In a large measure the future of our country depends on how well this task is met. A school annual, such as this splendid Liberty Lion, certainly gives proof that our students are learning the art of effective group work. The book itself is the result of the combined efforts of the editor, the annual staff and the advisor. Its pages present, in picture and print, a year's history of the active student life of our school. It is working in this way for the success of the group that our youth learn the duties of American citizens. ANNUAL STAFF It has taken much work to produce this year's annual. There were the prob- lems of meeting deadlines, obtaining photographs, and raising money to give you a bigger yearbook than ever before. Through hard work and much cooperation the staff presents this '55 LION to you, the Student Body. We sincerely hope that it will recall many fond memories of the past school year. I would like to express my grateful thanks to anyone who helped in any way to make this '55 annual a success. A special acknowledgement goes to the Rally Club for sponsoring the After Game Dance for the benefit of the annual, and the Block L for a percentage of the Sportscade. To my staff, may I thank you again for all the help you have given me, on the annual itself, and the activities we have sponsored. Thanks also, to my editors for all their work and cooperation. They gave up many evenings and Saturdays to help meet deadlines. To Mr. Giambruni, our advisor, I would like to express the appreciation of the whole staff, as well as myself, for all the help and advice he has given us. Without his efforts this book could not have been produced. SANDRA WALKER, Yearbook Editor I. Y! sgi is P ik? f Q' Qwr. x ,gd , A' . I ' I 3- QX f f flwl'-7' f Q 'sf ' Qj X b' 5 ww ijggfj 'X 1 P . Some of the specific purposes are: To develop competent, aggressive, rural, and agricultural leader- ship. To create and nurture a love of country life. To strengthen the confidence of farm boys and young men in themselves, and their work. Our chapter tries to accomplish these purposes by encouraging each member to have a good home project and participate in chapter activities. To help encourage this we have our annual Best Freshman Project Award, and we also compete in the American Trust Company's Award system competition. To strengthen the confidence of farm boys in themselves we encourage their participation in the county fairs, and the State Fair. For summer activities besides the fairs we have a summer F.F.A. camp in the Sierra. Each summer our advisor takes a small group to this camp. MR. HAVENS, Advisor Si 5 ff 4. And in the hall a pennant flies which proclaims: Champions-1954-Diablo Valley Athletic League-East Bay Division-Liberty High. Again, for the fourth year in a row, another championship team has been achieved at L.U.H.5. During these four years, there have been many men in the Cardinal and Gold uniforms, some outstanding, some stars, some heros, but above all-guys who wanted to play the game . . . and play they have. The players themselves have not been really outstanding in ability, but, thanks to the hard work of four men, they have been mixed thoroughly in a mad scramble, and have come out better than stars-they have been a team. These four men, coaches, gentlemen, teachers and friends, have done much for football at Liberty. Much more than we could rightfully expect . . . they have been makers of cham- pions, and, more important, makers of men . . . for this reason, we of the staff take this opportunity to say thanks to four great coaches-Lou Bronzan, Jack Ferrill, Bruce Nelson, and Don Inman . . . gf? Bruckner, J A TEAM The Liberty Lions downed the San Ramon Wolves to win their first game in the newly formed league, the East Bay Division of the Diablo Valley Athletic League. This was anyone's game in the first, second and third quarters with scores being, T4-13, 20-20, 27-26, in their respective quarters. Urenda then made two TD sprints, one from the two yard line and the other from the eight, leading the Lions to victory. Liberty defeated Albany to win their second league game. Scoring was started by Louie Fernandez who made a 55 yard dash for a TD. After Albany lost the ball on downs, Silveira made a TD in the second and third quarter, also making a TD in the third quarter was Urenda on a 71 yard run. Outstanding players on defense were Willis, Pringle, Bruckner, and Davis. The Liberty Lions defeated the John Swett Indians and so advanced to top contention for the division championship. Silveira drew first blood on a one yard plunge in the first quarter. ln the second quarter Silveira ran for his second TD. An intercepted pass by Willis was carried over for a TD by Urenda. ln the third quarter Fernandez crashed over from the 5 for a TD. Then in the final period John Swett scored with a 20 yard pass. The Lions traveled to to Martinez and suffered their first defeat in the new league making it a three way tie between Alhambra, San Ramon, and Liberty. The only Durate, S. Fortner, A. Silveria, R. Stone. 'scoring in the game was made by Alhambra on a plunge from the eight yard line in the first quarter. The rest of the first half was a tight defensive game with Liberty making several treats. The Lions were a strong offensive group in the second. half and reached their height in the fourth quarter, but it was too late for them to score. Liberty handed their traditional rivals, the Livermore Cowboys, a defeat on the Lions' field. The first three quarters of the game was a tight defensive game with Liberty and Livermore both threatening on several occasions. The Liberty backs along with some fine offensive blocking proved to be too much for the cowboys as Silveira's two yard smash in the fourth quarter proved to be fatal to the Livermore team. Both teams crossed the goal line on other occasions only to be called back by penalties. This rain drenched game played at Fairfield on Armistice Day was featured by the outstanding