‘Teachers eachers often discover 1h that the quietest and the most innocent student in the classroom can be a great master of creativity. A stu- dent often cherishes a small hope that if he can imagina- tively explain why his home- work is not evident, perhaps the teacher will let him off with merely a muttered reprimand (“philistine!’’). Teachers know all too well the long list of ge- neric excuses, such as: “Would you believe it? | ate the wrong lunch! | could’ve sworn we ate first lunch, hon- estly!”’ By senior year, most stu- dents have several favorite teachers who are also good friends and advisors. These teachers are asked to do the time-consuming job of writing college recommendations, hopefully with no reference to the student’s chronic tardi- ness to all A Block classes. ‘No, really, Mr. Welch. The little white ones you get to move twice for every one time that the black ones do. Honest.” 12
