' f B.. . .sl 'L ' Ak - A . - ffzi 'I I 'Iikll HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1929 fter being away from dear Liberty High for five years, I went to visit it. Old Liberty looked fam- 0 iliar, but the students did not, although I could pick out one or two familiar faces from the crowd. fmwfk I wandered down the hall to the library, and from the e, I went into the English room. I sat down at one of the desks, and as I sat there, old memories returned to me. This room was our first major room into which were ordered as little green Freshmen, and we were told to stay. It was in this room that we became acquainted with each other and with the teachers. Mr. Nash, the principal, came into the room and told us some very frightening things which would happen to us if we broke certain rules. We kept these rules for'a time, but in a few weeks, we became a little more educated, and consequently, we did not heed them so strictly. We elected our class officers a few weeks after we had entered school. Most of us did not know each other very well yet, but we voted for the person with the most pleasant-sound- ing name. The person with this name must have been Elmer Gauger because he became our president. We elected Miss Rowe for our class advisor, and later she helped us over the rough places in excellent fashion. With Elmer Gauger, as president, and Miss Rowe, as our advisor, we proceeded very rapidly. We gave sales to raise money for our Sophomore Hop the next year. The upper classmen did not treat us so terribly roughly at the Freshies' Reception. We had several large students in our class, and I guess they were afraid of these big Freshmen. At the end of our Freshman year, we elected our president for the next year. Cynthia Burroughs was chosen. We began our Sophomore year with a nbangn. We were one step higher, and even though we were shunned by the upper class- men, we were above the lowly stage of the Freshmen, who now had to look up to us. This consoled us a little. Miss Rowe was still our class advisor. This year, we were looking Forward to our Sophomore Hop, and we started working on this right away because we wanted it to be a success. The night of the Sopho- more Hop, the auditorium was decorated like a forest, with a blue sky, a deer, trees and mountains in the distance. You may be sure that everyone had a good time. Near the end of this year, we elected our officers for the ensuing year, and Ted Dwelley was elected as our president. At the end of our Sophomore year, we experienced a great loss through the death of president, Ted Dwelley. We also lost our class advisor, Miss Rowe. She left to teach in Piedmont. I wandered from the English room into the Spanish room. This brought the memories of our Junior and Senior years, be- cause we changed our major room from the English room to the flflflflfIfVlflflAfl -- -1- - 1- '---nr 111' 'yuuri ' ' - ' Q A . ml iw wffa.1n m'r V 1 H HW' ,n IQYFIT- .ff-'V lfvgff? me lm 41 'fMf .g.ff -:r:f.n. am .:r:' nm f-1 .Lbf15fP9' 1 'Lf'f1, ,ffm hffv s+::f'YifU:h3 ,ggi 5'f'f' 1'- f - W ff wi. ff:-,l:.r fm. rw: ud , .b: o mu 9011 Fw, mfw,,.+,r 9. fJ -as r13m.Qm m-my ' Qfgvgf' 5524- gf '. fist' I , r:1.,sg.q 'gfnijjktgna nfhb -N fl, m 8 ,.g',,f 35 ,t!i T!.JJ 'i' ff.'1G'f!i'fh!'! lfT9ld7 l I ' L 4' 'ff' ww W w 'f1 3z5gM11w9?'w ' 1 E' ?' Our new class advisor was Miss Maston. We were getting along very nicely when Marion left, on his departure, our vice president, James Hannum, filled the vacancy. Our Junior Prom drew a large crowd. The audirorium was decorated to represent Holland, and on the stage was a big Dutch windmill. The orchestra pit was made to look like a tulip bed, and the tulips were in the school colors. Punch was served from a small Dutch Windmill. At the end of our third year, we elected our class officers for our Senior year, and the pres- ident selected was Golda Frey. We were now high and mighties . We felt quite proud to think we had the say above the other classes, and they had to look up to us. We had a little change in our class, for Miss Masten changed her name to Mrs. Murphy. We had to look forward to our Senior Play, Senior Ball and our Commencement exercises.' Our play was The Lion and the Mouse , and we worked hard on it, but our efforts were not in vain, for we had a large crowd the night we presented it. We gave our farewell dance, the Senior Ball, on June seventh. We had a nice time, but we all felt very blue to think we would never again give a class dance. June fourteenth was certainly a night of nights for us ------ Commencement! That evening we left our high