Twenty new pupils entered the school room for the first time to start the long ex- perience which awaited them. Our first grade teacher was Miss Bernice Raber. Our other teachers Were' Mrs Esther Roe, second: Miss Mary Mendenhall, third, Miss Mildred Gavin, fourth, Max Boltin, first half of the fifth grade, and Miss Mae McCarty, second half of the fifth and all of the sixth. Mr. 1-larry Coolman was our teacher for the maj- ority of the subjects in the seventh and eighth grades. The class of 23 members entered the Liberty Cen- ter High School doors to become the Freshman class. This was in September of 1945. Our presi- dent was Roger Zoll. The other class members were, Darwin Markley, lohn Noe, Kent Craig, Bob Poul- son, Ioan Huffman, Phyllis Moore, lim Penrod, Har- old W. Ellett, Roger Highlen, Vera Mae Oswalt Ioyce Fryback, lim Mounsey, Edmund Burns, Max Overmire, Gene Wolf, loan Lydy, Mary Turner, Bill Gaiser, loe Clarke, Harold Williams, Marjorie Brad- leyfand Opa Faye Collins. Of this group nine were of the original class of 1937-1938. Mary Ellis was our sponsor. The next year we lost Max Overmire, Gene Wolf, loan Lydy, Mary Turner, Harold Williams, and Marjorie Bradley. ln the middle of the year Ioe Clarke left us and Carl Noland moved in. Luc- ille lvins also joined the class. The class president was Darwin Markley. The business this year was the purchasing of our rings from Terryberry Co., of Grand Rapids, Mich- igan. We sold schedule pencils and booster hats. Page Eleven Our sponsor was Eldon Aldred. As the year of 47-48 rolled around we had the same number of members as the previous year. Darwin Markley was again elected as president. The other officers were: vice presi- dent, Bob Poulson, and loanne Huffman, Sec. and Treas. The class had more business than ever before. We were in charge of the school paper called The Liberty Bell. Our faculty advisor was Amy Zimmerman. We were in charge of concessions at all ballgames. Also we presented That Crazy Smith Family as our first class play. We picked our class motto, color, and flower. As we entered the Senior year we had lost one member, Opa Faye Collins. This was a final stage of our high school education. Dar- win Markley was President, Bob Poulson, Vice President, Phyllis Moore, Secretary, and Vir- ginia Stroud, Treasurer. We put on the play Tree Points lnn, the last semester, and had three bake sales throughout the year to help pay for our trip to Washington, D. C., at the end of the year. fs Cf X X X, of ,fm Ira Robert Poulson Class Vice-Pres. 3, 4: Basketball 3, 4: Softball 3, 43 Track 33 Liberty Bell Staff 3, 41 Class Play 3. C. H. S. l, joanne Huffman, having been a vocalist for a national network in New York City, am starting my first concert tour to the west coast. Traveling with me is Phyllis Moore, noted pianist. She has been my accompanist for several years. While Waiting for our plane at LaGuardia Field, l bought a newspaper and noticed a picture of an old classmate, Darwin Markley, on the front page. He is now a noted surgeon, who just returned from Europe, after successsfully performing a Very rare operation. We then boarded the airliner and nearly fainted, for who should We see on the same plane, but Kent Craig, a member of the l949 graduating class. Kent is now playing baseball with the New York Yankees. As we were going in the same direction, we de- cided to stop in our home town to see some of our graduating class. We were wondering who the good-looking pilot was and received a shock to learn upon landing in Washington, D. C., that it was none other than Roger Highlen. He received his commercial lic- jense after spending three years in the Army Air Force. As Congress was in session, we decided to at- tend. Upon entering, we heard a familiar voice, that of Edmund Burns. He was elected to the House of Representatives just this year. Of course, back in government class, he always did like to argue. We returned to the airport, only to learn that our plane was late due to motor trouble. However, the efficient mechanics soon remedied this. We were surprised to see jim Mounsey working on it. He is now head mechanic at the airport. Continuing our journey, we flew to the Bluffton- Wells County airport and began looking up some of our classmates. We stopped in the old high school hangout, Pry- back's, and there was Mrs. Ralph Smith, formerly Ioyce Eryback, who is now owner of the store. Oh yes, she has four little Smiths to help her, too. We inquired of Lucille lvins and it seems that she surprised us all. Lucille, who was never interested in boys, was married just one year after we left L.C. H. S. She and her husband now reside on their 260-acre farm in Liberty township, with their two children. Proceeding to Liberty Center, we dropped in to visit our old L. C. H. S. But now there is a modern new school building with built-in gymnasium an swimming pool. Bill Cfaiser graduated from Purdue University c a Civil Engineer, and the building of the net school house was under his supervision. The school term has now been extended to nin months, so we went upstairs to find Mr. Biberstine our senior sponsor, still teaching history and got ernment. While at school We glanced at a letter with familiar name on it, from a large sporting good concern in Chicago. Carl Noland now owns a Chai of stores, however he is located in the main offic in Chicago. We bumped into john Noe, as he stopped to vis on his way up north. john was a mailman for fiv years, when he met and married a millionaire. H spends his winters in Florida, and summers in Car ada on her money. We heard that a classmate was to be in the 50K mile speedway race at Indianapolis, so we Went t find out. Sure enough, there was Iim Penrod, ou school days daredevil, leading the race. Believe 1 or not, he won first place! We finally proceeded on our trip and stopped i Chicago for something to eat. Noticing the labe Ellett's Super Holsteins , on some dairy product: we looked a little closer. lt was the label of Harolf Ellett, who now owns a group of large dairy farm in Wisconsin. The Holstein business really seem to be' good. Our next stop was in Reno, Nevada, where W met an old friend, Bob Poulson. He invited us t visit his large gambling casino and night club. B the way, gambling is legal in Reno, and Bob hap pens to be very rich. We always thought tha pool might lead to something bigger. Continuing on to California, we heard that a nc tional majorette contest had been conducted i: Hollywood. The new champion is none other tha: Virginia Stroud, our high school twirler. Our last stop of the trip was at the M. G. M. Pic ture Studios, where we watched a new movi being filmed. We saw several girls swarming around the stai and upon getting a closer look, we remembered tht handsome face of Roger Zoll. Our senior Hglamou boy has finally reached fame. With our tiresome, but interesting trip completec maybe we shall stay awhile and take it easy. Wonder what ten more years will foretell? The name of it was A Ready Made Family by I. Tobias. Here's the situation. Agnes Martyn, a widow, while vacationing meets an old sweetheart, Henry Turner, a widower, and they become engaged. Neither tells the other of the chil- dren at home, three in one household, and two in the other, The youngsters, having heard of the big surprise and not feeling any too good about it, plan to upset the matrimonial apple cart by acting their worst before their prospective step-parents. One has tits, an- other talks baby talk, and the third plays the role of a holy terror. Samrriie becomes a klep- tomaniac, and to top matters oll, Doris keeps harping on her operation. Finally the kids are ready to accept their new parents after they had come so near breaking Agnes and Henry apart. Page Thirty-Three S' Am Jaya! CHORUS During the year the chorus had several ace tivities. Among those were: teas, P.T.A, meet- ings, County Festival, Baccalaureate, and a minstrel. The most important event was the rninstrel. We realize how wonderful our teachers have been. Upon leaving the school, dear teachers and students We leave our memories, good and well. And from each senior of '49, We have only to say Farewell. It has saddened our hearts, this word, Farewell, As our time has come to part. But the joy and happiness linger still, Way clown deep in each heart.
