W ' does a school year signify? 1961 at Lexing- ton High has seen new faces among the adminis- tration, the faculty, and the students, an enrichment of the courses of study, and a vigorous new step for- ward toward educational goals. The change and progress signal Lexington’s acceptance of the mid-century chal- lenges: the conquest of space by satellites, rockets, and missiles, like the “Minuteman,” and the quest for a full satisfying life in a free democratic world. But the year also has meaning for the individual—his horizons are broadened by new studies, and he enjoys the personal rewards of making friends and achieving success in sports and creative activities. What is the prophetic significance that lies here? The traditions at Lexington will always expand to meet the demands of the future and the student will meet these demands with courage, energy, and the will to achieve. ee eS : + 4 4 a CONTENTS Administrations ne. 0 eo eee Faculty... ¢:crismeece ee a Studentlifent: 22a. ree ee eS Venture Alb Ways.i... 20. ene 4 Practicing Goodwill. ........... 55 Future:Gitizens ee ee Os Staff EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, Julie Coryell ASSISTANT EDITOR, Elizabeth Packard BUSINESS MANAGER, Allan Clemow; ASSIST- ANTS, E. Hanscom Field. A school and its student body going in the direction of success runs efficiently and smoothly. How it goes frequently depends to a large extent on its administra- tion and faculty. Our school is fortunate to have the best leaders we know. Here Mr. Thurlow adjusts the bell schedule regulator which sends us on our way. School Committee members meet frequently and for long hours at a time to chart the progress of Lexington schools and to plan for the future success of Lexington youth. FACULTY MANFRED L. WARREN, B.A., Bowdoin College; M.A., Columbia University; Principal (January 1928- January 1961). We salute Mr. Warren for his many years of service at Lexington High School. As a dedicated teacher he has tirelessly worked to raise our academic standards, to help each student to further his education and to meet life realistically and confidently, and to create a stimulating and friendly esprit de corps in our school. Although in January he assumed a new duty as assist- ant director of instruction of secondary schools, he is still closely associated with our school. The student body is proud to welcome Mr. Johnson, who takes Mr. Warren’s place, as our new principal. CHARLES JOHNSON, B.A., Harvard University; M.A., Boston University; Principal (January 1961-). THE SENIOR PLAY This year’s senior class play, The Matchmaker, by Thornton Wilder, was a satire on the typical comedy of the early twentieth century. Exaggerated action such as Peter Paxton’s hiding under a table in Mrs. Molloy’s hat shop and the near-dismantling of a fashionable New York restaurant spoofed the conventional stag- ing of many plays. During many tedious rehearsals, the cast, headed by Kathi DiNunzio and David Wash- burn learned that farce was probably the most difficult kind of play to perform. Nevertheless, the final produc- tions were fun for the audience and rewarding for the participants. The matchmaker herself (K. DiNunzio) chats with Mrs. Molloy and Flora VanHuysen (J. Diamond) with Cornelius Hackl (N. Greeley) and Minnie Fay (E. Kaleta) in the background. Joanne O’Brien (left) and Bill Peabody (above) puzzle over Iowa tests in Mr. Buck’s homeroom. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Friendly Guest Greeter Pat Conley welcomes Mrs. Sher- man on an errand to the school. 36 National Honor Society is an organization whose members are chosen on the basis of character, service, leadership, and scholarship. Officers this year were Peter Paxton, President; Robert Greenlaw, Vice-presi- dent; Beth Berglund, Treasurer; and Susan Lewis, Sec- retary. Through its various projects members have striven to attain the highest service goals. Although with a small membership of nine, the chapter was host to teachers from several schools for a gifted child con- ference. N.H.S. also sold a revised school handbook, sponsored a paperback Book Fair, encouraged good will with a Student-Faculty basketball game, and pre- sented a scholarship to a senior who was not a member of the society. Thus National Honor Society represents a continued challenge for both its members and non- members. To aid strangers entering our building were the Guest Greeters, a service group sponsored by the Na- tional Honor Society and comprised of worthy seniors. Guest Greeters: Third row: T. Benton, P. Class of Sixty-two Now that our junior year is completed, we recall our many accomplishments. Our booth at the Senior Carni- val was very successful in raising money and arousing class spirit. At all the home basketball games we sold Coke. In the spring we held a food sale, and during the intermission of the school operetta, we sold candy. On May 5 we held our Junior Prom, the most important project for the year. Our officers for this year were Bob Sheridan, Presi- dent; John Thoren, Vice-president; Linda Sawyer, Sec- retary; and Judy Kensley, Treasurer. Our class advis- ers, Mrs. Zwart, Mr. Schutt, and Mr. Soule have also done much, that we appreciate, to guide us carefully and successfully in all of our pro jects. We participated in all the school clubs, especially Dramatic Club, Young Moderns Club, Ski Club, and the Glee Clubs. In sports we were well represented. Don Adzigian, Peter Brock, Bob Hoffman, Greg Jones, Tom Napoli, Jim Saulnier, and Larry Spidle were all first-string men on the football team; and because of his outstanding accomplishments, Don Adzigian was elected to the Middlesex All-Scholastic Football Team. Oscar Kirsten, John Thoren, Stephen Fox, and Roger Hinchcliffe fought hard for the basketball team. Donna Zaffero was an outstanding contributor to the success of the field hockey team. Looking back over our junior Robert Sheridan, President; John Thoren, Vice-president; Linda year, we find it full and rewarding. Sawyer, Secretary; Judy Kensley, Treasurer. Third row: H. Aldrich, R. First row: ra Ri aga ss bier 107 Class of Sixty-three During our first year at Lexington High School we not only adjusted to a new world but also realized the importance that the skills we acquire here will have in our future lives. Early this fall we held class elections and chose as officers Steven Heinrich, President; Jerry DeMichaelis, Vice-president; Sally Dunlap, Secretary; and Michele Green, Treasurer. At Student Council meetings we were represented by Peter Kovach, Marty Whitcombe, Debbie Terrio, Priscilla Dawes, Bob Weeks, and Jerry DeMichaelis. We participated in many extra-curricular activities such as Glee Clubs, Band, Dramatic Club, and Art Club. We were also well represented in sports. Bob Harrigan and Gene Heighton played well for our foot- ball team, while Dick Moore showed promise of be- coming a valuable basketball player. In baseball Ed Wittemore and Spencer Sullivan represented us. We soon learned to settle down to this life and found ourselves involved in several class projects. Our first event was to hold a record hop in the fall; this enter- prize was followed by a December sale of Christmas candy. Later a food sale and the selling of ball-point pens to the student body further helped to increase our Steve Heinrich, President; Jerry DeMichaelis, Vice-president; treasury. In the spring we had a workday during which Michele Green, Treasurer; Sally Dunlap, Secretary. class members performed many odd jobs for the towns- people and donated what they earned to the class. The enthusiasm and willingness of our class members showed that our future years should be successful. Room 112 Third row: R. Bjorkgren, W. Bennett, D. Baird, R. S. Adams, S. Belliveau, J.
