The best way to get somewhere and become someone is through the medium of good hard work, well planned, honestly and efficiently done. The prepared succeed. They know what they want and how to get it. They have worthwhile goals and put them into action. There are opportunities for those who are pre- pared to grasp them. Opportunity knocks at the door of every person who studies and works hard, plans well, and has good character. Medical Professionalists Get The Medical Professionalist Club has been a part of the club program at Liberty High School since the school opened in the fall of 1973. It is composed of students who hope to enter a career in the medical profes- sions. During the 1979-80 school year, the Club has prepared a Christmas basket and presented it to the Salvation Army for distribution to the needy. Two activities to raise money were a candy guess and Easter egg raffle. The money was used for a trip to Alderson Broaddus College on April 11, to tour the campus and give students an opportunity to learn more about availability of medical professions. 167 Actively Involved Chess Club Front Row, Sitting, Left to Right — Rod Nutter. DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION CLUBS OF AMERICA — DECA is a co-curricular club associated with the Dis- tributive Education Department's Junior-Senior Marketing and the Junior-Senior Credit and Banking programs. Activities of the Club are career and community-related services. Liberty’s DECA sends members to participate in Clarksburg Chamber of Commerce meetings. The Club performs business services for the free Mother-Baby Clinic, Toastmasters Inter- national, the Clarksburg Chamber of Commerce and the school office. Speakers are from the fields of Banking and Business. This broadens understanding of Coopera- tive Education part-time jobs for which students receive credit as well as pay. The Clubs primary project is sponsoring the school store, Currey's Corner (shown here), which is open before school, as well as during the first period and briefly at noontime. The store provides learning opportunities in running a small business such as cashiering, display, promotion, bookkeeping, purchasing and inventory con- trol. Addition of the TRS-80 computer this year has provided computerized mailing, sorting, inventory, general ledger, payroll, accounts receivable, and data processing, editing capabilities to the services which the Club can provide. The year began with a student leadership conference in August at Cedar Lakes, followed by the opening of the store with textbook sales. Major events of the Spring are a trip to North Marion High School, picnic, and a 3-day trip to Huntington for participation in WV State Career development conference with disco evening. Win- ners will receive free transportation to National DECA competition in Florida. 1979-80 Officers: Katrina Allman, President, Diana Lewis, Vice-President; Janice DeWitt, Secretary; Lorri Robey, Treasurer. Katrina is also Secretary of WV State DECA. Sponsor: Mrs. Carole Heim, Rm. 317. 170 Foreign Language Club First Row — Mrs. Furbee, Advisor. The local youth organization operates as an integral part of the school business teachers, school administrators, businessmen, and the State Department of Education. • The activities of the Future Business Leaders of America provide an opportunity for business students to prepare for business and office occupations. Members of FBLA learn how to engage in individual and group business enterprises. Some of our activities have been a dance in November with the Bowling Club, col- lection of canned food, making Valentine cards for a nursing home, making Easter baskets for a orphanage, and selling posters and candy bars that went very well. Each year there is a Regional Conference held at Fairmont State College. Business students participating this year were Donna Riley, Accounting; Leslie Smith, Typ- ing II; Cecilia Fugo, Typing I; Regina Spadafore, Business Math II; Tina Ferrari, Business Law; Melissa Reed, Business Communication; and Carol Rymasz, Voting Delegate.
