There was much dissatisfaction among the teachers throughout the county this past year. The yearbook staff inter- viewed Mrs. Alfred to find out how the teachers at Liberty High School felt about the strike talk. March 19, 1987, 700 teachers from Harrison county showed up to vote on the strike. 69.5% voted yes they did want to walk. Although this was a majority, the requirement was 75% before a strike could take place. Later, Liberty held their own vote. Not everyone showed up to vote. However, of those who participated, 22 voted to walk and 17 voted not to. We asked Mrs. Alfred why there was such a split vote. Some voted against it because it went against their values and the way they were brought up. Others just could not afford to strike. Teachers supporting the strike had several reasons. First of all, they wanted to keep the quality of education that Liberty has attained. Mrs. Alfred went on to say that morale was already low and if educational stan- dards were changed for the worse it would drop even further. Teachers would not teach to their full ability. The classroom sizes would increase and good teachers would decrease. How do the students feel about a strike? We interviewed Tracy Webber, Vice-President of Student Council. Tracy said that the students did not want the teachers to strike; it could hurt in the long run. Our Student Council officers organized a meeting between the schools throughout the county. Among those represented were South Harrison, RW, Bridgeport, and Liberty. The representatives organized a rally at Liberty after school to protest the bills destroying the educational system. The students want to go about it the legal way. A student walkout could be just a way to get out of school. The students are behind the teachers; we are in this together. mr.K HIS SFNinRITY Teacher-Strike ? 28
