Their never-ending patience and understanding, their interest and co- operation in our everyday school activities is indeed something we can be proud of. Under the leadership of George Gamble, each custodian has a particular area to maintain. Buck Belscher has the main building, Bob Nunes, and lawns and boy 's gym, Jim Roberts, the wings, music and art building, as well as the girl's gym, and John A ddington and Cecil Epling, our very necessary bus drivers. We hope this expresses our gratitude to these men who seldom receive thanks for their endless efforts. 3 LEFT to RIGHT: Cecil Epling, George Gam- ble, Buck Belscher, John Addington, B Nunes. NOT PICTURED: Jim Roberts. ,y t i ,L f. . ob ff' ..-41, vm X . A11 those who have worked on the production of this year's Liberty Lion have indeed a right to a feeling of pride in thebea utifulannual their efforts have produced. To have had a part in such a worthy project is to experience a feeling of deep satisfaction that can be ob tained in no other way. It is Uue of course that not all of us can be members of the an- nual staff or be student body officers or play on the school teams but to everyone is the chance given, both in school and in later life, of doing the best he can to further the worthy projects of his group. 4 :QM-WV' PRINCIPALp'S M SSAGE At the close of this fine school year may I take this opportunity to congratulate you students of Liberty Union High School on the educa- tional, social and athletic achievements you have accomplished during this past school year which are so beautifully reflected in this, your annual yearbook. We hope the inspiration which you have received from your school and your teachers will richly contribute to the total development that will insure your future success and happiness 'J K Xb- xl T A si , . . A A fter four years of working together and sharing many happy ex- periences, the Class of '57 is ready to leave Liberty and begin their CHIGCIIS. The Seniors started their year with a coke sale which proved very successful. Then came the annual Senior Talent Show which pro- vided a wonderful hour of entertainment for the Student Body. In May came the Senior Ball, the highlight of the year. Thus, we the Class of 1957, leave Liberty with many happy mem ories to follow our separate paths in life. 'Ui Ja X A QQ'-'ER 79 This page is dedicated to Herman Urenda for his many achievements. One of Libertys greatest all-around athletes Herman lettered sixteen times in football, basketball, track and baseball and if he had more time he probably would have lettered in swimming as well. As a student he was an Honor student, made the CSF, was a leader and an outstanding citizen. Customarily it isn't wise to single out one athlete because usually he is the sum total of the actions of many, however Herman's teammates would be the first to single him out for his feats. For all-around brillance on the gridiron he was selected All-American, All-League, All-North- em California back, All-Central-California back and was selected to play in the annual Shrine North-South game in Los Angeles. Other a- chievements in football included -- leading scorer Northern California with a total of 156 points, 9.9 yards per carry rushing, 43. yard a- verage punting, and making twelve conver- sions in one game. Besides football Herman excelled in basketball where he averaged 17 points per game and scored a record of 40 points in one game. In track he high jumped 6'2 and in baseball was a steller first baseman. To top his many achievements he won the decathlon championship three years in a row. Hats off to a great athlete, may his future be as great as his past and may his marks challenge and encourage others to even greater heights. -,.,,Q, .A -Z i X WI? .- 1 .5 J 'i -Q-...-.- .. .,... ,, . .ifg if ,. -X fi, 51 fires. The 1956 Cub team was a team with spirit and desire. with only three boys on the team with any real playing experience the team progressed remarkably well. There were many bright spots and golden moments this season. Lack of experience and frequently lack of size hampered the Cub's efforts from time to time but, many times these factors were overcome by individual and team desire. In Livermore, the Cubs faced the finest J.V. team in the history of that school--the Cubs played excel lent football, nearly tying the Cowboys in losing 14-6. Albany had size, speed, and experience over the Cubs. The Cubs were a determined and fired up group as they outplayed the Cougar J.V's, in winning 7-G. Against Amador the Liberty J.V.'s played a nearly perfect game on defense and an aggressive game on of fense to win 14-0. Some of the Cubs who are expected to do real well in the future are: B. K , . .