The second semester these instructors teach grammar and composition. These students study many phases of public speaking such as proper diction, debate and the radio speech. The Spanish course consists of the study of the essentials of grammar, the development of a simple vocabulary, and readings based on present-day Spanish and Spanish-American life. 63 The commercial subjects, bookkeeping, shorthand, and typing, are taught for the purpose of preparing the students for future business associations. KX, Wei Y The World History course offers a study of the background of our civilization. In the above picture one of the students is giving an interesting report to the class. World History and American History are taught by Mrs. Sandlin, while Mr. Hughes teaches Civics and Economics. 64 In the above picture Mr. Hester shows the class how to manipulate X and Y. In addition to his Algebra class, he teaches General Math. In our math department are Mr. Cooley and Mr. Harlan as well. Mr. Adams explains to the General Science class some interesting facts about our body using the new skeleton, Orthello. Other sciences offeredare biology, physiology, and chemistry. Some of the fields taught in the various classes are designing and sewing garments and planning, cooking, and sewing meals. These and many others are under the supervision of Mrs. Biggs. W,-2 66 IX' 5s. i 1 Two vocational subjects taught in our school are Distributive Education and urivers Education. Dis- tributive Education, under the supervision of Mr. G. E. Stanzel, merits two credits. The students are not only instructed along the lines of business, but they have actual on-the-job experience. Students in Driver Education, under the careful instruction of Mr. A. B. Cooley, learn the art of safe, courteous driving behind the wheel, Vocational Agriculture, taught by Mr. O. L. Huggins, is another vocationalsubject taught in our school. ,f 'Q' 67 The High School Choir under the direction of Mr. Unberfield, adds pleasure to the participant's daily routine. This organization furnishes the special music for Baccalaureate each year. The librarian, Mrs. Sandlin, and the librarians, high school girls, help to solve many students' academic problemsthrough the year. These girls and their supervisor arrange all books and magazines and keep an accurate record of them. One part ofthe Liberty High School's spic-and-span crew is the new high school cafe- teria. These ladies, pictured above, serve the noon mealto many hungry students each day. The afternoon program, which was a reminiscence of earlier years, started the Homecoming activities. Later in the day the graduates enjoyed a planned reception and a conducted tour through the new building. The presentation of the Queen preceded . the tilt which matched Liberty and Cedar Bayou. Immediately following the game a dance was held in the City Hall. A toast to Auld Lang Syne An Ex enjoys the hospitality of the reception committee. 79 M . P 'TF sv' --.air-at ET Banquet tables and guests HA RV EY MA SON The master magician The Episcopal Parish Hall was literally glowing with glittering Christmas decorations on December 8, 1951, depicting the atmos- phere for the annual Football-Band Banquet. The main speaker of the evening was Andy Anderson from Houston who provided the ban- quet guests with many laughs as well as a serious thought on juvenile delinquency. Other entertainers of the evening were Mary Belle Koenig, who did an impersonation of a Russian opera singer, and Harvey Mason, who proved his magical powers through his numerous tricks. The lettermen and tri-football captains of the year were announced. This memorable evening was ended with a dance. S. girls participated in volleyball, softball and tennis at the Interscholastic League Meet of 1951. They placed in two of these three sports. The softball team, composed of freshman, sophomore, and junior girls, placed at the meet. Their first game, played with Crosby, proved to be victorious. The Liberty team was then defeated by Hardin, which gave them a third-place rating. The volleyball team, which was made up of girls from the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes, was defeated in the first game and did not place in the meet. Top honors were taken by the tennis team which was coached by Mr. Harlan.
