The Bride On December 11, a mock wedding was held in the school theater as part of a special project in Mrs. Alex's adult roles class. The wedding united Barbie Marano and David Ayers. The bride's parents were Mr. Isaac Maxwell and Mrs. Rebecca D'Annunzio. The bride was given away by her father. The groom's parents were Mr. fames Mearns and Mrs. Victoria Honaker. The wedding party included Nicki Wash- ington (matron of honor), Angela Gallo, Stephanie Hickman, Traci Knotts, Crystal Nicholson, Laura Phillips, Janet Werner, Jenni- fer Veltri (flower girl), Mike Blake (best man), Martin Benedum, Marty Davis, Frank Hall, Mike Reed, Dennis Underwood, Tracy Web- ber, and Ray Davis (ring bearer). Also taking part in the wedding were Mick- ey Mosser (minister). Melody Norman (organ- ist), and the two ushers Julia Murphy and Lyd- ia Pierce. A reception followed the wedding. Do you take.....I now pronounce you husband and wife. Following the ceremony a reception was held in the Home-Ec. room for the wedding party and guests. Strike Relief The concert band performs the Liberty Bell . To break the tension of the strike talks, which had started to take its toll on faculty as well as students, the band presented a concert for the student body. A special song was played called The Liberty Bell . The added attraction to the song was Jenny Carstensen using the Liberty Bell from the front hall in certain parts of the song. Selections were played from the movie Top Gun which were enjoyed by all. The con- cert was a way to show how much talent the Mountaineer Band has.

There was much dissatisfaction among the teachers throughout the county this past year. The yearbook staff inter- viewed Mrs. Alfred to find out how the teachers at Liberty High School felt about the strike talk. March 19, 1987, 700 teachers from Harrison county showed up to vote on the strike. 69.5% voted yes they did want to walk. Although this was a majority, the requirement was 75% before a strike could take place. Later, Liberty held their own vote. Not everyone showed up to vote. However, of those who participated, 22 voted to walk and 17 voted not to. We asked Mrs. Alfred why there was such a split vote. Some voted against it because it went against their values and the way they were brought up. Others just could not afford to strike. Teachers supporting the strike had several reasons. First of all, they wanted to keep the quality of education that Liberty has attained. Mrs. Alfred went on to say that morale was already low and if educational stan- dards were changed for the worse it would drop even further. Teachers would not teach to their full ability. The classroom sizes would increase and good teachers would decrease. How do the students feel about a strike? We interviewed Tracy Webber, Vice-President of Student Council. Tracy said that the students did not want the teachers to strike; it could hurt in the long run. Our Student Council officers organized a meeting between the schools throughout the county. Among those represented were South Harrison, RW, Bridgeport, and Liberty. The representatives organized a rally at Liberty after school to protest the bills destroying the educational system. The students want to go about it the legal way. A student walkout could be just a way to get out of school. The students are behind the teachers; we are in this together. mr.K HIS SFNinRITY Teacher-Strike ? 28

Student Body Elections The Student Council tried something different this year with student body elections. The candidates campaigned for a week before giving speeches on Wednesday, May 13. The student body voted the next day in ballot booths in an effort to try to make the elections more realistic and also to allow the stu- dents to vote in private. Students could vote in the morning, between classes and during lunch. They went to their class booth and gave their name and homeroom. The name was then checked off, and he or she was given a ballot. The folded ballots were then dropped in the locked, bal- lot box. A campaign was started for write-in candidates, but all write-ins were disqualified because they had not submitted the required petition. Leaving the sophomore voting booth after marking her ballots is Cara Schmesing. Hands Across Liberty On April 28, 1987, the stu- dent body and faculty gathered around the front circle. They united to fight world hunger. To participate in the event, stu- dents purchased $.80 tickets and faculty tickets were $1.50. The tickets were priced equiv- alent to that of a lunch ticket. The joining of hands was a huge success. Nearly 500 indi- viduals participated. News me- dia came out to capture the live event and to watch Mr. Currey present a check to the Crop or- ganization for 370.25. This event really proved that we are a family! 30