- The Varsity basketball team started the season with only one experienced player although some of the other players looked like good prospects. They took all of the practice season and some of the league season before they started to jell. They continued to improve all through the season and ended up tied for second place in league Standing. Seniors There were six seniors on this years team. Team captain and high scorer for two years is Herm Urenda. Herman exceled in all aspects of the game. The floor leader this year was Jack England who without previous varsity experience sort of grew into his job and developed the poise and leadership which is necessary for his job. Another senior who developed as a good defense man and second highest scorer was Caroll Elkins. He played good ball all season. Three other seniors who played good ball are Jim Ligon and Eddie Domingo, the sixth and seventh men, who played a lot of good ball especially in the rebounding department and Tom Viramontez. Torn didn't play much but was one of the best liked, added much with his team spirit and sly humor. Prospects for next year Eight of this years team will be returning next year. Among these are Bob Addington, John Mundell, Myrvin Somerhalder and Owen Fullmer. All of these were among the first five at various times and contributed much to this years team. Others who played were Bob Butler and Jim Wiley, who we expect much from next year. lsidro Tarango and Charles Cekola could develope and round out a team which has a bright future for next year.. tl ,ff 1,1 1' il, F .gli-, ' kr' ' if ,. f':i'f1 4 '51 .x fi ' fklliiski' Az. They worked hard and long, and at times showed signs of greatness. Be- cause this team worked so well as a unit it is difficult to single out any one player as being particulary outstanding, however I was very pleased with the season play of Katoa- ka and Wolf. Beating San Ramon in the last game of the season was perhaps the best example of this teams ability. San Ramon was chosen co-champion of our league and was defeated by Liberty in both games played. 105 Y-L -N x P hi ,,,gg' 9-.?5 .fQ v ,f X Q, , by-Ii 1' 'Nw 34456 1 - x uv' 1 -g w- 'Lf ,vlxq . With the graduation of such fine trackmen as miler Dan Mc- Lain, halfmiler Tom Shelton, Shot Putter Lonnie Keys, and many others, this year's team will be formed from a nucleus of about a dozen ICIUIDCSS. There are many bright prospects in those returning, to men- tion a few: J. Allen, J. Alanis, R. Bloodworth, T. Quesada, A. Davis, D. Borjon, I. Tranago, L. Stuart, N. Blaine, J. Duarte, F. To this we have many boys-yet to find themselves, In the past, Liberty track teams have made good showings and every boy has enjoyed improvement in his performances-this has been accomplished through hard work and determined effort. With the team working hard now and exhibiting fine team spirit, there is every reason to believe that this year we will have another fine track team at Liberty. 107 1 l 1 I , , x -ij! 11 Q 3 . There is a lot of enthusiasm, with many promising freshmen determined to make places for themselves in track at Liberty. Not only are a great number of these boys gifted with ability, but they are a hard working group, eager to learn and to improve in their events. Though the total number of these boys is relatively small this year, their ability, interest, and enthusiasm indi- cate that we may expect more fine track teams in the future. v H -2 - . Last season, our boys improved a great deal, but due to graduation and an untimely move by the fam- ily, we lost the two Kawada brothers Alan and Kay who will be sorely missed, We have many fine returning lettermen who should help develop a strong and balanced team, led by Jack England, backstroker par-excellent, we have such worthy standouts as Bob Cossins in the backstroke and individual med- lcyg Jim Partridge, Jerry Pomeroy, and Don Lopes in the sprintsg Frank Mallett, a workhorse in past seasons, is back again in the breaststroke event, Most of these boys plus the Kawada brothers broke nearly all of Liberty's existing records as well as placing in the League Meet and going on to the Sectional meet at Santa Clara. With normal growth and progression, I look for an even more record breaking season this year. Several new Prospects promise to improve our team depth, Kerry Curtis, a standout on the B team last year, should help us in the hundred and two hundred. Larry Moore is a fine prospect in the backstrokc and David Fisher shows signs of greatness in the breaststroke, Our chief weakness appears to be in the sprinting depth which is necessary in order to maintain power in the re- lays, and I am sure that if our swimmers continue to improve this weakness can be repaired and thereby make us a tough team to beat. 110 N. - uf g '11 F. I take heart in the fact that there is a good turnout and that some of the boys show signs of future greatness Our B Team should be considerably stronger than last year's team, and I'm hoping that they may improve in their League standing. As long as the B team continues to produce 2 or 3 good swimmers each season who are capable of moving up to the Varsity the next season, we feel that the team has served its purpose. lil 'L I .I llllllill . .
