CLASS HISTCRY In 1952-53 our class history began. Eleven Freshmen came from Benton Ridge to join Libertys' sixteen. This gave us the grand total of twenty-seven. We elected the following officers: Pres.-Charles Parkins, Vice Pres.-Gloria Bartchlett, Sec.-Treas.-Miriam Kidd, Student Council-Judy Grose and Kent Brannan. Mr. Abbott was our home room teacher. We had much fun this year. We decorated for May Day also. This year Jean Serals, Bob Perez, Earl Price and Carol Land left us. Jan- et Weissling and Sally Stump came from Findlay to join us. We started our Sophomore year wisely by electing the following officers: Pres.-Charles Parkins, Vice Pres. Joan Arras, Sec.-Helen Smith, Treas.-Roger Zoll, Student Council-Betty Moorhead and Jack Ridge. Mr. Russel was our home room teacher. We had a lot of fun this year and we decorated for Bac- calaurate. Phoebe Van Cleve and Barbara Cramer left us this year. Earlene Hing- son , Shirley Heiserman and John Gratton came to join us this year. We entered our Junior year very excited, realizing that we would begin earning money for our Senior class trip. We elected the following oficers: Pres.-Sue Conaway, Vice Pres.-Dean Wiler, Sec.-Helen Smith, Treas.-Martha Orwick, Student Council-Joan Arras and Bob Bryan. Mrs. Gongwer was our home room teacher. Mary Alice Bish and John Gratton left us this year. This year we had a hayride, bake sale, square dance, sold cards, sold concessions at the basketball games and had many other money making pro- jects. To climax our year we gave a prom for the Senior class. The theme was Starlight We were very joyous as we entered our Senior year. It must have been because it was our last year. Our co-sponsors this year were Mrs. Solt and Mr. Howard. Sue Conaway was elected Pres., Jack Ridge-Vice President, BettyMoor- head-Sec. ,Helen Smith-Treas., Judy Grose and Roger Zoll-Student Council. We made a lot of money this year by various means. Janet Weissling withdrew and Janet Frontz joined us. Our twelve years of school ended with the Baccalaurate and Commence- ment May 13. We left for our trip to Washington and New York May 20. Although our outward appearance is that we are glad to be out of school, next fall many of us will wish we were back at Good Old Liberty- Benton High. CLASS PROPHECY In 1966 as State Inspector of Schools, I walked into a school, and to my surprise, who was there, but most of the graduate class of 1956. As I walked into the superintendent's office, whom did I spy but Joan Arras as his private secretary. Next I made a tour of the grades, stopping first at the first grade, where Sue Conaway was teaching. Next I went to the fourth grade room and saw Connie Castello explaining the fundamentals of spelling. Then on to the sixth grade room where we find Martha Orwick leading the group of children in song. Next I heard a terrific blast on a Whistle and who was there, but Arlene Karhoff refereeing a game of bas- ketball. I then proceeded up the stairs to the high school, and went to the Home Ec. room and found that Earlene Hingson had taken over this de- partment. Then I detected a terrible odor and knew it couldn't be coming from the Home Ec. room so I went to the Chemistry Lab where I found Helen Smith and her class preparing hydrogen chloride gas. I then traveled with great haste to the typing room where I found Betty Moorhead teach- ing Commercial subjects. Then I heard beautiful piano music. I went to the music room to find Dean Wiler at the piano going through some of his Girls' Chorus numbers. Dean told me his old friend, Roger Zoll, was teach- ing History in the next room so I traveled over to see him. After I talked to Roger I went to the Ag. Room and saw John Manges was teaching his boys how to test milk. The Art Studio was right across the hall so I went over to see Janet Frontz teaching her students how to sketch. Then I spied a new addition to the school, it was the electronic room and Lyle Van Meter was helping his students to construct a television set. Next door to his room was the Math room Where Jack Ridge was giving his students their Geometry lesson. After visiting the teachers in their rooms we had a teachers' meeting in the assembly room. During this friendly discussion we talked about what the rest of their classmates were doing. Bob Bryan is now an Airplane pilot with the United States Air Force. Judy Grose is patiently sitting at home waiting for Bob. Gloria Bartchlett is now manager of the County Home. Donna Allen has opened a Children's Home. It is very successful. Martha Dukes is a very successful secretary in Chicago. Mary Dukes is now man- ager of Macy's in New York. Shirley Heiserman is a race car driver, and travels all over the country. Charles Parkins is now Top Sergeant in the National Guard. Miriam Kidd is very satisfied in the Waves. Kent Brannan is now Business Manager of the Ohio Oil Company. The Liberty-Benton Homecoming was held October 31. Our opponents, Mt. Blanchard, won the game, 46 to 0. The Queen, Helen Smith ,was crown- ed before the game by Co-Captain Kent Brannan. Preceeding the crowning, the Queen and her Court circled the field and the Queen stopped to say a few words of welcome before proceeding to her throne. The Student Council and the Senior Class co-sponsored a banquet sup- per before the game. After the game, the Senior Class held a Homecoming Dance. From the standpoint of sportsmanship, this season's football team can be considered a much better success than from the standpoint of wins and losses. As long as the boys have good sportsmanship and a desire to win, they will always be rewarded by knowing' that they have done their best even though their games aren't in the win column. We, the class of 56 believe that the boys will do better next year. We elected Jack Ridge and Kent Brennan co-captains this year. Those boys leaving' the squad this year are: Charles Parkins, Bob Bryan, Dean Wiler, Kent Brannan, Jack Ridge, and Roger Zoll. Compliments of C. E. STANDING: Manager Jerry Cramer, Herb Stump, Dan Vermillion, Bill Oldham, Gary Heidlebaugh, Wayne Orwick, Mr. Moore. The Varsity ended the 1955-56 basketball season with an 8 win 11 loss record. This record was most commendable considering the many obstacles the team had to overcome. Lack of over-all height and playing on a small court were the main obstacles. The statistics show the Varsity in regular season outscored the op- ponent by 1 point, 910-909. This gave the Varsity a 50.5 points per game average, both offensively and defensively. In the foul shooting department we had a 56 92 average and the op- ponent 51'Z. In field shooting we had a 28 7- average to the opponents 2972. The thing the boys can be proud of this season was their defensive average of 50.5 per game, a forgotten aspect of the game today. One of the highlights of the season was the 68-56 win over Vaughnsville in which the squad exhibited a great amount of drive and hustle. He scored 163 points for the season. i ROGER ZOLL, Sr. Roger, a senior, playing one yea Varsity ball was a great help to team. REX CRAMER, Jr. Rex playing his 2nd year of Varsity ball and still one to go was a great inspirational help to the squad. He ended the season top scorer with 223 points and foul shooting trophy win- ner with a percentage of 73. TOM HEIDLEBAUGH, Fr. The reserves, with 3 Juniors, 2 Sophomores, and 1 Freshman forming the nucleus of the team compiled a 9 win, 7 loss record. This was very good in that most of the teams they played were older, especially in the faculty game. Team status shows that the reserves had a 48 per game of- fensive average while holding the opponents to 38 per game. The reserves hit on 31117 of its field shots and 531 of its foul attempts. Top scorer on the squad was big Bill Oldham with 189 points. He was followed by Wayne Orwick, 1103 Gary Heidlebaugh, 108: Herb Stump, 104, and Ronald Huys- man, 95. The reserves foul shooting trophy Went to Gordon Fisher who, while playing reserves, compiled 11-17 for a 6576 average. Highlight of the season was the 76-38 win over the Van Buren spares.
