Furdon, treasurer) and the faculty adviser, Mr. Moyle, this year’s Student Council members continued their campaign to bring about a closer relationship between the council and the student body. Early in the year they held an assembly in which they explained what the council is and some of its functions, such as the sale of A. S. A. tickets and the planning of social affairs. During October, four Sophomore members and one new Senior were elected. The greatest single accomplishment of the council this year was the introduction of a more democratic voting system, patterned after the one used nationally in adult elections, and complete with checkers, ballot-clerks, and private voting booths. This system was used effectively in the . election of class officers and Lexington’s candidates for Good Government Day (J. Adams for the Senate, and K. Cox for the House of Representatives). The Student Council was also instrumental in the distribution of a new and better ‘Spotlight’, which appeared in the form of a small magazine, and in the purchase of a much-needed public address system for the school. 30 YEARBOOK STAFF The Yearbook Staff sincerely hopes that all the graduates of the class of 1950 will always find this book a pleasant haven of memories in the years to come. We would also like to extend our most sincere gratitude to Miss Kinley and Mr. Moyle who worked so diligently with us to help make the book a success. First Row: M. Burke, B. McAnaul, B. Currie, B. This organization gives recognition to outstanding students on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Candidates are first nominated by a classmate, and on the nomina- tion paper there is a record of the person's marks and school activities. A final decision is then made by the faculty who considers carefully the four points required of the candidate. Seven new members were installed at an impréssive ceremony on Tuesday, January 24, led by the six members who were elected in their junior year. Pins, on which is the torch emblem of the society, were presented to each new member. To be a member of this society is the highest honor that can be given to any student. 33 PERETTA First Row: R. Coach Chet Ingraham’'s charges showed plenty of hustle all year, and even though they were not on the winning road, they can't be accused of not trying. The Blue and Gold reached their heights against a strong class B Wakefield eleven, winning by a 6-0 count. The boys went into the Concord tilt with a chance for an upset, but after fighting every inch of the way, they lost 20 to 0. Definite standouts on this year’s club were Larry Mc- Laughlin and Jack Cerasuolo in the forward wall, and backfield- men Win Ricker, Bill McDonough, Jack Adams, and John Fradette. 42 FIELD HOCKEY hl al M. Five wins and only two defeats made the field hockey team appear very successful this year. Miss Doris Leavitt's good guid- ing of her peppy and skillful girls, with the fine leadership of Co- Captains Ruth Berglund and Madelyn Burke, had the entire school rooting for them all season. The opposition found a defense that was hard to penetrate. Halfbacks Ann Bowker, Ruth Berglund, Madelyn Burke, fullbacks, Nancy Joslin, Judy Swanson, and goalie Betty Lynah were always on the alert. Forwards Alice Damery, Jane Packard, Mary Connor, Phyllis Dodge, Beverly Rymes, and Captain-elect Pat Miller kept the ball deep in the opponents’ terri- tory. Seniors who played on the undefeu ted junior Varsity were the hard-driving fullbacks Captain M. Whalen, A. Heaney, M. Webb, M. Richardson, and forwards S. Tutin and B. Moakley. 43 BUYS BASKETBALL First Row: W. Cunningham, K. Hoyt, K. Cox, K. Schmid, J. Furdon, R. Stevens, R. Lee. Second Row: D. Patton, J. Busa, T. Snelson, R. Weisinger, R. Rosenberger, R. Faulkingham. 44 The Lexington High hoop team, after getting off to a slow start, finally hit its peak and with a little less fate might have had a better record. The team lost five pre-league games in a row, including a four point defeat to the Alumni, but they have been a thorn in the side of many in the fast Middlesex league. One good thing about this year’s team is their coolness under pressure, for they have taken three overtime contests. Ken Cox and Jim Furdon have constituted the back bone of the club this year, while Karl Schmid is just beginning to score with regularity. Cox is high scorer with 126 markers, but Dick McDonnell, who is the best shot on the team, is close behind with 116 points. Other boys who are playing crowd-pleasing bas- ketball are Ken Hoyt, Bill Cunningham, Dick Stevens, and Toby Snelson. GIRLS BASKETBALL First Row: B. Shaw, J. Packard, M. Zehner, A. Damery, M. Whalen, H. Stevens, A. Cotter, B. Litchenberg. Second Row: J. Catalano, S. Lee, M. McLaughlin, P. Mortimer, D. Russo, S. Gay, B. Bump, M. Norlin, Miss Leavitt. Third Row: P. Delourey, E. Samborski, J. Flaherty, M. Nelson, J. Layte. The basketball team has had its most victorious season in many years. Up to the time of playing Arlington's strong team, the girls had won six games and lost none. Doing a fine job of guarding the basket for the first team were guards Captain Alice Damery, Mary Whalen, Barbara Shaw, and sophomore Barbara Litchen- burg. The girls who were responsible for piling up the score against their opponents were Helen Stevens, Ann Cotter, Jane Packard, and sophomore Mary Zehner. The girls played excellent basketball against very strong opponents. The accurate shoot- ing of the forwards and the superb guarding have kept their rivals’ score to a minimum. This team was a big threat to any opponent. Senior girls who played well on the Junior Varsity were Co-Captains Sue Tutin and Mary Connor, and Beverly Bump. 45 HOCKEY First Row: B. Dunan, W. Barrett, J. Galvin, W. Johnston, J. Harrington, R. Burke, F. DeFelice. Second Row: G. Galbraith, T. McDonough, D. Meek, W. Mears, J. Higgins, P,. Vadebonceur, H. Smith, R. Mercer, T. Vaccerello, D. De- Felice. The Lexington High pucksters have come a long way this year and at the time of writing this are in the hot battle for third place. The scoring punch, which has been missing all year, was finally found in the last game as the boys poured it on Hudson 7-0. The first line of Joseph Harrington, Dick Burke, and Walter Johnson has done a good job, scoring a large percentage of the goals. Coach Tom Moon, former Olympic star, has built a very fine defensive setup with his boys. Frank DeFelice has been brilliant in the nets, while Don Flaherty, Bill Barrett, and Jack Galvin have been holding forth on the blue line. These girls were chosen from a large group of candidates for their vitality, enthusiasm, and ability to organize and to spark the cheering sections at all games. Led by their able captain Mary Whalen, they did an outstanding job at the football and basketball games. They will always be remem- bered for their colorful interpretation of Two Bits, Four Bits’’ and for their peppy singing. Their unwavering loyalty and their everlasting enthusiasm were apparent wherever they went. We have been very proud to have this group represent Lexington High School at home and on trips to neigh- boring towns and cities. Seniors on the squad this year were Mary Whalen, Mary Connor, Ann Cotter, Phyllis Dodge, and Norma Fenerty. Jun iors were Sally Tutin and Dorothy Wiltshire, and sophomores were Mary Buckley, Loreen Norlin, and Marion White. 90 e a a) PANU ol Office Staff: ‘Many hands make light work.’ 52 Our Brinksie twins.
