The most outstanding accomplishment of the council's activities has been the adoption of a new bell system, which provided us with a much needed activity period everyday. Two dances which earned enough money to buy new uniforms for the cheer- leaders were also sponsored by the Student Council. The officers of the Society are President Judith Johnson, Vice- President Sally Raymond, Secretary. Mary-Jane Coughlin, and Treasurer Jo- anna Crosby. The newly elected members are Rose Brown, Wilene Cowles, Jack Downey, Raymond Doyle, Peter Hall, and Lucy Hogan. The faculty committee, Miss Wheeler, Miss Kinley, Mrs. Whiting, and Mr. Moyle, select the students best recommended by the faculty. A few more members were elected in May. SPOTLIGHT First Row: M. A. Ferry “The Ghost Train’, selected by the Senior Play Committee, was staged and directed by Mr. Cheev- er and Diana Hardy, student director, and it cer- tainly won the widespread approval of all who attended the performances. It takes place in a dingy, rundown railroad station in Maine, and because a rather thoughtless, silly Englishman pulled the emergency cord, a married couple, a pair of newly-weds, and am old spinster were forced to spend the night in the haunted station. The sound effects committee sent trains roaring and screaming with whistles blowing, bells ringing, and lights flashing through the station. A great deal of credit goes to all the committees who worked hard to make this play a success, and especially to Mr. Cheever and the cast, who spent many hours rehearsing. Sliva, “The Pirates of Penzance” chosen and directed by Mrs. Sandberger, was performed in the early part of April. The plot centers around Frederick, who was apprenticed as a pirate instead of a pilot through the mistake of his nurse, Ruth and Mabel, one of the daughters of the Major-General. The choruses of pirates, policemen and wards of the Major-General added to the success of the colorful performance. Credit goes to the leads, the choruses, and Mrs. Sandberger, for producing another excellent and memorable op- eretta. The cast was as follows: First Row: P. Mortimer, D. Legroe, P. Enborg, P. Officers for the year 1950- 1951 were President Bert Borngesser, Vice-President Joanna Crosby, and Secre- tary-Treasurer Nancy Mather. The band attended all of the home games, plus many of the football games away from home. When tag day was held on election day, over $500 was raised for the purchase of new uniforms and new instruments. This year’s spring concert schedule included a concert for the Rotary Club, the Annual Spring Concert at Cary Hall, and the Music Festival at Marblehead. ORCHESTRA First pews Ae Cromwell, P. The Senior High School Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Donald Gilles- pie, has performed at various functions throughout the year. It played at the Teachers’ Institute and furnished music at the Senior Class Play. In May the orchestra performed in the Musical Festival given at Cary Memorial Hall and provided music at Senior High Graduation. The orchestra, which meets once a week, is very important to the school’s music curriculum, for it gives high school pupils who are interested in music an opportunity to work together and to use their musical talents. Mackey ACTIVITIES This year the French Club was divided into two groups, the Sophomore Club and the Junior and Senior Club, because of the large number of students be- longing. The French Clubs have been very active under the guidance of Miss Ratté. The Dramatic Club, with Mr. Cheever as faculty adviser, has been one of the most popular school clubs. Speakers, programs on sound effects and make-up, and short skits have been the subjects of programs. The Assembly Committee, under the guidance of Miss Murray and Mrs. Marshall, has planned several interesting and entertaining programs. A Christmas play and an assembly in which Dickens's characters were portrayed were two of the better programs. The Traffic Squad, a group of senior girls and boys, is an important school body, as it makes certain that all rules of passing to and from classes are obeyed. The Program Committee was very helpful selling programs at the football games, and the Junior Red Cross Council, under the guidance of Miss Wheeler, has done a great deal to promote a nation wide organization. The Discophiles Club is a small group of students who, helped by Mrs. Tingloff, wish to further their interests in classical music. Mrs. Sandberger’s Glee Clubs have been a big help in providing music for assemblies and other school activities. FIELD HOCKEY First Row: M. L. Ferry, D. Wiltshire, B. Rymes, G. Busa, Capt. P. Powers, L. McElroy, M. Polley, J. Martin, E. Smith, M. Frith, E. Cross, B. MacDonald, A. Lynah. The girls’ Field Hockey team ended its season with two wins, two ties, and three losses. Both the forward