This year the students of L.U.H.S, are dedicating the LIBERTY LION to a person whom we feel, in the short time he has been at Liberty, has done a great deal for the Student Body. He has instigated the Rally Committee to grow and prosper and to become one of the most popular organizations at Liberty. To him goes the credit of starting the Annual Homecoming Parade and Queen's Contest, and other activities spon- sored bythe Rally Club. He teaches mathematics, algebra and Freshman social studies. We wish to show our gratitude and appreciation to him by dedicating this year's annual to Mr. Arthur Cate. FACULTY LIBERTY ,RTW LION lil LIBERTY UNION HIGH SCHOOL C vol. xxiv sRENtwooo - OAKLEY- BYRON - KNIGHTSEN June 1953 I NEW FACULTY ROOM The new faculty room has proven to be a social center, as each morning finds the teachers gathered to talk over the inter- esting events which have taken place since last they met. The first ones there find soft and comfortable seats, but the later ones must be content with the harder chairs. STARS OF TOMORROW Some of the most interesting bits of conversation have been about the new additions to the student body of L.U.H.S. in i968-1971. Steve Bronzan will no doubt be the star baseball player, if he follows in the shoes of his father, Coach Bronzan. Another star of sports will be Shawn Riley Ferrill who like his father, will doubtless excel in football. The captain of the Cadet Corps of 1970 will be Cristopher Carl Williams. He will be dashing as he escorts Francis Stack, the beautiful daughter of our science teacher, to the Mili- tary Ball. Young Inman, the youngest new addition to our faculty family, will make the best president our student body will ever have, if a sense of humor like the father's develops. FACULTY OF L.U.H.S. HAPPY RECOVERY Much concern was felt by the faculty and students over the serious illness of Mrs. B. Cross and Mr. R. Jackson. Mrs. Cross was able to return to school be- fore the end of the school year and we are happy that Mr. Jack- son will be with us this fall. They were both greatly missed, and we take this opportunity to tell them we are happy about their recovery. lF AT FIRST THEY DON'T SUCCEED . . . The male members of the fa- culty found difficulty in keeping up with the students in athletics this year. Twice the men were beaten by the B basketball team, by scores too degrading to be recorded. Condition and not age, of course, caused the fa- culty downfall. At present Mr. Williams, Commander of the Cadets, is trying desperately to qualify enough faculty men for a rifle competition with the Cadet Corps. Until wind drops to no wind at all, his success is un- certain. TO CROWN OR NOT TO CROWN! The brighter and quieter side of sports for the faculty takes place at any free moment in the faculty room. The checker board is seen often to be the center of all eyes. The games have been rather dragged-out and haphaz- ard. No official champion has been declared so far, but there have been several pretenders to the throne. Mr. Gherardi prob- ably has the best claim. Several participants would contest his right to the title, however, be- cause he uses Qthey sayj un- fair tactics, he thinks-before he moves! If not Mr. Gherardi, then Mr. Williams, whose uncanny ability to make two moves ap- pear as one gives him a decided advantage and a claim, just or not. It is quite doubtful that any champion will ever be named, and frankly, I believe no one cares. CONGRATULATIONS Two of the happy events of the year were the engagements of some of our teachers. Miss Lida Beemer, physical education teacher and Mr. Arthur Cate of the social studies department an- nounced their engagement this spring. Mrs. Mary Jane Beattie, public speaking and English teacher, announced her engage- ment to a local business man, Mr. Paul Barnes. Best wishes. to them all for a happy life ahead. FACULTY PICNIC The year ended with a picnic at Marsh Creek Springs for the faculty and their families. PRiNciPAL's MESSAGE-BOARD or TRUSTEES .Liber-ty u H s PRlNClPAL'S MESSAGE The hard and devoted work of the Liberty Lion Staff members has produced splendid annual. Because of the lack of an auditorium the meeting was held in the football bleachers on Thursday morning. After the preliminary procedure of reading the minutes and giv- ing the treasurer's report, Mr. Calloghan spoke to the students about citizenship and activities. Mr. Brongan then asked all the boys who were interested to go out for football. The meeting was adjourned. ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OFFICERS The Associated Students Offi- cers discussed their duties dur- ing the student council meeting, and they decided that one of their main duties was to set a good example for the lower- classmen. Above all, to keep their grades and merit standing as high as possible. The prob- lem of getting freshmen inter- ested in school activities was al- so discussed, which resulted in the opinion that each Asso- ciated Student officer should ex- plain his or her duties to the freshmen during their next meeting. AWARDS ASSEMBLY A special assembly was called for the giving of athletic awards. Mr. Ferrill, who was first on the program, presented the Junior Varsity and Intramural football awards. Mr. Bronzan than gave out varsity football awards which was followed by enter- tainment provided by the Rally Committee. Girls' Athletic Asso- ciation awards were given out by Rose Marie Coelho. The Asso- ciated Students' President, Bill Bristow, then urged all the stu- dents to come to the last basket- ball game of the year. All athletic letters are pur- chased with money from the Associated Students' account. STUDENTS OF LIBERTY HIGH WITNESS AMAZING DEMONSTRATION IN SCIENCE Through the courtesy of Gen- eral Motors Corporation the stu- dents at Liberty witnessedhan amazing demonstration in the field of Science. They were shown models of early inventions which led to modern day miracles. They saw how ultra-high frequency sound waves can break a glass, how to make synthetic rubber, how glass can have two properties at once and how to transform light to electricity. In another demon- stration they showed that sound can be carried by light impulses. Near the close of the show they demonstrated the principle of the iet engine with a balloon and then to top it off they de- monstrated a model iet engine so that the students could get an idea of the sound produced by a regular size engine. ASSOCIATED STUDENTS ELECTION IN NEAR FUTURE The Election of new Asso- ciated Students Officers will be held three weeks before the end of school. There haven't been any nominations yet, but there seems to be a great interest in the coming election. The Asso- ciated Students officers who are elected this year will be installed in office at the end of the year but they won't assume their duties until the fall semester. By Bill Bristow S. B. CURTIS Mr. Curtis has been the one and only advisor for the class of '53 for the past three years. He was born in Robin, Idaho, and went to grade school and high school at McCommon, Idaho. He played football, basketball, and track, and was also the president of the student body in high school. He went to L.D.S. Junior College and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, he gradu- ated from B.Y. University in Provo, Utah. Mr. Curtis has taught school in Idaho, Utah, Texas and California. He now is teaching bookkeeping and busi- ness mathematics here at Liberty High. His hobby is music, and he has written many songs. One of them has been sung by our High School Choir. SENIOR OFFICERS Howard Bloomfield proved his leadership ability in his Jun- ior year, when he was placed in charge of the Junior-Senior pic- nic. Thanks to Howard's ability to get things done, the picnic was a huge success. Howard was then overwhelmingly elect- ed President of the Senior class. Howard handled all the prob- lems which confront a Senior President with unusual ease. Vice President Bobbye Dodd did a very good iob helping him and the class. The class secre- tary, Jane Ann Nunn, kept all the class minutes and records in order. She was a very efficient secretary. Lavedia Garner had the iob of keeping the Senior accounts straight, which wasn't always an easy iob. Joanne AI- lington, Student Council Repre- sentative, attended all Student Council meetings as spokesman and representative for the mem- bers of the Senior class, and transacted business for them. Sgt.-at-Arms Joe McKinnon did a very good iob of keeping the meetings in order. SENIOR TALENT SHOW Friday, March 6, l953: The annual Senior Talent Show, T953 edition, was held in the high school gym today. To the ap- plause of a record crowd of Liberty spectators, Don Dal Porto, Stan Emerson, Jerry Von- der Ahe, and Richard Welches clowned their way to a first prize of six dollars, as the Jor- gensen Quartet, consisting of Max and John at the drums, Joe on the trumpet, and George- Christine at the piano. The fel- lows featured outlandish cos- tumes and two musical num- bers, Oh, Happy Day and The Darktown Strutters' Ball, with a dance by Christine. Freshman Frankie Griialva captured sec- ond prize of four dollars, with a talented performance of key- board magic playing such num- bers as After School Blues, l'm Yours, and Shufflin' Boo- gie. My Very-First Baseball Game was the title of an amus- ing reading by pretty senior, Wanda Wallin, who was iudged third prize winner by judges Mrs. Herstyle Morse, Teddy Ohmstede, and JoAnn Lucido. These three winners will appear at the Senior Variety Show to- night with guest stars from around this locality. Other out- standing contestants were Jean Avery, a trumpet solo, The Rosary , Janice Wright and Molly Mendez, Emelia Machado, Elinor Cabral, Grace Scott, and Betty Lee and Aline Hapton. All sang songs. GRADUATION June 5, graduation, a red let- ter day in the minds of all