CLASS OF 1956 OFFICERS Second row: Heath, T. , Mr. Ramsdell, Martin, E. First raw: Wells, S. , Miss Smith, Sweeney, J. aM, kT a tigen Se, TTX 52 CLASS OF 1956 Dear Diary, January 24, 1955 Today was a normal day for me. | started off the day with French. We are reading a story about Marius and Cosette which is very interesting. Then | went to history, and after the current events and a quiz, we listened to the people on Panel Three give their reports. After a study period came algebra where we learned more about exponents. During X and L period Sue Wells, Pat Nordling, Peter Boyer, Pat McDonough, Bob McNamara, and David Cheever attended the Student Council meeting, while various other girls and boys went to operetta rehearsal, band, art club, and other activities. At the conclusion of the activities | had gym class; we climbed ropes and did stunts today. Following gym, | had English. We are following American literature right up from pioneer days to modern times. Today we read some stories by Mark Twain which were quite funny. After school | stayed for basketball practice, and Alice Garrity, Luise Ross, Nancy Schloman, Joanne Sweeney, and Pat McDonough went to cheerleading practicing. | was talking to Eddie Martin our president, and Sue Wells, vice- president, after school too. They said that the two dances we are going to hold this year, one at the beginning of March and the other, the Junior Prom, in May would be as much a success as the food sale we held in January. Later, while | was talking to Joanne Sweeney, secretary, and Ted Heath, treasurer, they also expressed the same thought, so | think that our class will have a very success- ful year. Many of the undersigned will testify to the advisability of the latter; for we found fun and friendship in belonging to many organizations. We are represented in clubs by the following membership: Dramatic Club - four, Audio-Visual Club - five, with Wililam Westburg as secretary, Science Club - eight, Spanish Club - two, ‘Spotlight’ - six, Art Club - five, including Rob- erta Clements, secretary, Orchestra - eight, Band - sixteen, Glee Club - twenty- seven, the Octet - eight, Madrigal Singers - one, Operetta - lead, Marilyn Taylor, and chorus - three, Red Cross - eight, Traffic Squad - ten, Assembly Committee - three, and Library Staff - nine. CLASS OF 1958 Entering L. H. S. in the fall of 1954 the Freshman found themselves in a new mod- ern school with different surroundings and many new faces. They lost no time in elec- ting class officers and representatives, or- ganizing teams, and planning future pro- jects. Bo Chu was elected class president and Andrea Dexter, vice-president, Pat Cut- ter, secretary, and Carolyn Sweeney, treas- urer. To represent them in Student Council, the class elected Andrea Dexter, Lance Coop- er, and David Adzigian. The basketball, hockey, and football teams have had suc- cessful seasons and have shown Dick Ben- net, Bo Chu, David Adzigian, and Donald 65 MacElroy to be promising future athletic stars at Lexington High. The very capable cheerleaders of the class were Andrea Dex- ter, captain, Wendy Benton, Lois Carota, Pat Cutter, Jo Ann Herbold, Bunny Kensley, Judy Porter, Mary Ann Senata, Carolyn Sweeney, and June Tracey. Included in the plans of the Freshman Class for the year were a food sale, a school tag day, a fair, and a paper drive. It is almost inevitable that after its energetic beginning in high school life that the class of 1958 will, on its way up the ladder, be remembered by teachers, upper- and underclassmen alike. YEARBOOK The Yearbook Staff under the direction of Lois Hemstreet ha s worked diligently this year to create a book everyone will enjoy. Not only the Senior’s activites and achievements are rep- resented, but the underclassmen are pictured as well. The various candid shots show us in the big moments of our lives and catch time for us for years to come. STUDENT COUNCIL NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The outstanding activity of this year’s Student Council was sponsoring Miguel deZevala, a for- eign exchange student from Madrid, Spain. The Council also approved Freshman Class Cheer- leaders, organized a Better Schools Committee, and started the “L’’ Club. A future project is raising $350 to sponsor another exchange stu- dent at LHS in the 1955-56 school year. This year’s National Honor Society, although hampered by financial problems, finished and sold handbooks