The traditional “Homecoming Week got underway on Monday, October 9. With Monday being designated as “Senior Day every Senior could make any Sophomore sing our “Fight Song or the Alma Mater and. unfortunately for some sophomores, both. On Tuesday, “Hat Day was celebrated. With almost everyone participating, there was a variety of hats. What better way is there to display school spirit than by wearing red. white, and blue? Throughout LHS on Wednesday the Mountaineer colors could be seen. Since our rival for the Homecoming game would be the Morgantown Mohigans it was decided that Thursday would be “Massacre Mohigans Day. Each class displayed their talent and their school spirit by wearing badges and balloons all day. With the week drawing to a close the excitement within LHS was immense. Friday was selected to be Spirit Day. and the Homecoming thuse was held in the school gym. Everyone at Liberty must have been in high spirits that day because Mr. Currey said. “It's a good thing we’re not having a winning season or you wouldn’t be able to keep the roof on this place. The Homecoming Game between the home standing Liberty High School Mountaineers and the Morgantown Mohigans was held at Hite Field. Friday. October 13 at 7:30 p.m. The Homecoming Dance was held Saturday. October 14 at the Liberty High School cafeteria. Despite the rain at the football game. Homecoming 1978 will be remembered for all the memories it has given to us. 102 Jami Whitehair Homecoming Queen Elected Homecoming Queen, was Jamie Whitehair. daughter of Mr. Mrs. James Whitehair. With a crop of youngsters. Coach Tom Hilton and his crew try to prepare his team for a year of experiment- ing and learning. Knowing the task placed upon their shoulders, the senior players (Greg Warner. John Garrison. Keith Curry. Mike Hinzman. and Donald Hill) put on their gear for their last year of together- ness. Their leadership will determine the rise or the fall of the Mounties. As the first games draws closer, the squad takes on the season as “The Young and the Restless.” With a full head of steam, the Mountaineers headed for East-West Stadium. Their first opponent would be East Fairmont. The first half proved to be a tough defensive battle as neither of them could move across the end zone stripe. The second half became a tragedy as error and sheer exhaustion put an end to the hopes of a victory. 22-0. On a brisk night, they traveled to Elkins. The high spirits of the squad were soon dampened by cool atmosphere and the bite of the Tigers. The Mountai- neers would next take on Bridgeport with an 0-2 mark. 40-8. Bridgeport was taken on by our team with great intensity. The team stayed even much of the first half as both defenses stood firm. However, unfortunate mistakes and a powerful offense for the Indians made the difference. 39-0 With their young spirits dying, the Mountaineers went on the road to l.ewis County. Pinpoint passing by Junior quarterback Brad Sprouse to Junior Bill Eceson drew them to a near victory. 17-14. The next week. Liberty traveled to a packed West Side Stadium to battle the unbeaten Polar Bears. Failing to put points on the board had been the Mountaineers downfall in previous games. They had their offense rolling but could not score as the Bears dug in when the Mountaineers got close. 39-0. M2 With winter stepping in. Liberty went to a cold, rain-drenched Stydahar Field to skin the Cougars of Lincoln High. Penalties, fumbles, and interceptions put end to all Mountaineer attacks. The cold rain and a tough Lincoln defense froze on the Mounties game plan. 22-0. Homecoming Game, the high-light of all football seasons was against Morgantown. The mud covered Hite Held proved to be as tough an opponent as the Mohigans. It seemed to spoil all Liberty threats. The team still pushed on but to no avail. 52-12. Home again for the rest of the season, the Liberty Mountaineers came on the field to face Roosevelt Wilson. Liberty scored first and the hopes of a victory was drawing near. The Prexies. however, were not to be denied. They built up a late in the game surge and nipped the Mountaineers, 8-6. Zopp and his gang were in town and Hilton's gang prepared for an ambush. The Mountaineers made the first strive for the goal line and took a 6-0 lead. A come from behind finish by the Buc-Ups left the team and fans heartbroken. 8-6. Washington Irving and Liberty always ensure an evening of exciting football. The game was a scoreless deadlock at halftime and all fans stayed glued to the crosstown square-off. Tense moments filled the sec- ond half as neither defense would yield to the task. The Hilltopper experience made the deciding factor and the Mountaineers went down in defeat. 