GARY MEMORIAL LIBRARY LEXINGTON 73, MASS. Published by the students of Lexington High School Lexington, Massachusetts 37 D7 71 Co-editors — Janet Branch, Carol Woodberry . .. Asst. Editor — here is nothing more important to a school program than the student. Each year the student comes one step closer to finding the individual in himself. While the mind is important as the recipi- ent of knowledge, the hands are equally important as the expression of the individ- ual. An interpretation of what he has learned is found in the work of his hands. They record his thoughts, express his talents, reveal his ambitions, and fashion his creativeness. During each school day hands are at work in every room and in every way demonstrating the experience of learning. Truly these hands will help shape the future of every student and will prove literally the saying, “we hold the future in our hands.” Diana Cole... CHARLES JOHNSON, B.A., Harvard University, M.Ed., Boston University; Administration A successful school program is embodied in the ideas and teaching of the administration. This year Lexington High veered from some routine procedures and experimented with a new method of teaching, the Basic Studies program, and a new plan for the cur- riculum. The plan allows for seven subjects, each meet- ing four periods a week, an effective, concentrated method of learning. The faculty continues to introduce new ideas and concepts to the student, and Lexington’s high rating in the state rewards their efforts. It must be remembered that we spend the greater part of our day in the classroom. Learn- ing is never a dull experience with book fairs, science projec ts, and the numerous opportuni- ties for participation in class. Though the hours are often long and the work hard, we take pride in our final accomplishments. John Souza and Gerald Giroux look over the situation at the National Honor Society Book Fair for tomorrow’s book report. Students listen attentively to Mr. Choate in class, but sometimes it’s just too much at 2:20. 19 laughter to remember Rene No one can be serious all the time, and laughter offers the needed relaxation. There are mem- ories that will be remembered and laughed about many years from now. Practically every production, such as the Operetta or Senior Play, has moments when rehearsals become riotous over some joke in the lines. In class teachers and stu- dents laugh together; at the school’s sports events improvised cheers from the spectators in addition to incidents on the playing area enter- tain everyone. There are other mo- ments at any time or place that we will never forget. “Books, books everywhere and not a book that’s mine!” moans Linda Pow- ers as she searches futilely in the caf- eteria in a rush to get to class. Anyone can make a cake, but only James Hall, Arthur Therrien, and Bob Spidle can clean a stove. Will THIS get the cheerleaders to Concord? 20 Lose a football player? No, only Larry Spidle’s contact lenses. Lexington’s interested spectators watch the girls . . . play a skilled game of Field Hockey. 21 excitement of The queen, Carol Ricci, is crowned by class president Robert Sheridan at the climax of the dance. After weeks of hectic committee meetings and moments of last minute planning, a major event of the year takes place for the seniors, their senior prom. This year under the theme of “Midnight Champagne” 200 couples en- joyed dancing, refreshments, and decorations in a surrounding atmosphere of night-life. Not to be forgotten though, is the added excitement of dinner parties before and after the prom and the traditional highlights of the senior girls’ dance, crowning the queen, and the queen’s waltz. Richard Napoli serves cold punch to Tom Napoli and Pat “We could have danced all night.” All watch as the Queen, Carol Ricci, and her escort, Peter Brock, begin the royal dance. Twisting and twirling, Lexington’s majorettes lead the band at half-time. 26 = The cheerleaders are always on the move. Here they are doing the traditional line-up cheer. Each year Lexington looks forward to the Thanksgiving Day football game with our traditional rival Concord. To encourage pre-game enthusiasm and sportsmanship, pep rallies are held at which the players are introduced by their Coach John Janusas. Although the weatherman as usual did not cooperate with sunshine and warm temperatures at game time, spirit continued to run high, especially when Lexington produced this year’s winning team. Coach Janusas talks on good sportsmanship (a Lexington tradition) for the coming game. a | 27 Following the Christmas vacation the gym really comes alive. With boys and girls scrambling up the ropes, vaulting over “boxes” and “horses,” and traveling down bars, the composite picture is one of real action. Expression by hand movements is fundamental to young actresses Bonnie O’Neil and Cuarol Koury! Excellent performances in music and drama are a result of long hours of practice under the direction of Mrs. Sand- berger and Mr. Kirk. The successful staging of both Pa- tience and Thieves Carnival reflect the hard work of the cast and production staff. The presence of three thieves is too much for Bill Lassek, to the horrified amazement of Alfred Cavaretta, Steve Johnson, Carol Koury, and Ellen Fitz- gerald. The Home Economics classes add a festive touch to the Christmas spirit as Martha The Seniors who are in Chorus take the traditional two-hour break from classes and enjoy caroling in the corridors. There is no greater way to say Merry Christmas to the student body than by singing num- bers from the Messiah. 