We are well known since our President, Jack Bailey, was elected as President of the Eastern Massachusetts Division, Treasurer of the New England High School Division, and is on the Directors and Executive Board of each. Besides having wonderful times at the Eastern Massachusetts Division semi-annual conven- tions at Beverly and Wellesley, we learned a lot about other schools and their problems. We profit by their experience just as they do from ours. Working with Jack on our executive board were Dick Parker as vice-president; Elsie Wallace as secretary; Conrad Buck as treasurer; and Mr. Moyle as our faculty adviser. ASSEMBLY Second Row: D. Michelson, B. Lindsay, J. Stevens, G. Burnell, J. Hudson, H. Drew, M. Shanahan, N. Parks, D.’Sweetser. First Row: B. Rosenberger, D. Fifield, D. Goyette, B. Lyon, J. Donnelley, J. Litchfield, J. Sherwood, P. Hubbart, Miss Kinley. The general census of opinion is that assemblies have been the best we have had for several years. Miss Kinley and Miss Lunt, our advisors, have helped us to provide the students with a variety of interesting and entertaining programs. Some of the most popular ones have been Joe Mitchell Chapel, who spoke on his own experi- ences; Col. Furlong, on foreign policies; Mr. Mack on India; and Dean Butler who spoke to the college students. We also enjoyed Harvey Davies with his piano program; Frank Armitage and his imper- sonations of Dickens’ characters; and Richard Corson, a make-up artist. A very effective Christmas program was presented, panel discussions on current problems, and instructions in ballroom dancing were produced by L.H.S. students themselves. SENIOR PLAY Fourth Row: E. Maynard. The play chosen by the Senior Class was Aurania Rouverol’s Growing Pains. The plot centered around the McIntyre family, their trials and tribulations, as well as the amusing situations due to their adolescent offspring. The cast and all the Senior Class are very grateful to the director, Miss Mary Curran, for putting so much time and patience into the production. Her dramatic experience and seemingly tireless efforts were the main factor in making the play the success it was. Marjorie Samsel excellently portrayed Mrs. McIntyre and Professor McIntyre was played by Nick Browne. Don Lynah did a fine job as the seventeen year old youth, and Terry, a sweet child of fifteen, was cleverly characterized by Carolyn Maxwell and Barbara Myers. Most of the Senior Class contributed to the play in one way or another: as supporting members of the cast, understudies, behind stage, on tickets and advertising. French Club was indeed fortunate in having as its faculty advisor, Miss Elizabeth Ratté, who introduced many interesting and new ideas. She was assisted by Elinor Zellin and Mary Lou McLaughlin, president and vice-president respectively. Meetings were called once a month, during which sessions the duties of secretary were performed by Maureen Cronin and treasurer by Claire “Martin. In order to adopt a French child, funds were raised by means of The French Follies which were a financial and entertaining success. The production included dancing and singing by talented Club members and short entertaining skits were presented in the foreign tongue. Waitresses served refreshments to the audience as they sat at their tables. Two of the outstanding events of the club calendar were the Christmas Party and also the traditional annual picnic which brought to a close a very enjoyable year. Five issues are scheduled, three having been published as this goes to press. The best of these was the Christmas issue which was the realization of the entire staff's cooperative attitude and diligent work. Another big issue is planned for graduation. Feature Editor, Mary Jane Samborski, deserves credit for always meeting deadlines with good material. Claire Burke, as editor of Girls Sports, has made this addition to Spotlight an enjoyable one. Boys Sports have been well covered by Russell Fay and Don Lynah. Assistant Editor, Jean Cox, has been of valuable assistance in getting Spotlight to the publishers. The managers, Don Fifield (Busi- ness), Margaret Pickering (Advertising), and Barbara Myers (Circulation) have carried out their jobs well. Pat Pierce, as Art Editor, has contributed some original and appealing art features to Spotlight. Special credit also goes to Eugene Mirabelli who has contributed poetry, a short story, a feature article, art work, and three very original covers to date. OPERETIA Third Row: B. Booker, D. Another Gilbert and Sullivan success was staged this year by Mrs. Sandberger and her talented choruses. This time it was the Mikado, charming in both music and plot. Two casts of unusual ability performed both nights and proved they could do justice to Gilbert and Sullivan. Officers were as follows: President, Carolyn Maxwell; Vice-president, Donna Goyette; Secretary, Marjorie Samsel; Librarians, Lorna Bowlby and Florence Carroll. We have sung at a few assemblies and sang at the Music Festival held in Medford, the first time this festival has been held since the war. Lorna Bowlby and Claire Martin have helped Mrs. Sand- berger by accompanying the girls. Our soloist was Marjorie Samsel. During the football season we learned marching. At times, Marjorie, Marlene, and Dorothy, the three drum majorettes, became quite disturbed about the form, but when the time came they were really proud of the job that the band did. Burton, Ken, Bill and Jim entertained the rest of the band a good many times with the “Jam” sessions before and after rehearsals. Mr. “Doctor’’ Gillespie has put a lot of time and effort into mak- ing the band a success. They have proved their ability at assemblies and when they played at a lec- ture at Cary Hall. Samborski, P. Sheldon, B. Ferguson, B. Rivinius, B. Fisk. This year’s cheerleading squad was “tops”. Their “pep” and “zip” helped pull the teams out of many a tight spot. The snappy blue and yellow uniforms didn't hurt one bit either. Cheerleaders