46-0. The school and team spirit of the Liberty Mountai- neers was carried out wholeheartedly throughout the entire football season. In time our organization shall grow and with it the togetherness of the members. Though disappointments plagued the '78 club, the coaches, team, players, and fans will never forget the feelings of joy along w ith the bad they have experi- enced this year. All the memories have already been concealed in their minds and shall be cherished for- ever. 113 A Long Season 114 Right: Junior Bill Leeson is assisted by Mgr Brian Moore and Dr. Simmons. What could possibly inspire an athlete to go through that much punishment? Is it because they enjoy running or because they have the desire to push themselves to the limit for their team? Liberty run- ners have that desire, the desire to produce for their team, school, and themselves. For the Mountaineer cross country squad, this was not a rebuilding year even though the team consisted of only three senior runners (Steve Davis, Tom McIntyre, and Mike Morris). It was in fact a season to compete with the front runners (Fairmont West and Elkins). Though never having all three seniors completely healthy, the Mounties pressured for top spots the entire year and never finished under third place in a conference meet. The varsity was made complete by Juniors Bob Waugh and Craig Wilson, Sophomores Kevin Anderson and David Jones. First year coach, Jim Cleavenger, enjoyed his time spent with the team. He properly prepared his group to represent Liberty with eagerness and honor. High honors on the team were taken by Senior Captain Steve Davis, an he ended his final year of prosperous competition. Steve made the All Big Ten team, the All Regional team, and placed 20th in the state meet in Wheeling. He as well as the other sen- iors will be greatly missed on the Mountaineer squad. The time spent brought togetherness. The together- ness brought on the respect of teams state-wide. This year’s Mountaineer team made their presence known in the sport of cross country. 120 121 Girl’s Basketball Kneeling — Lisa McGuire. Shan Reed. Peggy Smith. Dian Ashcraft. Connie Scolapio. Coach Sally Amsler 122 Senior 123 The Liberty High School Mountain Women under Coach Sally Amsler finished the season with a fine 12-6 record. The Mountain Women began the season with a third place finish in the Kiawanis Tournament held at Lincoln High School. During the course of the season the Mountain Women averaged 62 points per game while giving up 50 points per game. After win- ning 9 out of their last 11 games, the Mountain Women entered the sectional tournament with a 12-6 record. Opening the tournament with a win over Bridgeport the Mountain Women found themselves facing rival WI in the finals. It was a hard fought bat- tle, but the season had ended. The Mountain Women came up on the short end of the 62-52 score. Two sen- iors, Shari Reed and Peggy Smith were named to the All-Tournament Team. 124 -—J Above: Ready, aim. fire. They have won several awards dur- ing the ’78-'79 school term. In the summer of '78 when they attended camp at Lynchburg. Virginia, the varsity squad received blue ribbons every night and the spirit stick two nights. The junior varsity squad was also awarded ribbons every night. On the final day of camp, the varsity squad was selected to compete for the AWARD OF EXCELLENCE. Kim Lamm, head cheerleader, was chosen as a candidate for All-American Shout-it- Outer. In September football was underway. Rain. snow, sleet, or hail, the Liberty cheerleaders will never fail.” The cheerleaders, during this time, also kept the spirit alive for girls basketball; we received the BEST CHEERING SECTION trophy at Sectional Tournaments. Then came basketball season. Everyone could feel the spirit and enthusiasm in the halls. We all thought the ceiling was going to blow off 01’ Liberty!! The cheerleaders were right there, leading the way. The basketball team, proceeding to State Tournaments, gave the cheerleaders a chance to show their talent in front of some of the most important people in the state. The Coliseum was packed on the final night of play. The games were over, and the awards were being given out. The All-Tournament team had already been named. Next came the cheering awards. The announcer’s voice slowly said, “And the Best Cheerleaders award goes to . . . Liberty High School!” You could hear the screams of the six girls all over the Coliseum. After the Mountaineers had clinched the Harrison County and Big Ten Champi- onships. this idea became a possibility. The trip to Morgantown and the State Tournament would come via Parkersburg. The Mountaineers had defeated Grafton 55-54 and Bridgeport 84-71 to take the Sectional Title. The Mountaineers then were on their way to Parkersburg to face the Parkersburg High School Big