We all share a common experience. Going to Lexington High binds us as one, forming the basis upon which we develop individual ideas, interests, and goals. The directions we choose are different, we are individuals. But, the nature of what we do is the same. We accept challenges, we find escape, we seek to learn, we become involved. ORCHESTRA Orchestra—The Greater Lexington High School wind ensemble, plus strings, started the year off with a bang: two “show-off” concerts to Muzzey and Diamond. What could have turned off those poor junior high kids more than hearing us play? But heedless of our warnings, Mr. Eleftherakis worked the poor violinists in back of the virtuoso seconds into shape for a brilliant Messiah concert in December. Thank goodness the chorus drowned us out. And despite the perfect pitch of the omnipotent oboes, Mr. Didomenico (the headstrong) took over and rehearsed us into a very good concert in February. Actually, we only seemed good because the combined Jr. High Or- chestras played before us. The stern discipline of our fearless Concert mistress was admirable—but everybody worked hard and had fun! 49 SENIOR PLAY 50 Tom Jones ... Teamwork and Let’s go! were just a few of the words ringing the girls’ ears during every game. Outstanding skills, good sportsmanship and the will to win, combined with Miss Leavitt’s coaching, helped to make this season a good one. Though the season began slowly for the team, they ended in glorious victories. When the team clicked, they were unbeat- able. Advisor Neil Gray 105 tow aly LEXINGTON 1970— a completely unique experience 108 It is the special directions we take that make our school unique. Lexington High is not necessarily better, nor worse than most other schools; but it is DIFFERENT— different because of the particular things we choose to do. In the following pages, we have attempted to illustrate how the students at Lexington High express themselves by becoming involved. On October 15, thousands of students expressed their opposition to the war in Vietnam. Lexington was host to Governor Seargent, as well as many other distinguished speakers. The increasing enrollment at L.H.S. necessitated a re- evaluation of the unit system. For this purpose, a com- mittee of students and faculty was appointed, headed by Nate Todaro. 109 For two weeks in September, Ellen Degan and David Drake, visited our sister city of Dalores Hidalgo. Lexington was host to two A.F.S. stu- dents: Saba Gessesse from Ethiopia, and Gino Gomba from Italy. In January, our A.F.S. representative, Jamie Katz, re- turned from his year in New Zealand. 110 This year, Lexington High participated in several cultural exchanges. In July, twenty-one L.H.S. students initiated an exchange with Pueblo, Mexico, when they spent a month living with Mexican families. Li By student demand, Lexington High initiated a Black Studies Course to provide an opportunity for interested students to learn more about that area of our his- tory. In February, the black students presented a program to the school to express their attitude toward the black man’s position and re- lationship to society. One such attempt was Mr. Johnson’s Open Meetings, where students were free to question the Administration’s policies in any area. In March plans were being formulated for a day long Ecology ‘Teach-In to take place in April. 115 Lexington High’s Winter sports teams did exceptionally well this year. Everyone who worked on the book deserves recognition, but there are a few people who deserve special thanks for their end- less hours of work: Bob Kent, Van Harris, Geoff Freitas, Bruce Owens, and Bill Murray. We also ap- preciated the patience and reliability of Stuart’s Photo- finishing Service of Arlington, and the Lexington Min- uteman. It is impossible to imagine where we would be without the kind help of Roswell Farnham of the Wm. J. Keller Inc. Finally, this book is indebted to our Ad- visor, Neil Gray, for all his time and understanding. To all those involved in the creation of this book, thank you.
