Turning two potentially disas- trous volleyball games into victories, the Seniors went on to claim first place in virtually every other event of the day. Highlighting the afternoon was a closely fought softball ganie featuring the fantas- tic pitching of Jeff Strike 'ern Out Hilty, who incidently is Writing this article. Rounding out the games, a banquet was thrown in honor of the victors. During the meal, golfing great Torn Jones was asked his opinion of the day's activities. After a nioment's thought, he replied casually, Oh, about par for the course. Junior-Senior Day By Junior Steve Cranier Arrghl They said it couldn't be done, and yet the Seniors beat us. What can we do now? Protest ----- that' s what! Now don't get us wrong---we're not saying that the honorable Seniors would Cheat or stoop to any foul nieans to win---no we're not say- ing that. The thenfie was Po- lynesian Night. The school auditorium was beauti- fully decorated. The first thing that caught many teachers' and students' attention was a waterfall. They had a surfboard which Mrs. Donna Miller had to try out. Of course she'll say she was put up to it but we all know better. From the palmi trees and na- tive hut to the table decorations, it was obvious the Juniors did the best that could be done. The sophornore servers in their brightly colored outfits served an excellent nieal. For the Post-Prom we went to Lehmann' s Lodge for swimming, putt-putt, bowling, and niany other enjoyable activities. 71 Class Trip Sunday night, May l9, 1968, 38 Seniors em- barked on a five-day journey that will probably be remembered for a long time. An all-night land sometinies Wildj bus ride found the group in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania early the next iriorning. After touring the battlefield there, the bus load traveled to Washington D. C. Re- servations had been niade giving the class Z days and one night to see all of Washington and its surrounding points of interest. Take the Word of one Who's tried ------- it can't be done. Dur- ing this time we saw the Capitol, Arlington Cemetery, Lincoln Memorial, the Srnithsonian Institution and many other places. Arriving at night the city was aglow with millions of lights. Though the Eag- les did not possess a high scoring offensive niachine, they did coniniand a lot of respect throughout the Conference for their hard-hitting and ag- gressive football. The season started off rather well for Liberty -Benton as the Eag- les jumped off to a l-L-O halftinie lead against MCCO1T1b. Gary Harpst provided the spark as he scored both touchdowns. In the second half, I-larpst scored again and the L-B defense finally stopped a lVlcConib ral- ly to preserve a 2.0-l8 win. Van Buren was the next Eagle victim and they proved to be fornii- dable opponents. The Black Knights jurnped off to a 6-O lead and held it well into the third quarter before quarterback Toni Jones went to work. Jones threw a 25-yard scoring strike to Mick Moye in the third period to knot the score and later in the period hit Rick Del-lays for the go-ahead touchdown. The fourth period was scoreless and the Eagles had a l2-6 victory for their second win. Win nunqber 3 of the season canue at the expense of Pandora-Gilboa. This was one ganie that L-B wanted very rnuch to win so we went out and took it. Van Shank proved the scoring punch as he accounted for all l6 of the Eagles points on two touchdowns and two conversions. Shank was equally tough at his defensive cornerback position as he made many tackles. Pandora never threatened seriously and L-B had a l6-O shut- out. Any hope of an undefeated season was washed down the drain the next week at Vanlue. The Wildcats surprised the Eagles and came off with a 13-6 victory. Van Shank again scored L-B's only points. Cory-Rawson was Liberty-Benton's next opponent and the Eagles were again on the short end 2-l-O. The Eagles went into this game with one thought in mind and that was showing Cory that we could play foot- ball. This we did. The L-B defense stopped the Hornets three tinies inside the 5-yard line, once when they had a first and goal at the one yard line. At the end of three quarters the score was 2-O in favor of C-R. But Cory-Rawson's platooning finally wore down the Eagles. The Eagles continued to take their lumps the following week as they lost a tough l2.-6 decision to Arcadia. Roger Patterson scored for the Eagles. 92 L-B found the Winning trail again as they downed Hardin Northern. The Polar Bears scoredfirst but Gary I-Iarpst tied the score on a spec- tacular 7O yard run. l-larpst put the Eagles ahead by running the con- version. ln the fourth quarter Roger Patterson put the icing on the cake as he pulled over the second L-B touchdown to make the final score l4-6. The Eagles assured themselves of a winning season the next Week as they trounced Leipsic l7-6. Rick Del-lays started the action with a 2.5 yard scoring jaunt in the first quarter and then running the conver- sion. Later in the period Gary I-larpst Went lO yards for the Eagles second touchdown. Roger Patterson turned kicking specialist in the second quarter as he kicked a field goal to give the Eagles a 17-O half- time lead. Leipsic managed to score in the third quarter and the final score was L-B 17, Leipsic 6. The weather for the final game was terrible to say the least. The field was completely saturated but this did not stop a deternnined Rog- er Patterson. The fullback accounted for all of the Eagles' points as he ambled 38 yards in the first quarter, four yards in the third and scored both conversions to give the Eagles a 16-6 victory over Arling- ton and a very respectable season. Although no one from Liberty was selected for the first team All- Gonference, this can be explained that Liberty-Benton was a team in the truest sense of the Word. The scoring was evenly distributed with Gary Harpst scoring 32. points, Roger Patterson Z5 points and Van Shank ZZ points. Terry Cramer, Mark Hanover, Gary I-Iarpst and Rog er Patterson were selected for the second team All-Conference. Honor able Mention selections included Van Shank, Tom Jones and Rick De- I-lays. The Eagles recorded '7 wins, l second andlthird in 9 meets, along with a 4th place at the Lakota Relays, 4th place at the Blanchard Valley Conference Meet and oth place at the District Meet. Several records were broken along the way. Tom Lloyd set new marks in the high and low hurdles, Terry Cramer in the shot and discus Joe Adams and Rick Del-lays in the pole Vault, Mark Powell lowered his mile record and set a record in the 2. mile, Phil Bolen shattered the record in the long jump with a leap of 20' lO and set a new district record with a jump of 20' 3 lf2 . Mark Powell, Terry Cramer, Tom Jones, and Phil Bolen qualified at District for the Regionals. Phil Bolen placed 31-d and qualified for State. Liberty-Benton was third in the Hancock County Meet which was held at Liberty after a lapse of two years and the Eagles were 5th in the Blanchard Valley Conference and 6th in the Findlay District Meet out of 22 schools entered. Terry Cramer scored first in the shot and discus to earn the right to proceed to the Regional.
