The advisors who made this possible were Miss Murray, Mrs. Sand- berger, and Mrs. Marshall. One of the goals was to encourage more assemblies with student participation. This was achieved through an open Student Council meeting, a panel discussion, and a talent show. Two of the most popular assemblies were: Joe Mitchell Chapple, who spoke on school spirit, and George Wedberg, a pianist. First Row: W. Peck, M. Towle, Mrs. Marshall, Miss Murray, F. Joslin. Under the co-editorship of Maureen Cronin and Gene Mirabelli, the year’s work of the Spotlight steadily progressed and the issues which were presented to the student body were met with enthusiastic approval. Bettie Booker, advertising manager, made the Spotlight a financial success. Jean Cox, head typist, led a group of faithful, diligent girls who kept on their jobs and made the Spotlight possible. To all these students belongs a great deal of credit, for without them publication of the Spotlight would have been impossible. We salute the Spotlight staff and thank it for giving us a good school paper during 1947-1948. B. Rivinius, captain s P. Sheldon, M. Connor, A. Cotter, M. Woodbury, M. Rycroft, B. Lindsay, J. Stevens, P. Peterson, B. A. Ferguson. Sowolealesers malo Pep, spirit, vitality, and vigor are but a few nouns that might be used for L.H.S.’s cheerleaders — ten sport’s-minded girls who devote their time and energy to help cheer the teams through their hardest games as well as to share the glories of victory with them. Barbara Rivinius, a member of the squad for three years, was captain. Although Barb is petite, her pep and vitality make her a qualified leader. Another senior, Pat Sheldon, a second year member, proved her ability to yell and cheer heartily. Betty Ann Ferguson's winning smile makes her an irreplaceable member. Joanne Stevens’ sparkling personality has helped many times. New additions to the squad this year are: senior Marjorie Rycroft with her vibrant nature, and juniors Betsy Ann Lindsay with her marvelous sense of humor and Phyllis Peterson with her effervescent spirit. Three vivacious sophomores, Ann Cotter, Mary Connor, and Marlene Woodbury are excellent material for the future. Joslin, A. Heaney. Under the coaching of Miss Doris Leavitt and the leadership of Captain Margaret Brown, the L. H. S. field hockey team turned in a commendable season. Their record of two wins, two ties, and three defeats can not show the team spirit, fair play, and skill demonstrated by the girls dur- ing every game. One of the high points of the season was the team’s participation in a suburban school com- petition at which they won two out of three games. Margaret Brown was selected goalie for the scholastic all-star first team, and Barbara Rivinius made the all-star seconds as right wing. The swift, accurate line was due to the hard playing of Barb Rivinius, Prue Morey, Pam Thayer, Pinky Parks, and Barb Clifford. Our excellent defensemen, Dot Kelley, Sally Bowker, Janet Roberts, Louise Bickford, Betsy Ann Lindsay, and Margaret Brown helped keep the opposing teams’ scoring down. BASKETBALL Third Row: D. S. girls’ basketball team is about half finished as this book goes to press. Under the guidance of Captain Lee MacLauthlin and Coach Doris Leavitt, the girls have played excellent, winning basketball against well-trained opponents. The only senior forward was Mardie Gleason whose accurate shooting, along with that of juniors Lee McLauthlin and Mimi Lee, piled up many a good score for the home team. Guarding our basket against the intrusion of scorers, and keeping the opposing team’s score to a minimum, were seniors Sally Bowker, Margie Rycroft, and sophomore Mary Whalen. Second Row: C. Playing a ten game schedule, the team reached its peak in the Concord game when it held the defending Class D cham- pions to a scoreless tie. The key to Lexington’s success was team balance, for all the boys shared honors equally. Coach Cooper and his assistants, Mr. Adzigian and Mr. Ingraham, deserve credit for bringing the boys to their late season peak. Although lettermen Captain DeWolfe, Dewing, Nylander, Stevens, Miller, Zehner , Lowe, Adams, Brown, King, Albertine, Hosford, Sykes, and Brooks graduate, a great many veterans are returning next year, and show promise of making the strongest Lexington team in years. Lexington High's basketball team is one of the strongest in Class B this year. At this writing, an experienced team, led by co-captains Manny Coscia and Charlie Sykes, has compiled a record of victories and defeats. In the strong Middlesex League, the boys are in second place. With more luck they might be in first place, for the only losses have been to Belmont, by the close score of 34-32 on both occasions. The excellent showing of the team makes it a leading candidate for an invitation to the Tech Tournament, in which ‘Doc” Abell’s boys have appeared for seven consecu- tive years. This year, lettermen Coscia, Sykes, Parker, Dewing, Zehner, Merrill, and Albertine are graduating, so it appears that Coach Abell will have to rebuild extensively in order to have another team as good as this year’s. Front Row: M. Harrington, I. Sherwood, R. Lynah, P. Montague, B. Copp, Capt. B. Armstrong, R. Brooks, B. Hosford, B. Mercer, I. Morgan. pecond Rew: F. DeFelice, W. Keyes, B. Revou, R. Lombard, G. Brooks, P. Swanson, D. Burke, R. Barrett, P. Scopa, Manager F. Aker. Although the hockey team has lost many of its star players of the past two seasons, Coach Tom Moon has managed to find another very fine team. With only a few experienced players, led by Captain Bob Armstrong, and hampered by the usual problems of finding ice and cleaning it after snowstorms, the team has-improved steadily, and at this point is tied for second place in the Eastern Mass. League. The highlight of the season was the 2-2 tie with league-leading Malden, in which Malden had to come from behind to save its unbeaten record. The backbone of Lexington’s strength has been the strong first line of Bob Armstrong, Bob Hosford, and Ray Brooks. Although these three boys are graduating, Coach Moon will have a large group of veterans to work with next year, and Lexington should again prove difficult to beat. TENNIS Left to Right: D. Dodd, A.
