Text from Pages 1 - 232 of the 1986 volume:

Yesterday, Tomorrow, ... Forever Our yesterdays are completed with more than just memories. As time is ever silently turning over his page,” we illustrate between these covers the memora- ble occasions, the knowledge, and the experience which we have gained in our high school days. We present this yearbook as an example of what we. as a student body, have accomplished. It is our hope that the 1985-86 memories will stand as a bridge link- ing our past three years to the rest of our lives. We, the Class of 1986, feel that we have crossed this bridge successfully and hope that many others will follow, dreaming of yesterday, tommorow, and forever. 1986-1986 Yearbook Staff Left to Right: Dan Bordo, Beth Davis, Tammy Moore, Dawn Boggs, Jennifer Richards, Lisa Tragemann, The Mountain- eer , T. There were many strange and amusing sights as stu- dents dressed in true Hawaiian and noble Roman style, while song filled the halls with frantic Sophomore lyrics. Thursday was wonderfully silent as sophomore mouths were buttoned” shut; hat day topped off the week. Tradi- tional spirit day rounded out the week with students at their best wearing red, white, and blue. Fri- day night's loss to Lincoln did not stand in our way. Students swayed to the sounds of R.J.’s Mobile Mu- sic Saturday night, as they strolled over the pier and gazed into the starlight. 14 16 INDIVIDUALS Best Built... As with other sports’ seasons, the cheerleaders’ job does not end when the football games do. They must continue to work all through the year to help provide the spirit that makes our school the best. Three qualities that a squad must have in order to be a success are hard work, dedication, and cooperation. You can tell by looking at our squad that they possess these qualities. This past summer they attended a NCA Cheerleading Camp in Williamsburg, Virginia, where they received four blue ribbons and a spirit stick. They also won the Award of Excellence. All State Choir 177 Left to Right: Lisa Childers, Melody Norman The November Flood On November 4, 1985, students were sent home early from school because of high waters. No one ever imagined the disaster that was to take place on November 5. Twenty-nine counties were struck by a flood, causing an estimated 500 million dollars worth of damage. Thirty eight people lost their lives, ten were missing, and 2,587 were found homeless. Many businesses were temporarily put out of commission, while others would never re-open. Houses, cars, and livestock were moved, in many cases miles from where they belonged. Some farmers not only lost their livestock, but they will never be able to farm on their land again. National Guardsmen, doctors. State Police, and many other volunteers worked around the clock. With the aid of the Red Cross and other organizations, rescue missions were set up to house, feed, and clothe the homeless. Many weeks were spent in clean up and relocation efforts. The most important thing to remember about the flood is the fact that our State pulled together in a time of disaster and we made it”! 179 180 181 Italian Students During the month of February, Liberty High School was visited by 15 Italian students and their teacher, Mrs. Donata Viviani. They were participating in the school exchange program spon- sored by the National Association of Secondary School Princi- pals. These students stayed with Liberty High School students to observe the American culture and style of life. A variety of activities was planned for the visitors while at Liberty to acquaint them with our educational and leisure activities. On Feb. 13, the students traveled to Charleston to tour the Capitol and visit the Cultural Center. During their stay in America, they also enjoyed dances, basketball games, and shopping at American malls. Mrs. Giese, our Italian teacher, arranged for the exchange of these students. She hopes that these visits and friendships will continue. Next year she plans to take a group of Liberty students to visit their school in Rovereto, Italy. This exchange of students be- tween schools was a meaningful and wonderful experience not to be soon forgotten. Three times this year the staff and student body here at Liberty have been shak- en by the tragedy of the untimely death of our own. At times like these, we all look deep within ourselves for the meaning of life and realize what a precious and fragile gift that life is. 189 Valedictorians and Salutatorian Cheryl Ashcraft Lisa Sabatelli Eric Collins Our senior year- we finally made it! It hardly seems like three years ago that we stepped into the halls of Liberty, for the most part, very scared sophomores. Time has passed much too quickly. As I leave here, I sometimes wonder how we survived. There has been so much learning, both through classes and the many activities we have participated in. I would like to thank my family, teachers, and friends for never giving up on me and for never letting me give up on myself. And to the Class of 1986, I would like to say -it has been three super years, truly three of the best years of my life. I wish you all the best in life — may happiness and love abound. You will always hold a special place in my heart. God bless you. — Cheryl Ashcraft Numbers do not determine an age, the mind does. Each time we look back on these three years at Liberty, we return to our youth and find inspiration. Our high school years give us the means of retaining a jovial mind and heart. We seem to forget any bad feeling toward these years, but the great memories will last forever. Our years in high school provide the foundation for building our dreams into reality. —Eric Collins 190 Through my years at Liberty I have set goals for myself, goals that at first seemed impossible. But with the help and support from my family, friends and a great faculty, I was able to reach those goals and in the process become a more independent person. When I leave Liberty, I will take with me all the memories and experiences that I have shared with everyone. To all my fellow classmates of '86, I would like to wish you much happiness and success in everything you do and may you all get the best that life has to offer. — Lisa Sabatelli As I finish my senior year at Liberty, I am filled with anticipation as well as dread. I am anticipating all of the good times to come, but I am also dread- ing going off into the world on my own. My years at Liberty have been the best of my life — especially my senior year. It is hard for me to believe that things can only get better. When I leave Liberty, I will take with me three years worth of memories so that whenever I am down, I can look back on my high school years. I had good times and bad times, but I still survived. If things can only get better, how bad could they be? Best of luck to everyone, and may you get all you want out of life. — Tracy Tragemann Tracy Tragemann 191 Paula Louden Chanda McCracken Missy Shiffra Lisa Tragemann Kim Boyce Debbie Lipscomb 192 Johnna Pokrzywa 1986 Prom Court Maria Curia The theme of the 1986 From was These Dreams” by Heart.
