SEHIUHS E Treasurer Barbara Law Secretary Donna Bryan Vrce Presrdent Reba Shank Presrdenr Mrlan Hart In the autumn of 1945 the class of '51 entered L1beral H1 h School as seventh grad ers They were t e lar est class 1f not the most rmportant They e ected as the1r pres 1dent Reba Shank After the hot and wrndy summer vacatron they returnedto school as seasoned fand sun burned elghth graders Thrs year they elected B111 Holt as pres1 dent and Dee Ann Dltch as ca.nd1date for foot ball queen In the1r freshman year they d1st1ngu1shed themselves by carryrng out a grass plantlng project on the campus of L H S Th1s 1dea was suggested by Wendell Smotherman In thelr frrst year rn semor h1gh as so ph1st1cated sophomores they elected B111 Holt as pres1dent Bobby Jean Cole was the candr datelfor football queen but she lost to an older r1va the class butby sellmg magazmes operat1n the concessrons stand at football games levymg class dues they rarsed enough money to honor the semors wrth a Junror semor ban quet and prom whose theme carrled out ln blue and srlver was H1tch Your Wagon to a Star Memb e r s of the Jumor class dzsplayed therr dramatrc ab111ty rn the play Fog Island a modern mystery drama Mxlan Hart was the pres1dent durrng thxs busy year At last the class frnal year 1n L H S arrrved At the beg1nn1ng of the year the class elected as pres1dent you guessed lt M1lan Hart Football was the frrst b1 sports event of the school year andbasketba land track pro v1ded excxtement too The class of '51 was the lastgraduatrng class to watch contests be tween s c hools of the Crm Ark League be cause f1Ve members of 1tW1thdreW le avrng Llberal and Garden C1ty w1th no league at all Sports were rmportant th1s year but there were of course many other thlngs rn wh1ch the semors took part Dur1ng the Chrrstmas season they decorated the frrstfloor hall of the school as has become a trad1t1on 1n L H S On February 15 the semor and Junror g1rls were enterta1ned at the annual Cottey Tea atwhrch chapters F A and A P of P E O were hostesses Dr Blanche Dow presrdent of Cottey College spoke to the glrls That same evemng the senlor gurls attend edad1nnerg1venb the A A U W Dr Dow was the speaker t at evemng also In late February four sen1ors Delores Grlffln Barbara Law Hazel Gr abeel and Wrlda Naylor became candrdates for basket ball queen Wllda was the one who was chosen to be queenbyballotof the four upper classes March 7 saw all the semors 1ndustr1ously L1bera1 Money earned rn thrs manner went mto the class fund to help cover the multltude of expenses thatconfronts every semor class Frlday Aprll 13 brought the presentatlon of the class play, another money rarsrng proj e c t Desprte the supposedly unlucky day the play Seventeenth Summer, was a success One day found the semors strangely quret No 1twasn't brought about by any great tra edy Itwas only Hush Day Anyone who spo e had to pa a frne The srlence was probably very rest ul to the teachers Afrnal rush of act1v1t1es marked the month of May Frrst the jumor semor prom then exams class day and Baccalaureate and fmally on May 25 a s olemn processxon of s en1or s g1rls rn wh1te ca s and gowns and boys 1n w1ne colored ones 1led mto the old audrtonum to the strams of Pomp and C1r curnstance to ICCCIVC therr d1 lomas, wh1ch represented not only the knowledge they had ga1ned but also all the happy years they had spent rn L H S 12 X .
