The 1960 LEXINGTON Published by the students of Lexington High School Lexington, Massachusetts Re UR RONGEaee LEXINGTON 1960 ig ar Lexington High School, excellence in every- thing we do ts a matter of tradition. We have come to realize that striving for perfection brings personal satisfaction as well as honor and dignity to us, our school, and our community. Through participation in activities in and out of school we have been con- fronted with challenges and responsibilities as well as carefree recreation. As a result of that partictpa- tion we have learned that we receive from these ac- tivities as much as we put into them. We, the students of L. H. S. and the future leaders of society, know that our lives and the world we live in are, to a great extent, what we make them. The modern construction and facilities of Lexington High School create a building that makes learning pleasant. Al- though a school can only be as good as its students, attrac- tive surroundings can create the needed inspiration. Perhaps the school is not very old in years, but already it holds fond memories and traditions for its students. ADMINISTRATION School Committee. Mr. Paul F. Classes are, of course, the most impor- tant part of school life. Panels and discus- sions in English and History classes as well as learning by doing in the science depart- ment and typing classes broaden the knowledge of the student at L. H. S. Students suddenly discover that physics class can be entertaining, as they follow the actions of “slinky’’ while discussing the principles of light waves. . LEARNING THE GAME OF LIFE Coaches Knight and Ingraham intently survey Lexing- ton’s progress during the Thanksgiving game. The tenor and bass section of the senior Christmas caroling choir line up on the center staircase to render one of their selections. The combined girls’ and boys’ glee clubs, with soloists Barbara Buckingham and Carol Frost, provide music at the annual Christ- mas Assembly. 18 Directed by Mrs. Sandberger, the senior Lisa Spens, foreign exchange student, wishes the student body a Merry Christmas in Swedish after receiving a gift from Nancy Ingraham on behalf of the Student Council. caroling choir stops to serenade the French classes. At Christmas time, the music department tradition- ally contributes its talent to carry the spirit of the sea- son into our school. An inspiring musical assembly and the seniors caroling in the corridors the day before Christmas vacation serve to further the Christmas spirit. The French classes continuing in the mood of things learn the familiar Christmas carols in French and gaily sing them the week before Christmas. “Trial by Jury,’’ presented by the newly formed Gilbert and Sullivan Society, starred D. Responsibilities like these are designed to help the participants assume leadership while performing duties that are for the benefit of their school. It is students such as these who are assets to Lexington High School and the community. Laurie sings “Down in the Valley’’ wi th the accompaniment of Dick Snouf- fer at the Peck’s party. 40 Dramatic talent is given an opportunity to develop through such activities as the An- nual Senior Play and the Dramatic Club, both under the direction of Mr. Kirk, adviser. This year’s Senior play “Green Grow the Lilacs” from which the musical “Oklahoma” was de- rived, comprising a larger cast than ever be- fore, enabled many more students to partici- pate in Dramatics. The Dramatic Club also furthers an interest in the theater by produc- ing plays and studying the components of good drama. Curly, Jim Kyle, and Jeeter Fry, Bob Cuzner, wrangle in the smokehouse scene of “Green Grow the Lilacs.” DRAMATIC CLUB Dramatic Club officers G. MacDonald, Secretary; A. LeBoeuf, Treasurer; J. Clubs and activities are not connected with sports, music, service, science or language but serve the interests of the student by developing other individual talents or interests. The Art Club, the Book Club, the Photography Club, the Radio Club, the Chess Club, and the Young Moderns Club are such activities. Other activities such as F.T.A. and Business Club further the knowledge of the student who aspires to a certain vocation. CROSS COUNTRY With almost the same squad which was so highly successful in 1958, the Lexington High School Cross Country team con- tinued the winning streak begun last year by soundly defeat- ing all its opponents in dual meet competition. Included among the defeated were Malden, Stoneham, and Reading, each of which suffered the misfortune of being beaten by a perfect score. The season was marred only by the unex- pected failure of Lexington’s harriers to win the Middlesex League Meet. However, the following week the team bounced back to repeat its performance of last year in winning the State Class B Championship with the fastest average team time of all classes. The high point of the sea- son came when the eager Lexingtonians won the New Eng- land Meet at White Stadium with the fastest averag e team time in the history of the meet. Tom Baird, John Haines, Ron Johnson, Tom Hale, and Dick Belcher placed fifth, seven- teenth, eighteenth, twenty-eight, and thirty-fourth, respec- tively, in a large field comprising the best runners of the six- state region. Although this has been the most successful season in the history of Lexington High School Cross Country, Coach Nichols offers only a rueful grin when asked about next year, for six of the top seven runners graduate this June. The team scored 122 points, more than any of the totals of the past twelve years. Everyone on the squad was sorry to see Dick Kinsman leave after sustaining a mid-season in- jury; but Dick Robbat, quarterback, and leading-passer