David, would you be Polonius, and for Ophelia let’s have. . .” The reading begins and the words stumble, bruised and battered, from contorted mouths into the room, filling it with formidable monotones—all except John, who reads with cautious but effective emotion. The words fade as the last two lines of Hamlet’s soliloquoy rhyme and the scene apologetically ends. “Now, who can tell me what Shakespeare was con- cerned with in this scene?” There is a thoughtful silence. Suddenly lightning flashes, peals of thunder shake the stage, seas part, suns explode and through the maelstrom—a hand is raised.
