Stepping Back... Arrayed for Victory LE YTE GULF History.- Naming the Navy's ninth Ticonderoga Class Cruiser LEYTE GULF commemorates the largest naval battle in modem warfare. Fought between 23 and 26 October 1944 in the Philippines, this battle virtually ending the Japanese N avy's capacity to fight as an organized force The battle marked the end of centuries of naval warfare tradition in that is was the last sea battle between forces employing battleships. lt also marked he last time surface ships employed the classic maneuver of Crossing the T when the Japanese ships attempted to enter the gulf through the Surgao Strait early on 23 October. The battle showcased three separate, major engagements. The Battle of Suri gao Straits, The Battle of Samar Island, and The Battle of Cape Engano. Called the last of the great sea battles, the Battle of Leyte Gulf used every known weapon of naval war, except mines, and in terms of sheer destruction, the battle has no rival in naval history. The battle was noteworthy in another sense, in that it saw the lst kamikaze attacks on 23 October, five planes swooped down upon escort carriers on the U.S. Seventh Fleet. This incident is credited as the forerunner of modem cruise missiles employment, and thus, the genesis of the AEGIS Weapon System. No previous U.S. Navy Ship has bome this name, although three prior Navy ships carried the name 'Leyte' to sea. Keel laid March 18, 1985. Christened Leyte Gulf In 1986. I DECK DN isi9w lst Divisiong lst to Lead, lst to Succeed First Division, otherwise known as Deck Division was one of the first divisions known in the Navy. During the 200812009 Deployment First Division played a crucial part in conducting Small Boat Training with the Cape Verde and Congolese Navies. By training these navies how to operate, drive and maintain a RHIB in order to keep it in top performance, the Boatswainis Mates and Seamen in First Division contributed to the success of LEYTE GULF participation for the African Partnership Station in the SIXTH FLEET. Besides the training for and execution of Special Evolutions, our major responsibility lies in the maintenance of the ship. By keeping the decks clean of dirt and painting the hull of the ship on a regular basis, we ensured the ship's immaculate appearance during receptions in Congo, Senegal and Dakar and during the festivities for the 100th anniversary of the Great White Fleet in Messina!Sicily. During normal underway steaming we provide and train the majority of the Deck Watchstanders, such as Boatswain's Mate of the Watch, Helmsman and Forward and Aft Lookouts. Our knowledge and motivation are key factors for the shipls safety and battle readiness. Beside the daily routine and Special Evolutions Deck Division personnel has to be flexible and innovative in n solving even the most unexpected tasks. Being a member of a division that faces all these challenges every day makes you realize that as individuals we won't be able to make that happen. But working as a team and looking out for each other allow us to accomplish everything - BRING IT ON! Pursuing piracy on both coasts of Africa, conducting a search and rescue operation in Cape Verde, and maintaining fleet surface awareness, the Operational Specialists onboard knew exactly what to do and supported the ship in every station.