school life and ' turned our faces toward the still greater experiences of life, but we shall always keep close with us reminicences of our good times together and the memories of our association and friend- ships there. Agnes Dutro '29 ous serious Our Seniors, whom we often call The leaders of us all, Are soon to depart from Liberty High To which they came when they were not so high. The majority will go to college perchance, and some may go an the stage to dance, Others may stay hone and toil on the farm, While many may gain success with their charm. We will always think of the happy days we've had Some of those thoughts perhaps will make us sad,' Some may cause smiles and laughter too, But most of all they will make us remember you. As I placed one more on the rest, I sighed in content, and I said, uhh! I have accomplished the test ll My hunger for dreams is fed, Day by day, I added those rocks, And never dreamed that I like ships That never reach their far off docks, Would never start on life's great trips. Ah! my castle of dreams was done I gazed at it so proud and tall I saw a movement had begun, Lol My castle began to fall. V Why did I spend those years Building a thing that could never be? For all I have left are my tears . That scorch my dreams eternally. 'N Build not a castle as I did For you know it must have a scheme On lire's odd path you're apt to skid If you must make your life a dream. II 'r'I xZllll'lllf'X'1?i if-fyaf1,J PUsH ronwisnx fpj-qd here was once a group of students who started on a D I V long journey to a far land in company with a great ff-'j.fm'k host, all bound for the place called success. At elf E first everyone steeped lightly, singing by the Way, for the road was smooth and the Wayside seemed b i ht w'th flowers and everyone was made glad by joyous birds. By insensible degrees, it became rougher, and the group struggled to make their way. Sudden lulls rose before themg strange creatures crossed their paths, chill winds told of bleak regions beyond. Many halted saying, Ult is useless to go farther. Here, at least, we can make shift to live. Beyond who knows?U There was one young man and Women who merely bent their shoulders and pushed forward. New there was set across the road a deep valley, walled about, and with a gate of entrance and one of departure, each set ajar, so that one had to but put a hand to the latch and pass. Yet this valley, through which all students must journey to success, was beset by fears and hardships and frightful shapes, not truly seen, but dimly shadowed, and those of faint heart sank to the earth and gave up in despair. Mark you, they did not once stand up and put hand to the latch, but suffered the shadows to bear them down. They ended there in the Valley of Fear and Crime, but the high hearted young man and woman pushed forward and out on the other side, arriving safely at the peaks of success. Why so fearful? Why let life be robbed of all its joy? We cannot, by a lifetime of anxious thought, add an ounce of power to heart or hand. Of all the torments that beset human- ity, fezr is the worst. It is so bittprly unnecessary. With each whirl of the earth in its endless round, life shifts. Whit was so vitally important yesterday is a trifle, a futile gest- ure, today. The failure of the plan that we thought a disaster had quite another meaning. It opened 1 new road of unexpected promise and reward. Fear and hor handmaiden, Worry, never change the scheme of life. We can plan of only that whit we know, which is mer- cifully little. Why, then, are we so anxious abort a day of which we really can know nothing until it dawns and closes? This beneficial ignorance is whit gives zest and flavor to life. Why let fear rob uc of it? Turn the energy into Work, which is at once a prayer bamed.on who1esome'faith in the goodness of living. Follow the corageous spirit. Put your hand to the latch and push forward! 1 Gebie Parker '3l' I lflft fy if ' Y I 1 blunt I P L, ' ii ,if ftiwf ' , WIN TT fx- NTI- ' at - A ' 'f'llLQ - ' t' - '-xyxgrl -.MMI xxsl S's-XJ N XI! sfirlimhltlqn ' fhgahivlfm 381:41 V , 1 ' a .fc ::'i:'1,1-.fr snr' +rfip.b::,.fa 'E:1'zffxfa'13 5 290130 IM bind fu I P.'S5Z.?' Clearly the moon is shining Gently the shadows are twining, And I am softly pining, All through the night. Silently the dews are falling, Slowly the darkness is crawling, Only for you, I am calling All through the night. Sayde Cooper 130 ' MORNING A tall, majestic mountain of a deep and purple hue Gazes down upon a valley, asleep and drenched with dew. The mist is disappearingg day sweeps away the cloudsg The night