are picked because of their vivaciousness, vim, and vigor. Patsy Whalen was on the squad for three years and cap- tain for the last two. When the cheering volume was below par, Patsy's smiling criticism and “Hip, hip go” provided the remedy. Brenda Phillips, Mary Jane Samborski, and Barbara Fisk were the other seniors. Brenda's spirit and know-how were always there in abun- dance. Mary Jane’s appeal never failed, and her energy was boundless. Barbara's winsome approach always gave that extra ‘lift’ when it was needed. . The other four talented underclass squad members were Barbara Rivinius, Pat Sheldon, Betty Ann Ferguson, and Joanne Stevens. FIELD HOCKEY Third Row: Miss Leavitt, D. Miller, B. Lindsay, B. Myers, P. Miss Leavitt's field hockey team had a brilliant season, shone in scores, teamwork, spirit, and sportsmanship. The girls won three games, tied two, and lost one. All their games were hard to win, but with the team’s hard fighting and un- failing. spirit, they couldn't help but come out on top. Here are some of the girls who helped to place their team on top. First, we have Jean Thompson, excellent captain and a fine left fullback. Her excellent playing is an asset to the team. With the speed of Maddy Fitch, Barb Rivinius, Irma Jane, and Bettie Ahearn, many a team was baffled. The high scoring and great ability of Mary Jane Samborski, Pat Whalen, and Nancy Harrington have showed that the win- ning scores were well-earned victories. GIRLS BASKETBALL Third Row: D. Miller, P. Co-captains Claire Burke and Pat Whalen, excellent guards, led Lexington’s fast-moving sextet to many victories this year. Liz Gates and Irma Jane Webb, veterans, are forwards on the first string team. Newcomer to our first team, Frannie Lindsay from Somer- ville has played.some excellent games. Rae Findlay made the first team after two years of hard work. On January 18, Lexington’s first and second teams were invited to Radcliffe College to play Watertown. Both of our teams played four stiff quarters to win. Our first game was with Reading, at Lexington, January 9. The school spirit for girls’ basketball this year has been out- standing, more so than in previous years. SOFTBALL Second Row: M. DeWolfe, M. Clifford, B. Clifford, S. McDonald, B. Ahearn, B. Phillips, J. Hunt, J. Thompson, D. Kelley, L. Wilson, Miss Leavitt. = First Row: P. Peterson, C. Shaw, M. Rycroft, I. Webb, M. Brown, L. McLaughlin, J. Lee. With the coming of spring, the softball team was called out with the hopes of having another successful season. Those who haven't seen our girls in action may like to know some- thing. about our players. First comes our coach. Miss Leavitt has spent a great deal of time training the girls to be good players and also good sporismen. Irma Webb, pitcher and captain, has proved to be every bit as good a player as expected. With her fast pitched balls many games were won. Betty Ahearn, Lois Wilson, Jean Thompson, Brenda Phillips, and Margaret Brown also helped to contribute to many suc- cessful games of the season. OIBALL Fourth Row: J. Patterson, B. Revou, B. Copp, C. O'Connell, I. Sherwood, W. Ormord, P. B ieren, P. Samborski, R. Brooks. Third Row: F. Sullivan, D. DeWolfe, B. Hosford, N. Newlands, J. Lexington High Varsity, under Coach Cooper, played good football throughout the season. With six returning lettermen, co-captains Ken Cox and Bob Catalano, Connie Buck, Jack Bailey, Bob Holmes, and Tom Maloney, the team gave great promise. Opening against Class C Champions, Winchester, Lexington played hard but was finally overpowered. The following week, Lexington defeated Wellesley, a team we have not beaten in years. More accomplishments of the Lexington team were the de- feats of Needham and powerful Howe High, a team we have never beaten before. Hard-hitting fullback Maloney played -good steady ball throughout the season. Other senior players include Joe Con- ner, Allen Conner, Bob Olford, Jack and Gene Leary, Dick Gritfiths, Lou Marotta, Frank Kace, and George Arthur. Third Row: P. Bieren, R. Lynah, B. Oldford, P. Woodward, M. Uhrig, D. MacKay. This year the Lexington hockey team started the season with the title of the League’s Defending Champions. With six returning lettermen led by Captain Connie Buck, last year’s leagues high scorer, they had high hopes. Out of their first three games they won two and tied one. Then after two up- sets to Malden and Brookline, they swept over Wakefield 6-0. The starting line, centered by Connie Buck, included Dick Woodard, a fine skater, and Bob Armstrong, a very aggressive forward. Don McKay, last year’s outstanding defenseman, Ken Bushnell and Miles Uhrig made up a'tight defense. Ray Brooks, Jim Kenny, and Bob Hosford, three fine players, made up a fast, aggressive second line. Thanks should be given to Tom Moon who did a wonderful job of coaching. BASKETBALL Fourth Row: J. Busa, A. Miller, J. Shoemaker, N. Dewing, L. Zehner, B. Brown, J. Rudd. Third Row: O. Brown, R. Galvin, D. Hathaway, C. Merrill, R. White, D. Ross, D. Gleason, D. Lehan, Mr. Abell. Second Row: D. Albertine, D. Parker, M. Coscia, Capt. T. Maloney, C. Sykes, J. Packard, K. Rycroft. First Row: D. West. The class of “47’’ did not have a large crop of basketball stars, but what it lacked in quantity it made up for in quality. The line senior on the hoop squad was big Tom Maloney. Tom, as captain, was an inspiration to the inexperienced team. Tom finished the season among the league's topcomers. This team with its fighting spirit was a credit to the school. Tom, John Packard, Charlie Sykes, Dick Parker, Lou Zehner, and Ken Rycroft at the forward position were a talented group of high scorers. At the guards Manny Coscia teamed with any of four boys, Don Albertine, Chuck Merrill, Bill Brown, and Nathan Dewing. Tom was not entirely alone as a senior for managers Rus- sell Fay and Dudley West were members of the class of “47” Third Row: M. Coscia, D. Parker, P. Bieren, D. Eunson, J. Eunson, E. Boynton, F.
