Lexington 1976 is a portrayal of the change occurring around us, particularly in our high school. It represents the diversity and the unity which exists among the students and faculty. We present this yearbook with the hope that we might capture at least one memory that you might otherwise have forgotten. While the revolution is no longer fought with cannons or mus- kets, the shot heard ’round the world still echoes today. Dr. Clune, our new principal, is one of the newest changes in our school. tH) It wasn’t too long ago that Stu- dent Life was as carefully struc- tured as academic life. Partici- pation in programs’ which “guided” free time was expected from everyone. These structures in school life have changed through the years. Programs which extend school lessons are still offered, but participation is left up to the individual. Student Life is everywhere. It’s found in town, on the buses, and under the covered corridors all day long. Features on Creatures How many times this year have you noticed the popularity of painters’ pants? How many times have you had to fight for a tennis court? How many of your friends cut their hair either for individ- uality or conformity? Look again for the numbers are growing. Just when did Army surplus invade the school? When did Adidas leave the track to bring us com- fort and people exchange their six — inch platforms for “the way we were meant to walk” shoes? And when were the vibrant colors of fall muted by the shades of our own raingear? The answers are found in the halls, parking lots, classrooms, and fields of our campus. Years from now, these ‘“‘fads” will seem almost as ridiculous to us as fish — swallowing and bobby socks. They are, however, an important part of our year, and should always be remembered. How many times did it take you to pass your drivers test? Lord Balfour reigns Chopped tops Painters pants are popular... ... but jeans are still number one. Quick words in the quad A small snack en route to class I’ve got it next! 14 Three Minute Visits The bell rings. Once we manage to fight our way out of the units, we’re off. For some, the four minutes between classes are spent in a mad quarter mile dash from J100 to the eastern boondocks of D House. The break gives others a chance to grab a quick snack en route to ANOTHER agonizing hour or a battle for the one pay phone that IS working. While cramming for tests and finishing homework are popular ways of spending these valuable min- utes, most of us just talk with the friends we haven’t seen for at least forty-five minutes. 15 16 A serenading sire — Robbie Segal One of our more constructive pastimes — David Works, Joe Schultz, and Bill McKenney CHOW TIME — BUT WHO JUST EATS? Look out, Julia Child, your efforts are wasted on us. No one here bothers to chew food twenty-five times, (Chew the fat, maybe, food, Never!) While a few manage to escape uptown for some REAL food, the remaining brownbaggers wait in endless lines for pot luck. We eat, sure, but we do that all day. When else but at lunch can a group gather for an impromptu game of football or frisbee? Where else but in the lunchrooms is the noise level out- done by nothing short of WLEX or the bell’s echo in the curved upstairs corridor? Socializing, study- ing, sunbathing, sleeping ... Lunch? AFTER THE BELL For those who didn’t scramble to work or to catch a bus home, LHS was a mecca of assorted activity. The memory of a sometimes dreary day faded as warm-ups began, clubs came to order, and rehears- als got down to business. Most of us managed to sleep through 6-8 weeks of Driver’s Education (though few were able to “observe” a nervous lear- ner from the back seat without some jittery feel- ings). Many a day, bagged students were spotted “tidying-up” the campus. The main hall was con- stantly lined with various bake sales and fund raising projects. It was after school that com- mittees met to create “innovative” publicity (or propaganda) for the upcoming rallies, trips, din- ners, dances and gym activities. It was after the bell that meetings tried to reorganize our school and our lives. And it was after the bell that we shed the label “students” and became people. 19 Relaxing bodies rejuvenate their energy supply The career center is always well stocked with forms to fill out SERN gD a Battlefield? At a number of critial stages, the maturing process of our class has been interrupted by major alterations of school policy, and, as a result, our class has never really had the chance to develop fully as a unit. The most serious of these changes was the transfer of the ninth grade from the senior to the junior high level. Five years ago, most of us were looking foward to the freedom and opportunity found at the senior high school. Fantastic tales of various exploits at the high school had filtered down to our level, and we were eager to find out for ourselves what these stories were all about. Then, at the end of eighth grade, it was announced that we would have to wait another year to enter that Utopia which had eluded us for so long. This decree did more than keep our class out of trouble for another year. On the eve of the full unification of the Class of ’76, we discovered that our group would be divided further still. Over three quar- ters of a thousand students, comprising the largest class in Lexington’s history, were sectioned between three schools, rendering the ninth grade a collection of broken circles of friends. The small, exclusive cliques we had defensively formed in ninth grade stayed intact when we entered the high school. Travel between these cliques was minimal, and class spirit rapidly became a word with- out a meaning. To compound this problem, a ban on dances was issued early in our stay at LHS, thwarting any attempts on the part of the Class Council to unify our diverse group. This year, however, changes have begun to happen. Slowly, the once impenetrable walls between us start- ed to disappear, and inter-group travel has become increasingly popular. Students are now more open than ever before, and the social situation is improving daily. The Class Council has even chosen the re- unification of the Senior Class as its task for the year. The class of 1976 has finally come alive. Although we are already in the closing days of our final year at Lexington High, we now know that we have the strength to pull ourselves together as a class, and in the future, function as more mature and vital mem- bers of society. Above all, we have the hope for more meaningful lives in the new responsibilities which await us. Dave Campbell CLASS OF ‘76 ANN ROBERTS EMILY J. KENNEY DEBORAH B. ABEL SUE ABKOWITZ ELIZABETH N.