is gone, and, with her, all the mourning shrouds. The bluebird gives a scolding to the naughty buttercup, Who yawns and rubs her eyes and says, UMy, my, the sun is up.n Far away is heard the whistle of a happy, farmer's boy, Beside him leaps his faithful dog, barking loud with joy. A little breeze comes rippling ing the day has just begun, A little bunny hops around, for troubles, he has none. The sky above is scattered with clouds of fleecy white, The sun above seems to rejoice as it gazes at the sight. Della Crocco 'Sl THOUGHTS ON AN EMPTY THEATER An empty theater holds a mysterious charm that one lighted, full, and ready for a performance could never possess. The dark recesses, the shadowy curtains, the enormous appearance of the stage, the rows and rows of empty seats, the echoes produc- ed by the lightest footfall or least audible whisper--all these give full play to the imagination of the theater--lover. He can visualize the lighted house, the sea of faces, he can hear the rustle of programs, the murmurs of the crowd, and the sub- dued tones of the orchestra in prelude. He can even experience that delicious thrill of excitement which comes to actor and spectator alike just before a performance. To him, alone in an empty theater, the place in a house of dreams, of possibilities for the future, a house of memories, cf glories in the past. A feeling of awe steals over him at the thought of the great voices which have in turn triumphed, wept, pleaded and rejoiced here, and he is filled with hope and aspiration for future ac- complishments. So, wandering along the aisles of the empty building, he hears the clapping of phantom hands in response to the rendi- tions of phantom actors, and his heart glories in the applause. V . . , . , Next year will be the final step in our high school career. Our Senior year. XV! This year, under the guidance of our major teacher, Miss Higgins, we made a splendid success of our Junior Prom which was held on January 26. We used a Japanese setting, con- sisting of Japanese lanterns and pennants strung the length of the hall. In the orchestra pit, there were cat-tails, other kinds of foliage, and a Japanese bridge. The entire pit was made to represent a Japanese garden. We are particularly grate- ful to the chairman of the decoration committee, ?lo.ence Gil- ' rt, for the tive ,rd effort spent in making the Prom a success. The girls of the Junior class attended a party given at the home of Miss Florence Gilhart on May 2. Dancing and amusements were enjoyedg afterwards, delicious refreshments were served by the hostess, Mrs. Gilhart. Later, a surprise shower was given for Theo Ella Thompson who was the recipient of many useful gifts. It was called a Hhurned outn shower. On Friday evening, Nay lO, the Annual Junior-Senior Banquet was held at the Liberty Union High School. Before the refresh- ments, the students attended the theater at Antioch, and after- wards they returned to the high school to dance. Later, a ban- quet was held. The table decorations were pink, and at each plate, there were rosehuds, nut haskets, which contained scrolls on which there were written original sayings. ln addition to the refreshments, there were speeches from the teachers and officers of the two classes. We Juniors thank our President, Iola Dainty and our Major teacher, Miss Higgins, for the cooperation they have given us this year. Above all, we thank the faculty and student body for the support that they gave us at our Junior Prom. Lucille Trembley '50 SENIOR NOTES he Seniors are beginning to await the Day with large eyes and panting breath. They are in sight of their goals for the present. ' They have, as leaders of the school, taken part in nearly every function: social, athletic or scholastic, and they have been a model for the lower classmen. The Senior Ball was a great success. It was plainly and tastefully decorated with crepe paper and flowers. We hope that Graduation will be as successful. We attended a very charming party which the Juniors gave for in 'Haw J J J 'wwgf'-.41, ' ' N0'IQ mYW ' 'i- gh' . avr., I ' V ,V 1 ,-7715 QQ! The Senior Play of this year, HThe Lion and the Mousen, directed by Mrs. Murphy, was of a more serious nature than some former ones. Those in the cast were: Elmer Gauger, Cynthia Burroughs, Glenn Geddes, James Hannum, Wilda Lavere, Golda Frey, Edgar Armstrong, Ramona Arata, Edwin Sellers, William Armstrong, Donner Wilder, Lausten Armstrong, Agnes Dutro, Robert Fletcher, Dorothy Regester, Laura Mantelli and Gladys Frey. The chairman of the committees were: Business Manager, Elizabeth Lawrenceg Set