Peter Arnold, fast-running Jim O’Shaughnessy, hard-hitting Don Birch, center Ken Palmer, and sophomore Don Adzigian sustained the team. The other members of the squad did their share in topping Cambridge-Latin, Reading, and Wakefield. The boys played in several inches of mud at Leominster and against Melrose, just missing a slide to vic- tory. In the annual Thanksgiving Day game against Concord, Lexington was held back by a strong Concord line, but underclassmen vow revenge in the future. All in all, this year’s squad had a scoring record to be proud of and a good year to look back upon. Since most members of this year’s varsity basketball squad had the advantage of playing varsity basketball last year, coach “Doc” Abell had a well-trained team. Starting in top shape, the boys easily won a place in the Tech Tourney for the first time since 1954. To the delight of all Lexingtonians they also defeated traditional rivals, Belmont and Winches- ter. An outstanding feature of the team was its combination of both scholastic and athletic abilities, for many players were consistently on the honor roll. After the completion of a successful 1959 season and the loss of only two significant players, Coach Lord envisioned even greater success for this year’s track team as it com- peted for the first time in Class B of the Middlesex League. Among returning seniors were five state meet medalists, Jay Jones in the 440, John Abell in the 880, Tom Baird in the mile, Bob Skoog in the 220, and Bernard MacCallum in the low hurdles. Other outstanding boys in such events as the dashes, the discus, the javelin, the high jump, and the broad jump as well as the above mentioned were Tom Hale, John Haines, Ron Johnson, Joe Dini, Bob Greenlaw, Dave Hat- field, Tom Mahan, Jeff Slade, Jerry Cogan, and Dick Swartz. It was these boys who were responsible for the host of Lexington victories. Lexington’s track team wins an- other meet as Dick Calvert runs the 220, Dave Phinney scores on the hur- dles, Jay Jones crosses the finish line first in the 220, and Joe Dini jumps an inch higher. SPRING SPORTS With the coming of spring, L.H.S. students eagerly participate in out-of-door sports. Winter’s confinement is flung aside as the population on the tennis courts and the base- ball diamonds increases. Beginning on Pa- triot’s Day, the baseball team rallied each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons to meet the strong opponents of the Middle- sex League. The tennis teams, although fewer in participants, took to the courts in high spirits to practice improving their backhand lobs and overhead smashes. Softball. Fourth Row: C. Cunningham, S. CLASS OF 196] When our first class meeting was called to order this year, President Bob Greenlaw, Vice-president Ronnie Johnson, Secretary Anne Fletcher, and Treasurer Edith Hathaway be- gan for our class an outstanding year. Mary Chicarello, Janet Donnelly, Ellen Schumacher, Susan Jenson, Nathalie Hutchins, Bob Greenlaw, and Ronnie Johnson represented us in Student Council. In sports, players such as Joe Skinner and Wayne Louder participated in football. Ronnie Johnson and Ed McGovern took their places on the New England Cham- pion Cross Country team; while Jeff Williams in tennis and Bob Greenlaw in basketball were outstanding. Helping to produce spirit were cheerleaders Sue Jenson and Mary Chicarello, and majorette Diane Bielat. In school functions we were active and showed our musical talents in the Operetta, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, A Cappella Choir, and the Glee Clubs. On the American Field Service Program we had five semi-finalists; Anne Fletcher, Trina Benton, Susan Lewis, Betsy Packard, Anne LeBoeuf, and Dick Martin. A Carnival booth, the Sadie Hawkins Dance, and our Jun- ior Prom were our main class projects. These were made suc- cessful through enthusiastic, hard-working classmates. The many activities and new responsibilities we have shouldered this year have pointed out to us the large task we face next year as leaders of our school. As a class, we can say we are now ready for that great challenge. Room 150 Third row: R. Bagelman, J. Bernardi, R. Antonelli, C. Alderson, R. Anastasy, E. Bailey, J. Ball, C. Anthony. Second row: D. Room 114 CLASS OF 1962 The sophomore year began with a record hop, the Fall Frolic, and continued through the year with members partici- pating in every activity and sport in school. Popular activities among the members included Young Moderns Club, Ski Club, Junior Red Cross, the Newspaper Staff, and Chess Club. There were many outstanding athletes in basketball, foot- ball, hockey, and baseball. Oscar Kirsten and Roger Hinch- cliffe played basketball; John Thoren, Don Adzigian as quarterback, and Jim Saulmier were active in football; Bill Wittemore, Kieran Lowry, Jerry Clancy, and Nicky Bouras played important positions on the hockey team; and Greg Jones, Tom Cizek, and Don Adzigian were members of the baseball team. Last June we elected our class officers and Student Council Representatives. President Bob Sheridan, Vice-president Dan Coquillette, Secretary Linda Sawyer, and Treasurer Judy Kensley did a commendable job in leading our class in all its activities. Representing us in Student Council were Don Adzigian, Janice Beaupre, Donna Kazanjian, Joyce Taylor, Myle Holley, and Greg Jones. On the cheerleading squad were Donna Kazanjian, Carol Ricci, Pam Cutter, Sonja Stone, and Joyce Taylor. This year we have grown scholastically, spiritually, and socially. We are now ready to move on to our junior year more confidently and with a better under- standing of ourselves and our abilities. Third row: R. Battersby, C. Alexson, R. Aquaro, R. Appleton, D.