Reds whom they defeated 71-57, then the State ranked Mountaineers were on their way to the Coliseum. Ranked 5th in the Associated Press Final Season Rankings the Mountaineers faced DuPont in the opening round of the Annual State Basketball Tour- nament. The Mountaineers held off a furious rally by the Panthers and won the game 65-64. Liberty’s next opponent went on to win the State Championship. The Mountaineers gave the Princeton Tigers all that they could handle as they fought to the end of the game. The Mountaineers lost the game 75- 71: and the season had come to an end. Coach Jim Cleavenger's team was led by seniors: Scott Carey. Rod Knight. Dave McCauley, and Jeff Ritter. They are a part of Wrestling, and it is a part of the excitement for Liberty fans this season. After viewing the success and ambitious work of the Moun- taineer squad. Liberty High fans have another sport to rejoice over. Coach Tom Hilton, looking for the secret to suc- cess. took a group of young grapplers and turned them into state contenders. Putting the “never say die attitude into their minds and heart. Coach Hilton pushed the team to a little taste of glory and satisfac- tion for them as well as himself. Starting off with ten straight victories. Senior Cap- tain Tom McIntyre found himself on the losing end of a 4-1 decision in the East Fairmont Invitational. After this heartbreaker Tom compiled a 28-3 record, which included successfully defending the Big Ten and Regional titles and winning a fourth position in the state tournament. Senior transfer student Mike Collins also performed well for himself as he placed second in the East Fairmont Invitational, the Big Ten. and took the Regional title on his way to the state tournament. Sophomore stars Kevin Anderson and Steve Dan- iels found themselves competing with the best as they too wrestled their ways to Wheeling. Kevin, the last of the Anderson brothers, pinned his way to Regional championship only to lose some close and disap- pointing decisions when it counted the most. Steve, the first tourney champ of the season took a victory in the East Fairmont Invitational. The twosome will be back for the next two years, so look out Liberty foes. The Liberty High Band, under the direction of Mike Pern has completed a very successful year. They have competed in various parades and field competi- tions, placing in several of the events. One of their greatest honors was to receive first place at the Mountain State Forest Fes- tival in Elkins. They were chosen to appear as the honor band for the year ’79- ’80. Also, for the first time since consolidation of Lib- erty, three students were selected to perform in the 1979 All-State Band. They were Denise Collins, Bas- soon; Mike Kinney, Tenor Sax; Radonna Plaugher, French Horn. The members of the band wish to thank the band boosters for their time and effort, but most of all, they would like to thank Mr. Perri, for his concern and dedication to make this year one of the best possi- ble. The 120 piece marching band continued its tradition as a great example of pride, showmanship, and musical excellence — an ideal high school band. 170 Hard Work Pays Off 171 L.H.S. Mary McGinnis. Bernard Flaherty, Carla Gaynor, and Bob Greer became aware of this when they received the leading roles in Irving Berlin’s “Annie Get Your Gun”, the all-school play directed by Miss Linda Beth Floyd. Annie Oakley was portrayed by Mary McGinnis while the role of Frank Butler was taken on by Ber- nard Flaherty. Carla Gaynor played the part of Dolly Tate, the conceited society lady and the role of Char- lie Davenport, the eager businessman, was portrayed by Bob Greer. The secondary leads included Glenn Kuhar as Sit- ting Bull. Grant Smith as Buffalo Bill and Ray Rose as Pawnee Bill. Despite the minor setbacks caused by faulty props and illnesses the talent, devotion and patience of both the cast and crew members became evident as “Annie, Get Your Gun” emerged as a truly spectacu- lar performance. Technical Directors Jo Lea Gallo and Bobbie Reeves, along with their team of invinci- ble stage crew members turned out superbly designed backgrounds scene after scene. The music for the production was provided by 15 talented LHS students under the direction of Mr. Mike Perri. Mrs. Lettie Furbee was responsible for the excellent direction of vocal performances. The 8 dancers, instructed by Mrs. Bonnie McGowan, added color and variety to the show. Faculty members got in to the act as Miss Kathy Gainer handled the publicity, Mrs. Karen Bowers helped with the sets, and Mr. Joe Gonzalez was responsible for the special effects. “Annie Get Your Gun” was truly a commendable display of group effort and school spirit and was a tremendous success. 190 193 Our First Annual. . .