at the opening of school, pro- vided guest greeters, sold pencils, ushered at a U.N. Day affair, had a food sale, and a picnic. Seventeen new members were admitted in Febru- ary. Plans are now under way for a scholarship for a deserving student next year. Third row: Rogers, E. ARTISTHY Art Club proved a worthwhile organization for all who wish to cultivate their artistic talents. A special feature of this year’s club was its field trips to such places as the Massachusetts School of Art and Boston University. The members also enjoyed movies, speakers, and special projects. ART CLUB DRAMATICS This year’s Dramatic Club had a varied pro- gram covering many phases of dramatics. The club devoted several meeings to learing the fun- damentals of acting, such as expression, motion, and make-up. Then the members applied this knowledge b y acting, writing skits, and by doing monologues and pantomines. One of the high spots of the year was a trip to Boston to see The “Caine Mutiny Court Martial Scene.” Third row: Richards, D., Lynch, D., Ferreira, R., Royle, N., Tapley, B., Stanton, B. The Spotlight, our school paper, whose Editor-in-Chief Joyce Herbold was assisted by a competent staff aimed this year to create a bigger and better newspaper. We eagerly read monthly news, timly articles, clever cartoons, besides the spice of an interesting gossip column. The Luncheroom Committee, reminding our hungry students to mind their manners, has done an excellent job keeping our cheerful eating quarters pleasant and orderly. This group aids the Student Council in sharing the responsibility of keeping our lunch period a credit to our school and an enjoy- able part of the day. FUUTBALL Throughout the season, the football team displayed outstanding sportsmanship and team spirit common to all Lexington High School athletic organizations. Me- morable to local fans and players alike were the cold, rainy, Saturday afternoons on which the squad took to the slippery surface of Parker Field. The highlight of this 19 54 football season came when Co-captain Street- er Stuart, with the aid of a powerful line, plunged for three touchdowns shutting out the opposition 21-0. Coach Helin and Assistant Coach Cooper were sup- ported throughout the season by excellent perform- ances of such boys as Pete Scopa, Bill Maloney, Gene Molloy, Bob Murray, Ronnie Schmid, Co-capt. They are to be congratulated on their showing despite their small number. The fortunate spectators who attended hockey games by means of Dad’s Club buses witnessed many hard fought, scrappy encounters. This year’s team, coached by. BATTER UP This year’s softball team had the advantage expectation. Pat Melly returned to his position of eight veterans from the last year’s unde- feated squad. Joined with the many other enthusiastic girls who went out for the first time, these members had another fruitful season. Under the guidance of Coach Adzigian, the baseball team took to the diamond with great behind the plate, while Streeter Stuart, Al Rongone, and Bill Connor shared pitching and fielding responsibilities. Gene Molloy con- tinued with some classy performances at the key stone sack, Bob MacNamara and Stewie Chafe handled chores at first base. Much credit is due to many other boys who moved up from the 1954 J. V. squad. Excellent performances displayed by returning lettermen Ed Martin, Spike Paranya, Ralph Hoxie, Bob Mac- govern, Art Makechnie, and Owen Devereux were, in part, directly aided by this new fall sport. Other members who added to the laurels of the track team were Paul Engborg, broad jumper, and high jump specialist Dave Barker. CAOSS COUNTRY After outdistancing four out of five opponents by considerable margin, the hill and dalers went on further to prove themselves a top ranking Cross Country Team by taking second place in the Class C division of the State Meet in Novem- ber. Out of a total of seventy runners represented by ten teams, Spike Paranya, Ed Martin, Art Meckechnie, and Bob Sands placed fourth, fifth, seventh, twelfth, and thirty-second respectively. The Indian Cheer Shall we let them try? The Senior Cheering Squad, one of precision and peppiness, was always in the swing of things —leading the fans to applaud their teams—no matter what the score. The Hucklebuck and Chug Locomotive cheers were our favorites this year. L. H. S. school spirit was also greatly lifted by the energetic Freshman Cheerleaders. Dexter, A., Sainato, M.