Liber- ty seniors. For many of them this is just a stepping stone to higher education, but for others it's the last of their schooling and, boy, are they happy. Every- one is a little nervous, hoping he can keep time marching to the solemn strains of Pomp and Circumstance. Up and down the halls can be heard, You should see my new suit, or GoIly, I can't believe graduation is al- most here. Even though many of them say they're iust glad to be graduating, there will always be a fond memory in the hearts of each senior for good old Liberty. GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENTS Seniors were called out of their Social Studies Classes to order their calling cards, an- nouncements, and caps and gowns. Mr. Inman had quite a time trying to keep his class or- ganized but Mr. Williams being well aware of the situation, re- fused to let more than three stu- dents out at a time. This served to remind the seniors that graduation is iust around the corner. SENIOR BALL Friday, May 15, l953: Pretty girls in swirling formals danced with handsome guys in trim suits to the dreamy music of Joe Palota and his orchestra in a transformation to fairyland of a gym for four hours, from 8 to 12, tonight, as the senior Class of T953 presented their senior ball for this year. The last and best dance the seniors have ever given, this proved to be a huge success and really made all their weeks of hard work worth- while. A nice send-off for a very nice Classl!!!!! INMAN x CLASS OF '54 37 LIBERTY W LION LBERTY UNION HIGH SCHOOL Vol. XXIV BRENTWOOD - OAKLEY - BYROl:l- KNIGHTSEN - - June-T953 CLASS OFFICERS The class of '54 was a very active class this year, and all of the activities required a great deal of work by the officers and by other active members of the class. Dawn Allen was elected President of the class for the Junior year, and through her leadership the class was able to move successfully through a year of work and fun. Assisting the President was the Vice Presi- dent, Jacquie Mundell. Her ar- tlstic ability and her ability to get along with people made it possible for her to work well with committees and promote the work of the class. The Secretary for the Juniors was Carole Boyer who did an excellent iob of keeping the minutes and other data and carrying on the corres- pondence of the class. Geral- dine Robinson was the Treasurer of the class. She performed a very important job, and one which kept her busy due to the many activities of the class of '54. OUR ADVISORS Although the Class of '54 had many activities and did a lot of work this year, it would not have been possible without the help and guidance of the advi- sors. Mr. Jackson, who has been the advisor of the class since the Freshman year, was very helpful to the class as a whole and es- pecially to the officers. He at- tended most of the meetings and advised the class about expendi- tures and worked right along with the members of the class to help make the activities suc- cessful. The Juniors were ap- pointed another advisor this year who did a great deal to help them. Miss Van Tassel at- tended the meetings and activi- ties, advised the class about dif- ferent matters, and helped the members of the class in working out decorations and other plans. JUNIOR PROM The Junior Class sponsored one of the best dances ever given at Liberty last March. The very successful Junior Prom was given just before Easter vaca- tion. Oriental Gardens was the theme carried out by the deco- rations. Red dragons along the walls against dark corrugated paper cherry trees in bloom, Japanese lanterns, parasols, fans, an unusual fan tree, wistaria, and the Oriental Garden all helped to carry out the theme of the very effective decorations. Behind the scenes, there was a lot of work necessary to produce such a fine dance. Chairman of the Prom was Carolee de Fre- mery who organized and planned the activities of the committees for the Prom. Many Juniors worked on committees to help prepare for the Prom and their efforts have been remembered and appreciated. MONEY-MAKING ACTIVITIES The Class of '54 became more financially stable during the Jun- ior year, a transformation which required a lot of work and re- sponsibility by the officers and other members of the class. The first activity of the Juniors during the year was the spon- soring of all concessions at the football game with Livermore. The next activity was a record dance after an afternoon foot- ball game away, and the Juniors made a good profit on the dance. They used football as the theme for decoration with the name of each varsity player printed on a star which was used for deco- ration. During basketball season, the Juniors sponsored the sale of cokes and candy at one of the games. HOMECOMING FLOAT The Juniors entered a float in the Homecoming Parade during football season which won third place. The theme of Homecoming was Gay Nineties and the Jun- iors obtained an antique