Now they are seniors. Their last year in L. H. S. is coming to a close. All the plays, assemblies, dances, and ball games that they have taken for granted have suddenly reacheda climax. They started the year by electing Jack Dykes as their president with Larry Childers, Pat King, Betty Holmes, Pat Carpenter, and Kathy French to fill the various other offices. Soon the year was well under way and they presented The Glass Menagerie as their senior class play. In November the Mirage staff held electiomor the first Mirage queen and they chose Pat Carpenter, Ann Kretzmeier, and Linda Larrabee to represent their class. Before they realized the Christmas season had arrived, they found themselves decorating the first floor with a huge Christmas tree with blue lights. ln January they chose their commencement announcements and February 20th brought the basketball homecoming game with Hugoton. They chose Jan King and Kathy French as their candidates for basketball queen. When April blew in, they spent hours preparing to entertain the faculty and junior class with a fun-filled evening in the Sewers of Paris. The final rush came in May. The seniors were entertained at the annual banquet and prom given by the juniors. Then came work day, skip day, hush day, final examinations, baccalau- reate, and class day. Finally, on May 26, they walked across Rindom Hall stage and received their diplomas. The seniors looked to their sponsors Mr. Freeman, Mr. Shupe, Miss Jefferson, Mrs. Varah, Mr. Sexton, and Miss Humphrey for assistance many times throughout the year. Gneahmen 'lam Redakm Tube When The Ffeshlesf ' CS The upperclassmen fondly call the members of the freshman class, entered the halls of L.H.S. this year it seemed as if they had no trouble at all finding their way to class. At least in a few days there were no more 'lost greens ' to lead to a hard-to-find Latin or algebra room. The purpose of their first class meeting was to elect officers to lead them through the year. Jim Madden became president of the class of 62, and to assist him they elected Phillip Light, vice-president, Janet Powell, secretary-treasurer, and Don Keating, historian. Also for the first time they were allowed to have representatives to the senior high student councils For this honor they picked Larry Swafford and Carol Garoutte. While actually still a part of junior high, i they have made a very good start on their record of memories of L.H.S. Their success has certainly been helped by their teacher-sponsors: Mrs. Penny, Mr. Jantz, Mr. Clagg, Mr. Cleavenger, Miss Schirmer Mrs. Stephens, and Mr. Walker. 44 f 4' 73 Q L iiQsg'f f, Q v'1 1 W , if v at M, in W R 5 'Sue f , f it 5 'A - v 751 I rg, ig? They were welcomed by Doug Pomeroy, iunior class president, and the response was given by Bob Lea, senior class president. There were bits of advice given by Mr. Malin and Mr. Forker to the seniors who would soon be graduating. Then some humorous Rendezvous Gossip was given by Tom Ward. After a luscious meal of Starfish Fillet, Sharon Kopke sang Stardust and Pat King, Pat Patrick, and Kathy French sang When Stars Fall on Liberal High. REDSKINS RUN OVER PRATT 25-6 The Redskins squashed the visiting Greenbacks 25-6 in retaliation for an opening game defeat last year at Pratt. A fluke event was the reason Pratt was able to score. Russell booted the ball and it wa was covered but somehow everyone forgot to touch it. While the crowd just stood around waiting for something to happen, Fred Hamilton of Pratt snatched the ovoid and trotted 26 yards to a touchdown. One of the many services rendered by the Girl Reserves was the book ex- change which was conducted for the benefit of senior high students during the first week of school. As the Girl Reserves' contribution to the Community Christmas Basket project, they collected food, toys, and clothing in addition to making a cash contribution. Mystery and surprise ruled for a few days before Christmas when peanut- pals each day exchanged small surprise packages. At a Christmas party the final day, the identity of the peanut-pal was revealed. Two outstanding speakers of the year were Mrs. H. C. Franklin who had recently toured Russia and Reverend R.W.O. Knowles who discussed the pro- blems ancl important decisions which must be made by teenagers. A very im- pressive candle-lighting recognition service was held for thirty-two girls who had expressed a desire to share in the work of the Girl Reserves. They work hard on three to eight hour shifts, but there is CI certain amount of merriment on the scene whenever a group of girls gets together. Debatena finalqye Education The debate squad, under the direction of Edward J. Gordon, completed a very successful season debating the question, Resolved: That the United States Should Adopt the Essential Features of the British System of Education. During the year they traveled approximately 2500 miles, met twenty-eight schools and participated in fifty-four rounds of debate. Four members of the group, Linda Pifer, Harold LaFavor, Cinda Lou Wilson, and Vickie Doll received letters for the year's work. Throughout the year the debaters were kept on their toes by constantly doing research on their topic, by giving practice debates to various classes, and by attending the demonstration debate clinic at Fort Hays State College in Hays. During the season they also participated in invitational tournaments at South- western College in Winfield, Derby, Garden City, and Meade high schools, and finally the District Tournament at Fort Hays State College. With the experience they have gained this year, they are looking forward to even more successful seasons in the future. 99 Nb ,ar ,w 'iv K iw V 2 , 4' in i All Q 'iii vga, A is IQVQQQM Y-L 4.110 'Y 5 ' ,195 ,f .