running of Captain Elect, Al Silveria and Stan Fortner. Stan contributed over TOO yards by rushing. Touchdowns were scored by Al Silveria twice, Herman Urenda and Lou Fernandez. Fernandez's run was a beautiful 25 yard sideline run featured by excellent blocking of Charles Willis, Victor Bruckner and Al Celoni. Liberty gained I6 first downs and 258 net yards rushing while holding Armiio to a short 5 first downs and 64 yards rushing. This game ended Liberty's season with a 7 won, 2 loss season and a co- championship in the newly formed East Bay Diablo Valley League. The following Seniors concluded their High School football in this game- Captlain Al Silveria, Stan Fortner, Frank Davis, Don Rennels, Ray Coelho, and Leon Bevi . We had a very pleasing season, for this team had more team spirit, desire, hard work, and loyalty than any basketball team I have coached at Liberty. The boys liked each other and always played hard to win. They never quit and always gave the crowd a pleasing game until the final buzzer sounded. Most of the games we lost were games that could have gone either way quite easily. It was sincerely a pleasure for me to coach such a receptive and loyal group ot boys. From the standpoint of wins and losses the season has been a rugged one. The competition this year has been very tough. The Liberty Cubs not being a tall team had to contend with much taller teams all the way through the schedule. This year's B team was a courageous group of boys. Despite larger teams, and subsequent losses they never let down. The boys because of their desire, team play, and sportsmanship won the ac- claim of not only their own coaches, but those of rival coaches and players as well. One B player, who was later moved up to the varsity, made all-League honors-that was Tom Shel- ton. L2-ii.-is f ' 'ff' f '0 ARNOLD HAMPTON, President CLASS OF '55 Under the guidance of the capable Senior officers, the class of '55 began a very active year by helping the freshman class organize its first sale. However, the annual Homecoming provided us with a grand opportunity to carry off a successful coke sale of our own. ln the parade our animated Cheaper By The Dozen float, drew many an appreciative chuckle. Our Senior Class initiated a series of noon dances in the second semester, and we further increased our funds by means of coke sales during football and basketball seasons, plus a successful after-game dance in January. Springtime saw the annual Senior Talent show where the Student Body ap- plauded a number of skilled performances. Later the Class of '56 played host for a delightful Junior-Senior picnic. Naturally, the colorful Senior Ball provided the highpoint of our year. A result of careful planning and hard work, this event concluded our social activities. Then came the climax . . . commencement with its mixture of sadness and joy when ours was the first class to graduate in our own caps and gowns, thus ending the career at Liberty of the Class of 1955. 1 if . - i l GLORIA SANI Senior Rep. The 1954 baseball team placed second in the new league with a record of six wins and two losses. The highly successful season was highlighted by the following: five consecutive one-run gamesg Liberty's first night game at Lodig defeat of Livermore and San Ramon twice, Roger Stone getting six straight hits, David Mack, a converted pitcher shutting out Alhambra with no runs and three hits, good defensive play by Don Rennels, John Wisecarver, Mike O'Brien and Tony Sanchezg Al CeIoni's relief pitching in edging l to O. At the conclusion of the year David Mack was selected for the Block L out- standing player trophy and Don Rennels was elected honorary captain. Graduating seniors are Don Rennels, Joe Geyser and David Mack. :- 'L i 5- QL. :LJ ix! Q- A SWIMMING TEAM 71' is ufft. -.-B. Back row: Coach Jack Ferrill, B. Palladino, C. Jacobsen, D. Teague, R. SUMMARY l955 SWIMMING SEASON The team was plagued with our usual early season problem again this season -cold water. They went into the first meet with less than one week of practice. Considering the fact that the boys were way behind most other teams in condi- tioning, I feel that they gave a very good account of themselves. We had some unusually good prospects out for the team this season who should turn out to be outstanding swimmers by the time they graduate. Leroy Hartwig, and Jack England provided the one-two punch this season with each of them racking up new school records in their respective events. We finished in third place in the B Division and fourth place in the A Division of the E.B.C. Division Meet at San Ramon. This was about where we expected to finish in the A events but the B team provided us with a pleasing surprise in finishing third. Next season, we are supposed to have a heated pool, and I look for great strides to be made by our swimmers in improvement of form, technique, and times. San Ramon and Alhambra had great Track Teams well stocked with Top-notch senior talent. Our representa- tion aT The league meet was very creditable. We broke fifteen school records This season, which speaks very well for The calibre of athletes we had on This Team. Our relay Teams gave excellent representation, aT all of The large meets This year spreading The name of Liberty over The length and width of The Central Valley and The North Coast. Next season, we expect a few boys To qualify for The state meet, also, we expect our medley relay Team To be one of The best in The state. The really outstanding work This year was done by Herman Urenda, Stan Fortner, Rodger Ball, Dan McClain, Tom Shelton, Jerry Allen and George Henry. The spirit of The squad was very high This season with the desire to improve very much in evidence among the team members. A fine group of freshmen Turned in excellent performances and should do very well in The next Three years. With help in The sprints and The weight events, Liberty could again assume a very high Track standing. .5- 4 1 1 r' ,-Q. .V ,f-. .va 1 KK.