coach which was made during the I800's. They polished it up and borrowed some horses to pull it, and during the parade it was filled with Juniors dressed in costumes for the l89O's. ,F 38 QU-EIOR SN-APS . . . Maintain- ing records of meetings and Sophomore events keeps Carmen Beriemen, Class Secretary, oc- cupied, and the purse-strings are in the hands of Treasurer Edith Lunsford. Janis Watson acts as Sophomore Representative in Student Council. THE '55 CLASS RINGS ARRIVEI Proud Sophomores are now wearing their beautiful Saber Jet class rings. Ordered last fall, the rings, bearing the dis- tinguished L.U.H.S. crest, plus the year of graduation, and the wearer's initials, arrived on March 20th. Everyone is showing off the third finger of his right hand! FRESHMAN INITIATION For the Freshman ' Initiation, which took place in September, Frosh were dressed as children. Girls wore short skirts, eight braids in their hair, and no socks. Boys shocked the modesty of the school by wearing short pants exposing their knees, no socks, a bow-tie and their hair parted in the middle! Although there were rules not to be violated, both Freshman and Sophomores had fun. An evening reception for the Frosh, sponsored by the Sophs, marked the official admis- sion of these new students to our L.U.H.S. family. ADVISORS The Class of '55 is indeed for- tunate in having two very cap- able teachers to serve as advi- sors. They are Miss Ilemarie Caspar and Mr. Dewel Morgan. Miss Caspar has been teaching English here in L.U.H.S. for the last two years. She is a graduate of Carthage College in Illinois, and San Jose State College here in California. Mr. Morgan who has been at Liberty for three years is a graduate of the Uni- versity of California and teaches General Science, Chemistry, and Biology. Mr. Morgan is also ad- visor of the Photo Club, thus making it quite easy to photo- graph pictures of Sophomore clubs and classes. ELECTIONS FOR 53-54 The election for Junior officers was held May 13th in all the English II classes. Enthusiastic winners are: President, Bill Syl- vester, with Dan Nelson as Vice President, Betty Funez taking over the many duties of Secre- tary, Doris Wolfe coming out ahead as a capable Treasurer, and Jean Partridge acting as Stu- dent C o u n c i I Representative. This fine group of officers, chosen for capability and will- ingness to work, will strive for the highest of goals during their Junior year. The best of luck to you, Juniors! SOPHOMORE HOP - A SUCCESS! The annual Sophomore Hop, held in the gym on February II, 1953, was a spectacular success. On Moonlight Bay, this year's theme, was beautifully carried out, complete with a glowing moon and twinkling stars. Couples swayed a r o u n d a small dinghy bursting with fra- grant almond blossoms, to the rippling melodies of Irving Car- rens and his orchestra. Thus, the Class of '55 realized not only a social, but also a financial success on a major proiect. HOMECOMING GAME AND PARADE The homecoming game, against John Swett of Crakett, held happy surprises in store for the Sophomores. Their float, made of crepe paper, a big table, and happy girls and boys, and resembling a soda fountain won 2nd prize in the homecoming parade. Con- gratulations go to Shirley Arm- strong and her assistants, Arnold Hampton, Dave Beattie, Arlene Jacobson, Tommie Bohannon, Margaret Combes, Barbara Becker, and Mary Lozano, for a magnificent iob on the float. They also held all concessions at the game. This was quite an honor, for it was the greatest game of the year. SGPHOMORE OFFICERS . . Initiation for the Class of '56 took place October 8th, The stu- dents were to dress like babies. The girls were requested to wear eight braids with a bow on each, short dresses above the knees. They were to carry a toy and to wear no makeup Cdid that look awful'?j and no socks. The boys were requested to wear short pants and bow ties. Their hair was parted in the middle and slicked down on both sides. They had no socks, but did wear suspenders. There were a lot of dirty noses and knees from roll- ing eggs and pencils down the halls. Some of the Sophomores must have had it in for the Fresh- men because they sure laid it on thick. When the Seniors were around they helped the Frosh out a lot, but they were rarely around say the Freshmen. Some of the Freshmen were made to propose to the teachers, carry Sophomores' books, sing in the halls, do can-can dances and many other things that make for a lot of fun. All Frosh are look- ing forward to initiation next year. CThe poor Class of '57.j us advice concerning our plans and activities. They come to our meetings and help us carry out our plans to the best of our abilities. We owe many thanks to our advisors for our success. They were a great help to us in our Freshman year and we look for- ward to their help and advice in future years. its first game when the Frosh played the Sophomores and won by 4 points. The