SENIOR RECORD . . . Now as we. The class of '47, are abouf To become freshmen in The School of Life leT us reminisce over our experiences since we became freshmen in Liberfy High School. As sophomores Tom Finn moved up To The presidency wiTh Allan Hasbrouck, vice-presidenT, and Bill Haflin, Treasurer. Wesley Many again held The posiTion of secreTary, which office he was To reTain ThroughouT The succeeding elecfions. Again a class parTy highlighTed our social affairs for The year. ThaT spring, class elecTions were held for The following year. Irving Doynow was chosen presi- denT and David Johnson, vice-presidenf. Bill Haflin, who refained his posifion of Treasurer, had To relinquish iT in The middle of The year To Norberf Mafzinger, due To his holding Too many poinTs. AlThough noT parT of our class hisTory iT may be inTeresTing To noTe ThaT several world evenfs made imporTanT hisfory during our sophomore year. ln May, l945, V-E Day was proclaimed, a monfh afTer Presidenf RoosevelT's deafh on April IZ. ThaT summer Japan surrendered, Thus end- ing World W'ar Two. By The Time we reached The sTaTus of iuniors we had gafhered enough courage To underfake somefhing never before aTTempTed in L.H.S. Under The direcTion of Mrs. Dowling we wrofe our own Junior play, Uncle Harry Comes To, which was presenfed in April. ThaT spring iT was our class' Turn To produce The STudenT Council officers for The following year. Irving Doynow, presidenT, and Donald Huffmire, vice-presidenT, were The sTudenT body's choice. Under The leadership of Donald Hansen we aT lasT could proudly be known as The Senior Class. Larry Klein and Allan Hasbrouck were vice-presidenf and Treasurer respecfively. We sTarTed The year successfully wiTh The magazine drive, in which The sales nearly doubled Those of The previous year, making This The largesf drive ever sfaged. AnoTher ouTsTanding evenT was The senior-faculfy baskefball game in March, in which boTh boys' and girls' senior Teams were vicforious. This was The firsT Time ThaT The faculfy was complefely defeafed. The season showed the strength of the team resting with the exper- ienced quintet ot' Finn fco-captainl. Benjamin, Huffmire, Ceo-captainl. Hasbrouck and Holland and the reserves sparked by llulse, Cohen and Many. Opening the '46-'-17 season on November 29, the boys defeated Kerhonkson 53-12 with little trouble. Then, to con- tinue the warm-up tilts Fallsburg ZlIlCi'EllQ1'1VlllC were defeated by scores of 30-24 and -16-30. respectively. To start the Duso season Newburgh was vanquished 46-21 and Middletown outscored 46-41. High point of the season came when the Tribe outfought and outplayed Kingston to the tune of 41-35. Leading our high flyers in this game was Don Hutlniire who racked up 15 points and held Ed Weaver, Duso high scorer, to 12 markers. Closing out the first half, Port Jervis was beaten 47-24 and Monticello was whipped 36-24 to Liberty's great joy. This last Duso victory found Liberty uncontested winner of the first half. Ellenville again succumbed to Liberty 44-34 to start the second half. First Duso team to fall prey to Liberty in this half was Newburgh -47-351 they were joined a week later by Middletown 53-36. Then the boys jour- neyed to Kingston to take en the Kiasmen and to endeavor to beat the leading contender for the Duso crown. Th Kingston men outscored Lib- erty 26-6 at the end of the first 16 minutes and. hghting hard in the second half. Liberty outscored their opponents. However the early lead couldn't be overcome and we were given our first Duso setback 41-56. The next week Port almost gave Las our second loss when they led by two points with eight seconds to play. but VVes Many dropped a long one-hander to tie the score. In the overtime Benjamin and lluffmire outscored their rivals to hang up our eighth Duso win 33-30. Monticello was the next in line to go down to our boys. 44-37. as Al Hasbrouck led the way with 22 points. The next week our tilt with Goshen was a sad experience 29-45. Kingston won the second halt' of the Duso and the playoff was sched- uled for the Middletown court. The game found the Redmen up on their toes turning in a spectacular tirst half. leading by two points. However, the loss of Holland in the third quarter slowed the fellows down and Kingston jumped to a four point lead which they held until the final minutes. Then they 1'eally went to town and Liberty suffered its greatest defeat 41-53. The Duso season ended with Libert.y's Don Iluffmire plac- ing second in the league with 165 points. Enlarging the already extensive sports program, Liberty was introduced to the rugged sport ot wrestling this year. Under the guidance ot Pop Caivano, an experienced wrestler himselt, the matmen journeyed to Nyack and Suttern and also held a home contest with Suttern. While our inexper- ienced boys lost all three contests, they gained knowledge which should help them in the tuture. The closest contest ot the year was the one at home with Suttern on January 3l. ln the opening matches, l'lelgesen and Leibowitz were pin- ned to give Suttern a ten point lead. ln the next, Hatlin outpointed his man to give Liberty three points, but Rextord was pinned and Osit and Stecher were outpointed in the tollowing battles, malcing the score I-3. IN THE GYM AND ON THE FIELD By Beatrice Ilardenbergh Girls' Sports Editor Girls' sports this year seemed to be on a decline. The enthusiasm may not have been so great because of the discontinuation of awards for top noon-hour and after school teams. It was felt that the best athletes in the school were not recognized under the old system of awards. Under the new system each girl who participates in any extra-curricular sport is given credit in points. When a sufiicient number of points are earned the girl is entitled to an award. Soccer and hockey season were very slow. The after school games were discontinued because of unsportsmanlike conduct During volleyball season more girls turned out mainly because Miss King insisted that if you didn't play volleyball you could not play basketball. The volleyball championship game was one of the most spectacular games of the season. Eunice Freer's after school gang was scheduled to play Beetle Harden- bergh's noon hour tribe. At the half Freer's team was leading by a score of I8-3. Beetle's team came through with a victory of 25-18. What a breath- taking game! Basketball season ended with the championship game being played off in chapel. This was an entire- ly new idea for a chapel program. Little Eva's noon- hour team really skunked the Bressler team, who were champs in the after school league. Bowling and ping pong drew more girls out than was expected. Shirley Kranas was again girls' ping pong champ for the third consecutive year. Tessie Watson's bowling team was the winner of the first bowling tournament. Members of her team were awarded pins to designate their striking ability. .1..,--iv .,,, -H- C?,'i1RW1'i kxlif ivwim- mx ' Q x R xxx 1 i i it l Q. lik Y 0 3 1 1 .XD i VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM an BW? wi A Bl Yr Pzz.
