Van Dyck, the best pupil of Rubens, was born in Antwerp in 1099 and died in 1651. He spent the greater part of his life in Italy and England, the world of princes and great ladies whose favorite painter he was, and who delighted in his elegance and courtly manners. His aristocratic portraits which reflect his delicate Uatufe. are psychological and historical documents of highest value, as well as a feast for the eyes. Van Dyck, who lived barely forty-four years, painted nearly 1500 pictures, the majority of them portraits. He may be said to have founded the national school in England. G.
