmen that showed promise for the future were David Dyer, Dennis Pilati, Terry Kellog, Robert Perez, Phil Perez, Leo Trezpkowski and Joe Barnhill. fa, ' Liberty . . . 6--15 . . Barbara Adams, We, the Sophomore Class of 6l started out our year with a bang by giving a coke sale. This was our first money making project and it proved to be very profitable. Next came the Freshman Reception, which was really loads of fun for all attending. We looked forward all year to our Sopho- more Hop, and it was a huge success. We had a rewarding year with the help of our wonderful advisors. They have played one-half of their games without one or more of the first five players. Even with this bad luck, the superior rebounding ofjohn Mundell, the all around playing of Dan Kataoka and David Fisher plus good scoring from Gary Dyer and Ron Wolfhave provided good basket- ball games for the Liberty rooters this year. The fine improvement of Charles Cekola and Dick Linn have added to the team a great deal this year. These plus first year men Mel Hollen and Phil Reddick have given the team fine reserves. Coming back are Linn, Hollen and Reddick plus two more men with possibilities, Jim Watson and Bruce Dwelley. These will have to fill the big gap that is left. Much will be expected of next year's Soph. class. Bob Pierce has the bad luck of being too old to play next year. He would add much to the team if he could. Without injuries to key players, we feel that we could have won our last eight league games. In only three games has the team been beaten by much. We feel that we have been in each of the other games, many were lost by one, two, or three points. We feel that the season has been successful in many ways although maybe not in wins. They were bolstered by nine Freshmen and six Sophomores and one Junior. The early part of the season found the team progressing quite rapidly and they managed to beat Gustine and Clayton Valley. The league season has proved to be very tough. The team suffered the loss of Jess Phelan a returning letterman and illness and injuries to Chuck Dwelley, Pete Smith, and Jess Tarango cut down the team strength even more. All of the boys have shown im- provement and a great willingness to give their best efforts even when all seemed lost. This is the kind of spirit that Liberty High teams are noted for. The future should hold better prospects for many of these boys, for they have gained valuable experience in this season of playing basketball. .12 L X 9 Manager Gallegos 5 1 I I Q , FIRST ROW: R. Through the past eight years, swimming has rapidly grown into a major sport with forty-five boys trying out for the team this season. Every school record is of no later vintage than 1956 and this season already, the boys have broken three of otu school marks which were set in past years by other fine athletesg they are continuing in fine tradition and are a credit to themselves and their school's proud athletic history. The Lions defeated San Ramon 8 to 2 and Pacif- icia 9 to 8 while losing to Antioch and Ripon. The prospects for this season are better than last year since Liberty lost but two players by graduation. Coach Lou Bronzan feels that if the Lions pitching staff develops enough and the hitting improves Liberty will give the favored John Swett, Liver- more and Alhambra teams a battle for the league crown. Seniors leading the varsity are sec- ond basemang Mike Wisecarverg last year's team captain, left fielder, Gary Dyer, last year's leading hitter, Alehu Ribeiro, Jack deFermery, An- tonio Mercado and Stan Andrade.
