The many parades and activities of those few days will always be remembered. Because of this great occasion the annual staff has made the 1956 Harvester apart of this celebration, Remember that our town was not always as it is pic- tured. Much progress has been made in the past two hun- dred years. As editor I hope that, as you look through the pages of this book, you will remember this year as a very special one in your life. Education is an intangible thing based on the ideologies our changing society warrants and condones. It is steeled and molded by our churches, homes, news- papers, businessmen, teachers, and in all our very self. These peo- ple working together have provided you, the young people of Liberty, the best that we can offer. Take advantage of your education as there has been much sacrifice and effort awarded to you, the finished prod- uct. . Sincerely., if F W.G. Among these public buildings was the Post Office pictured on the opposite page. After the expansion of the Texas and New Orleans Railroad through Liberty, a regular means of mail transportation was established. New developments in Liberty's postal system have shown various improve- ments. These units have developed from a one-room school house of years ago Even though the high school and junior high are adequate, the en- largement of these is becoming apparent. Liberty The Cradle of Texas Independence One of Liberty 's leading natural industries is oil. The town is sur- rounded by different oil fields owned by numerous companies, Since the oil boom in 1925, the city's growth has been amazing. Only three years after the boom the only paved road, now known as Highway 90, ran from coast to coast through Liberty. Paved streets, modern buildings, and new residential additions have been made to add to the growth of the town of which everyone is proud, Advertising L iw... LIBERTY CELEBRATES SAN IACINTO DAY LIBERTY, April 22. Visitors and citizens of this town took part in a great San Jacinto an- niversaryhere yesterday. Many of those partic- ipating saw Liberty under quite different circum- stances last year during the Runaway Scrape. The program began at dawn with the firing of salutes and continued throughout the day. Dancing and oratory made up much of the festiv- ity. William Hardin made up the principal ad- dress at an evening assembly, and then toasts were drank. Among them were, Texas-May her foes turn pale at her name, and may she flourish until time is no more g the Star of Texas - a beacon light to the path of liberty , Soldiers of Texas - may their breastworks be Honor, and Fear always a day's marchbehind them. A toast to William Barret Travis brought a moment of silence to the crowd. After a total of thirteen toasts, the party broke up.