line and the defense showed a good deal of teamwork in all the games. Miss Leavitt and all the fans have agreed that the game with Concord proved to be the most exciting and best played game of the season, Lexington came out on top by a margin of 2-0. As Miss Leavitt said, ‘We really clicked.” At the Concord High School playday, Lexington did a fine job with a record of two defeats, two wins, and two ties. One of our players, Beverly Rymes, was chosen to play in the “all star’’ game. Although the season was not an excellent one, the team under the expert guidance of Coach Leavitt never lacked team spirit or team work, two essen- tial virtues in playing any sport. Norlin Once again Coach Leavitt's hoopsters have done an excellent job in basket- ball. Barbara Shaw, the varsity captain, led the team to victory in all but two games. The squad has really lived up to Miss Leavitt's expectations of a win- ning team. Building up the score for Lexington were Mary Zehner, Jeannie Flaherty, Peggy Deloury, Janie Martin, and Sally Gay. The fine piece of work that was done by our guards, Captain Barbara Shaw, Dolores Russo, Barbara Lichten- berg, Sally Raymond, and Virginia Lee really made it a hard task for the opposing teams to score. The Junior Varsity this year won the majority of their games. The forwards on the team were Martha Norlin, Barbara Borngesser, Ann Raymond, Ellen Samborski, Patsy Mortimer, and Mary Ann Pomposo. The forwards worked very well with the guards June Layte, Ruth Tessier, Barbara MacDonald, Nancy Oldford, Susan Powers, Jean Webber, Marcia Polley, Betty Cross, Mary Lou Miller, and Debbie Smith. The scores for the season were as follows: Lexington 46 Reading 34 Lexington 45 Winchester 37 Lexington 42 Melrose 32 Lexington 40 Belmont 35 Lexington 50 Wellesley 16 Lexington 34 Concord 29 Lexington 33 Arlington 39 With the return of many veterans, and a large number of sophomore and junior players, Lexington can count on having another excellent basketball team next year. Ingraham One of the best compliments this year’s football team could have received came from Concord’s championship team’s Coach ‘Bernie’ Megin after the hard-fought Turkey Day battle. Coach Megin said then that the Lexington eleven was the scrappiest team he had played during the season. Coach Ingraham’s Co-captains John Fradette and Larry McLaughlin set the pace for good sportsmanship and fight all season long. Cool-headed Rod MacLean helped bring the team’s spirit to a peak in some hotly contested gridiron battles. The championship form of all the boys in the Stoneham game will not be forgotten soon. Unfortunately the team suffered many injuries during the season, and it was a real blow when hard-hitting “Red” Barrett, the main- stay of the team, was forced to the sidelines for the rest of the season during the Wakefield game. Coach Ingraham had reason to be proud of his boys this season even though the record was not the best Lexington has seen. BOYS BASKETBALL tga | Sea Higgins, R. Stevens, R. Lee, Co-Captains R. Richardson, R. Sykes, W. Callahan, R. Reed, R. Medeiros, P. Glennan, T. Busa, R. FitzPatrick In a great upset victory over Winchester the basketball team reached the season's height of success. A win over Belmont, the first in many years, also showed the championship form the team displayed all season. Much credit for success goes to Co-captain Dick MacDonnell's great plays and Co-captain Toby Snelson's clever setshots. ‘Butch’’ Lee was one of the high scorers on the team and rated personal attention from the local sportswriters for his ability to come through in tight spots. The defensework of Larry McLaughlin and Bill Cunningham kept the ball continually at the opponent's end of the court. Having reached the semi-finals in tournament play when this writeup goes to press, the team promises to end the season in a flourish of success that pins laurels on Coach “Doc” Abell’'s ability to turn out clever ball-hand- lers, good shots, and admirable sportsmanship and teamwork. Next season's team is left a high example to live up to by this year’s livewire team. HOCKEY First Row: D. Phalen, W. Barrett, T. Vaccerello, G. Galbraith Co-Captain, J. Galvin Co-Captain, W. DeFelice Sparked by the stout playing of Co-captain George Galbraith and Walter Johnston of the line, Lexington’s hockey team finished the season with a good amount of success. Inexperience in the early part of the season of the goalies and nonveterans kept the team from showing its true worth until the latter part of its schedule. Credit is due in large amount to the expert defensework of Co-captain Jack Galvin and George Royal. With a good backlog of sopho- more and junior boys earning team berths this year, Coach Tom Moon can look forward to many successful seasons in the future. First Row: D. Pierce, S. Tutin, Capt., N.
