Without your tireless and efficient overseeing of our financial affairs we could have few, if any of our many functions. We thank you for your time and effort at our football and basketball games and appreciate the extra time you give in order that the records ar kept straight from year to year. All of this, ofcourse, in addition to your wonderfull job of teaching. We hope this expresses in some small way our thanks. Throughout the year we have worked and given every effort to publish a greater than ever annual. At this time we, the Annual Staff, would like to thank our advisor, Mr. McKee, who gave us his time and advice, taking us over many rough spots. Sincerely Yours, The Annual Staff of 1958 Advisor: Mr. McKee Superintendent's Message The current school year has witnessed a great awakening of interest by the American people in our public schools, especially our high schools. This increased attention has produced some unfair criticism but on the whole it is a fine thing for schools. Ours are community schools and they are nurtured by constant community concern. It is most encouraging that currently the attention of the public is largely centered on improving the level of student achievement. This has always been the major ob- jective of our school and any help the community can give us is more than welcomed. f 6 PrineipaI's Message To you students who have made this past year at Liberty Union High School a year of valuable progress toward your ultimate goal, we extend our congratulations. We have confidence that your book of the future contains many interesting chapters of happiness and success, just as this beautiful Annual contains the record of the many chapters of your happinesses and successes during the past four years. We of the faculty are proud of your school accomplishments and appreciate your contributions toward the building of this school into the kind of superior secondary school for which we are all striving. gaggz afffrafafa w L l ,vj kj Gladys Scobey Marian Hobson Ruth Bell Schogl Secretary Office Accountant School Nurse Office Staff Trustees LEFT to RIGI-lT: Joseph Faria, Ralph Emerson, Harry Hobbs, Stanley Nunn, Fabin Richart Jr., B. Dewayne Davis President This year has been a very successful one for us. Our first duty was to elect our class officers, who have proven themselves to be very capable. We were welcomed by the Sophorrvures who gave us a great reception. Our first money making event was our coke sale. In January, came our Calypso Dance, which proved to be enjoyable and fun for everyone. With the help of our wonderful advisors, Mrs. Griffith and Mr. Rock, there has not been any real problems. We feel our four years of high school have been as entertaining as they have been enlightening. The Seniors started their year with a coke sale which proved very successful. Next in line was a half record and half band dance which everyone enjoyed. Our really big date, however came in May, the Senior Ball. Representatives sent to the Central Section convention held in Modesto each brought many useful and inspiring ideas for the group. The Chapter also helped to patrol the rooting section for games, ushered at graduation and performed other services for the school. They accompanied the band to the Cal Band Day in Berkley and performed at our football games, both home and away. Mr. Jones, fielding new and different band routines used the majorettes for added interest and color. They used double baton twirling routines and dance steps to make the field stunts more difficult for them and interesting to us. For several games all six majorettes were used while at the others three regulars and one new girl were used, giving the new majorettes more marching experience with the band, and thereby in- suring us another wonderful group next year. 62 I f .'-re . 5' fit'f ' M t xfbg jx arg +31 fu ul TOP ROW, L. to R.: G. Lead by our two presidents, Yvonne Bovert and Charlotte Baroni, and our two advisors Miss Graber and Mrs. Jimenez the year has been very successful, and has had few problems. Our first big event was our Swim Show, which was held in April. This proved to be lots of fun for everyone, and also the GAA's biggest money making venture. In May came the GAA Turnabout Dance, which also provided everyone with a wonderful time. And to climax the year, in late May, we had our Annual Awards Dinner. Perhaps the most encourag- ing fact is the overall improvement shown by each and every player. This was especially pleasing due to the fact that only three of the boys on the team have had any playing experience prior to the season. Offensively this year the Cubs were stronger than in some previous years. The blocking in the line and the faking and running of the backs were effective this year. The Cubs ground outlarge amounts of yardage in each game with D. Sanchez, J. Tarango, C. Campbell, and quarterback M. Minor carrying the ball. Seldom does any J.V. team boast much of a passing game, but the combination of M. Minor passing and D. Davis and R. Linn catching was most effective weapon in the attack this season. During the first of the season, tackling was spotty, as were other phases. By midseason the line charge was ter- rific, and the tackling quite fierce at times. Some of the boys contributing to the fine defensive play at the season's end were: Webb, Fernandez, Davis, Trammell, H. Williams, F. Williams, D. Sanchez, M. Miner, and F. Berumen. Overall, this season speaks of much hard work, a natural desire to play the game well. improvement in most parts, team effort, good sportsmanship, and It was indeed a pleasure to have worked with this fine group of boys who I'm sure will step up in the next year or so to carry on the fine reputation in football that is ours here at Liberty High. Although a little thin in the ranks there are quite a few boys who have shown fine possibilities for the fu- ture. With a rather short.pre-competi- tion season hampered by weather so far it is questionable now as to how the per- formance may progress within the league. Our own performance to date have been in keeping with most early season ef- forts, and week to week there has been some improvement in most areas. Al- bany and San Ramon appear to be the teams in strong contention for the league title, but with much effort and improve- ment in most departments and solid team desire Liberty could make a five showing and perhaps pull an upset. Some of the boys who have made good showings this year to date are: D. Bor- jon 100-220, I. Tarango 180-L.l-I., J. Mundell 880, S. Gill-mile, D. Trammell- mile, A1 Davis 440, R. McCall, L. Stuart, R. B Track A decided building program is in progress in the B track team. With but a small sign up and most of the experienced boys moving up to the A team the ranks were very thin. Of the B team in gen- eral, all boys have shown improvement and there is a willingness to work hard among most of the boys which will pay off in this and in future seasons. Commendable performances to date have been turned in by J. Gallegos, C. DeMartini, K. Green, J. Phelan, A. Parker, and J. The veterans led by Captain Don Lopes are as follows: Bob Cossins backstroke, Kerry Curtis 200 freestyle, John Morrison backstroke, Larry Moore back and individual Medley, Mel I-Iollen diver, Bill Painter freestyle sprinter. Bob Cossins is almost a sure cinch to break the school re- cord in the 100 yard backstroke barring unforseen incidents and should win the division meet in which he placed high last year. Kerry Curtis is pressing hard to break the school mark in the 200 yard freestyle and with one ye ar of eligibility left, stands a fine chance of lowering the standard. Bill Painter, the soph sprint ace, is rapidly rounding into form as a top flight sprinter who with added polish should have a great season. Larry Moore and John Morrison are two utility men who are working very hard and improving rapidly giving the team added depth in the backstroke and relay events. Newcomers who are really impressive in early meets and workouts are Orville Kuhn, Jim Yoder, Carl Jacobsen, Richard Clemons, and freshman Gilbert Vasquez. Kuhn has already cracked the school mark in the 100 yard butterfly and 100 yard breaststxoke, and James Yoder has taken over as the top 400 yard man and looks to do well in the division meet in this event. The squad should do well in the dual meet season if all the boys continue to improve as they have indicated they are capable of doing. .. ,Q F Manager Jack Hayes 1 so--s nvf l wrt -fl LEFT to RIGHT: B. Our present crop of players are almost all from the Freshman class. Although some have looked good in practice, we can't foretell how their season will turn out. We may have to sprout water wings and play with a beach ball in order to have a baseball season this year. If we do this we expect C. Ligon, F. Beruman, L. Gusiti, and V.