32 Another Christmas comes and goes and much of the holiday celebration takes place in school. To help the festive atmosphere, mem- bers of the chorus classes sing selections from Christmas music for the student body. Each February the A.F.S. student committee helps the sponsors by holding the A.F.S. Scholarship Dance. Whether they decorate, serve punch and cookies, or entertain in the “Floor Show” all greatly enjoy the traditional evening. Richardson and Carol Wilfong help serve tea to the faculty. Entertainers for the “International Floor Show” of the annual A.F.S. dance in February join together in the finale. Christmas carols by the Brass Choir ring loudly through the auditorium at the start of the Christmas Assembly. 33 Bonnie Mascarello, Janet Semonian, Phil Domina, and Sue Fulton, library staff members, listen attentively to Jean MacDonald, secretary, during a meeting in the library, a stepping off place in the world of science. Such excellent players as Captain Jerry Clancy and Joe and Kieran Lowry were assets to the team. Mr. Wilson, the coach, was proud of the team’s energy and unfailing spirit. This year the team was outstanding with such players as Jim Johnson, John Thoren, and Carl Uran- eck. Not all students may take part in varsity or junior varsity sports, but the students at Lexington High School have the opportunity to learn the same team sportsmanship and physical ability in the intramurals program. Apparatus is offered to both the boys and girls as well as soccer, badminton, volleyball, and bas- ketball. Intramurals Bill Peabody, John Wilkins, Ed Pratley, Ed Whittemore, and Jeff Rutherford play a rugged game of tag football. i) iA 4 A f Ne Pat Laird, Don Waldon, Joyce Brad- ley, and Roy Anderson display skills during gym class. Lanquist show the cheerleaders how it is done. Cheerleaders There would be a vital part of every sports event missing without the quick enthusiasm of the L.H.S. cheerleaders and majorettes. Their most important con- tribution to school life is during the fall season when they must brave cool, brisk weather to create the spec- tator spirit so necessary for our football games. How- ever, all year long both of these groups must offer much of their spare time to practicing new routines and cheers and planning pep rallies. The co-captains of the cheerleaders, Carol Ricci and Pam Cutter, and of the majorettes, Grace Atwood and Karen Balchunas, as well as the entire squads, deserve a round of thanks from the student body. PAUL McCAULEY 75 Spring St. CARL URANECK 56 Turning Mill Rd. . 108 Class of Sixty-Three Beginning the year by selling candy and pens, the energetic Junior Class worked hard and successfully on many class projects. The record attendance at “Let’s Twist Again” boosted the treasury considerably. Dur- ing the winter months members held a food sale and also sold candy at basketball games. A car wash took place in May, and the Junior Prom climaxed the year. Capably leading the class in reaching the proposed goals were President Steve Heinrich, Vice-President Herb Swartz, Secretary Debbie Terrio, and Treasurer Sukey Reed. Miss Leppanen, Mr. Soule, Mr. Stewart, and Mr. Nichols, the class advisers helped with many problems that faced the class. The Junior Class was very active in sports. Chris Curley, Tom Petri, Harry Radcliff, and Doug Slade represented the class on the football squad with their strong defense. Outstanding in basketball were Dick Moore and Ed Whittemore. Pris Dawes and Jane Frei- tas played well as forwards on the field hockey team. The end of the year left the class satisfied with their Steve Heinrich, President; Herbert Swartz, Vice-President; accomplishments. Suzanne Reed, Treasurer; Deborah Terrio, Secretary. The year began with a food sale and the selling of Christmas wrapping paper, and during the basketball season cokes were sold at home games. The year concluded with a record hop in May. These projects all contrib- uted to the treasury and made the class more aware of their responsibilities. The elections held in the fall showed that the class had many competent members. The class elected Hen- ry Newman President; Michael Rafferty Vice-Presi- dent; Diane Baptiste Secretary; and Sandy Chisolm Treasurer. Sophomores participated in many sports and brought added honors to the class. Jim Crisp, Randy Stein, Dick MacIntosh, and Dick Arbeene represented the class on the football squad. Sandy Chisolm was an outstanding wing on the field hockey team. Janet Semonian, Connie Woodberry, and Cindy Saunderson played forward and guards respectively in basketball. Dick Arbeene, Diane Baptiste, Jack Glennon, Phil Hatfield, Dick MacIntosh, and Diane Potter expressed the views and desires of the class by their active par- ticipation on Student Council. The initial year in high school of this class promised much for its future goals. Third Row: D. Batty, W. Barnes, G. Battersby, W. Andrew, R. Ballou, B. Andrews, J. Bailey, R. Arbeene, R. Basney, P.