games against the Juniors and Seniors were tough, but the team came through with flying colors. Ko- letta Cannon did a wonderful iob as captain and received co-operation from the team as a whole. OFFICERS The officers for the Freshman class were as follows: President, Mike O'Brien, Vice President, Roger Stone, Secretary, S a l l y Rios, Treasurer, Eddie Bryant, Sergeant-at-Arms, Albert Celioni, Student Council Rep., S y l v ia Woodward. COKE SALE The Class of '56 sold cokes and candy to thirsty and hungry spectators at the Emeryville bas- ketball game. A complete sell- out netted our Freshman class S49.lO. During the football sea- son, the Senior class had a coke sale and turned the proceeds over to the Freshman class. We thank the Seniors for the S4833 they took in as a result of the sale. ADVISORS At the first meeting of the Class of 56 we chose as our advisors Mr. Tuohey and Mrs. Cross. These advisors are to give FRESHMAN CHAMPS The Freshman girls were very happy people this year, because they were the basketball cham- pions of Liberty. The team won MARCH OF DIMES This year the Class of '56 sponsored the March of Dimes drive. They collected money by charging admission to a basket- ball game between the Freshman and Junior girls, by giving a noon dance and by having var- ious games and cans scattered over the school. Altogether they collected about S70 for the March of Dimes. DEMOCRACY IN YOUTH The Freshman Executive Com- mittee is made up of two repre- sentatives from each of the six Social Studies classes and the class officers. lt was formed be- cause the Freshman class was too big to meet at once. Also this is a way to represent every person in the class. Ideas which are brought by representatives to be discussed are usually about financial matters. When a solu- tion of an idea is finally reached the representatives report to their respective classes. This also teaches the students democracy. This has been achieved only because we had the co-operation of the entire student body. Several organiza- tions and our many sponsors made it possible to produce this bigger and better annual at such a low cost to you. Many people contributed to the actual production of this year's annual, and we wish to thank all editors, typists, and other staff members for their untiring eftorts. Our advisor, Mr. Urbick, has done more than his share in putting out this year's annual. He has assisted us and got us going when we thought we were licked. SPORTS r LIBERTY LION III' LIBERTY UNION HIGH SCHOOL Vol. XXIV BRENTWOOD - OAKLEY - BYRON - KNIGHTSEN June 1953 FOOTBALL This year for the first time since 1945 the Liberty Lions played the Antioch Panthers, coming out from behind with a score of 24-12. In the past the Lions have won three out of ten games and tied one. In 1936 the Lions and Panthers met twice with the Panthers taking both games. In 1937 it was a 6-6 tie. In 1938-1939-1940 the Lions won all of these games. Then in 1941 Antioch beat Li- berty by a score of 14-0. There were no more league games with Antioch but in 1942 and 1943 Antioch beat the Lions with scores of 19-0 and 13-0. No games were played in 1944 but in 1945 the Panthers chalked up another win with a score of 33-7. The Lions won the champion- ship this year by winning all of their league games. In the first quarter of the St. Elizabeth game little Jack Domingo completed a pass to Gutierrez for 60 yards and a touchdown. The Lions came out on top with a score of 32- 13. In the Livermore game in the first quarter Gutierrez received a pass from Domingo for 40 yards and a touchdown. In the second quarter with Domingo still passing, this time to Tarango for 55 yards and a touchdown. The final score was 40-0, Liber- ty's victory. Our homecoming game this year was played with John Swett. This was the twelfth meeting between the Lions and the John Swett Indians. Despite the slippery field caused by a steady rain, the Lions won the game with a 7 point lead. BASKETBALL This year's A Basketball Team had a successful season, al- though they only won ten while losing eleven. When the A's were playing at their best, no- body could stop them. They pulled several upsets during the year including Antioch, Alham- bra, Rio Vista, Amador and al- most beat the College of the Pacific Freshmen, losing out in the last minute. Outstanding players for the A's were Jerry Vonder Ahe averaging more than ten points a game, Don Morse, hard-driving guard, Bar- ney Dryden, 6' 3 center, and Snake Gutierrez, who aver- aged twelve points a game, while he played. The B team started out fast but then slumped and won ten and lost eleven. Outstanding players for the B's were Dave Beattie with 217 points, Carl Cross, great guard, Guido Novero, all around player and Chris Chavez, who always played his hardest. Both the 'iA's and B's finished 3rd in the league. Livermore won the Championship, while Emery B's took the Lightweights. COACHES . . Liberty U.H.S.