Committee, Pietro Demateig Stage Manager, Lee Bucky Property Committee, Zelma Hudson. Everyone seemed to enjoy the play and thought it was very well done. Though we may talk differently, and though we are glad to cover one more step in our long trek across the arid waste of education, we are sorry to say NGoodbyen to Liberty. Elizabeth Lawrence '29 ALUMNI ffm ooking over past years, we seem to see our graduates f who are away from us, making names for themselves, t:fl living happily in lovely homes, and graduating from X -4J colleges. They are busy accomplishing life's duties, XKNXANXX and we are happy to think that, four years from now, l . all of the students who are now attending Liberty will be a part of the alumni, and they will do significant things also. When one leaves high school, it is not the end of every- thing, but it is just one of the many mile-stones of life over which we must pass. Ray Houston was unable to be at the College of Agriculture in Davis, which is a branch of the University of California, at the time diplomas were issued but his was mailed to him. Ray was a graduate of this school in l925. A letter was received from Armstrong's Business College in Berkeley stating that Mary Watt, a graduate of 1928, has an important place on WThe Journaln staff, and she is doing very well. We expected that of Mary, and she has done it. And wedding bells are ringing for Ellsworth Wells and Melba Cakebread, both graduates of 1927, who are to be married June 15. High school romances do mean something after all. Agnes Frey received her diploma from the State Teachers' College of San Francisco on the tenth of May. Agnes graduated from Liberty in 1926. New on the l4 of June we will gladly leave school to have a glorious vacation. We started off our school year of l928-29 by an old clothes day the first week. November 5, Dr. Bridges of Healds' Business College gave an interesting talk of nhelp on the Way to Success.n During the month of October, Chief Hail Stone of the Cherokee tribe gave us an interesting presentation of Indian manners and dress. During this same month, Miss McDonald, spon- soring the Banking System, talked to the students. December 5, Captain McCullen, veteran of the Civil War, gave an interesting talk on a trip across the plains. Our Hi Jinks, held December 7, proved to be a great suc- cess. Two plays were produced, nThursday hveningn and nGreen Shadowsn by the Dramatic Club, coached by Mrs. Murphy and nThe Villian Still Pursuesn coached by Miss Manley. The characters were chosen from the Student Body. After the entertainment, dancing was enjoyed by those who wished to participate. December l4, the school as a whole staged a very interest- ing Christmas program. A small bag of candy was given to each student. During the month of January, Miss McDonald, now Mrs. John- son, gave the school a banner for its being a lCOZ in banking. As we are the second school in California to receive this ban- ner we feel quite proud. February 21, Mr. Spindt awarded the interclass basketball banner and a Block MLN for basket ball to Lawrence Trembley, Joe Armstrong, James Hannum, Bernard Jansse, Paul Halstead, Edgar Armstrong, Edwin Minta, Charles Snow, Warren Geddes, James Columbo and Melbor Crandell. Track MLN was given to Reed Cowan and Fred Heidorn. During the month of February, Section I of the Student Body constitution concerning the awarding of block ULN for track, was changed. It read that in order to acquire a block ULN for track the person must make five points in the county track meet. It now reads that in order to acquire a block MLW in class A or a circle MLN in class B, the contestant need only place in the county track meet. Our annual Parent's Night was held on May l7. NOTES hapter No. l5O of the California Scholarship Feder- ' ation was organized and installed at L.U.F.S. in beef 1927. Nfmtf The C.S.F. is a state scholarship organization. In order to belong to this society permanently, a student must be a member for six successive semesters, and one of these must be during his Senior year. After he has attained this height in scholarship, he receives a gold lamp of learning, and he has a gold seal stamped on his diploma. Those who hold this record four semesters keep their novitiatc pins--a small torch. The requirements for membership for a semester are: each person must have ten peintsg two of these may be given for activities, but the remaining eight must be given for scholar- ship. A grade of l counts three points, and a 2 counts one point. Only solids, subjects which require outside study, are counted for points.
