The graduating class of 1946 may look back to one of the most successful football seasons in many years. In spite of several thoroughly disheartening “breaks”, the team never lost its buoyant spirit. Mere records, however, can never relate the whole story. They can never tell, for instance, of the stunned look on the faces of a cocky Reading team when the flighty Lexington eleven marched down the field for a dramatic first period touchdown. They can never tell of the anguish of a team when a touchdown is called back for an offside penalty. We could reminisce for pages about the 0-0 deadlock with an ‘inferior’ Howe team, about the Lexington squad at its best in its sweeping victory over Needham, or about the “conquering” of Concord and their “reconquering’ on the Rta-Grid Quiz on WEBS Z, Let it suffice to say that this year’s squad was a team that rose to meet its opponents and that continued to battle until the finish whistle. Oldford, K. Bushnell, Capt. J. Lowe, H. Wheeler, D. MacKay, C. DeWolfe, M. Uhrig. Captained by Johnny Lowe, our hockey team has had a very successful season, Out of eight league games, we have won six, tied one, and lost one. Harvard Junior Varsity and the Middlesex School have bowed to the clever shooting and the stonewall defense of our team, _ As this book goes to press, we are tied with Natick for first place in the Middlesex County League. Our one remaining league game is with the Hudson team which we have defeated once. Since Coach Tom Moon had ample material for two equally good teams, we had a set-up that could discourage the best that any other school had to offer. This, plus Tom Moon’s excellent coaching, enabled us to continue our tradition of being one of the best hockey teams in New England. BASKETBALL Back Row Coach Abell, R. Fay, R. Parker, J. Packard, R. For another season ‘Doc’ Abell had a top-flight basketball team, With all but one of last year's letter men returning and with much promising material coming up from both last year’s squad and from Junior High, it would seem that the team should have been invincible. Yet, there was one lack that could have caused a basketball team much trouble -— no six-footers. It was up to “Doc” to adopt a new strategy. Th e first try against Reading was not entirely successful; but after a little shuffling of positions, the team clicked for the re- mainder of the season and stayed in the top running in the league. The boys showed a fighting spirit that was not excelled by any other team and a finesse of technique that was of the highest caliber. Back Row: F. Rymes, G. Arthur, B. Phalen, B. (Sane J. Bailey, D. The girls’ field hockey team started its season by beating Wellesley 2-0 and by losing to Winchester 1-0. In the Belmont game the girls showed their ability to win by defeating their opponents 1-0. The next two games, Melrose and Concord, were ties, 1-1. Coach Leavitt and all the fans agreed that the game with Arlington was both exciting and well played, even though the girls came out on the bottom of a 2-1 score. Two of our players, Maddy Fitch and Jean Thompson, were selected to play in the “all star’” game. It was not an excepti onal season, but this team under the expert guidance of Coach Leavitt had both teamwork and fun — valuable fundamentals of any sport. aL BASKET Back Row: B. Birch, J. Captain June Hosford of this yeat’s varsity basketball squad has led a scrappy, energetic team to victory in all the games to date; namely, Burlington, Reading, Belmont, Concord, and Winchester. Although trailing at times, the team was victorious because of the inspiring pep talks of Coach Leavitt and the excellent coordination of the players. The seniors on the team are Captain June Hosford, Mildred Rycroft, Peggy Fitzgerald, Bernadette Kelley, Mary Dailey, Barbara Birch, Fileen Stuart, Val Loring, and Joan Lahti. Burri, who proved his efficiency and good leadership in that position. Much of the credit for the success of this publication sh ould, go to Miss McIntyre, whose advice proved very helpful in the meeting of our problems. Other faculty advisors whose aid was greatly appreciated were Miss Lunt and Mr. Moyle. te Back Row’: E. Burri, Mr. Allison, D. Cronin. Middle Row: G. Jackson, B. Burke, H. Barnes, P. Trenholm, A. At the first meet- ing Dan Cronin was elected editor-in-chief and Alan Stoney, business manager, The staff decided to have printed programs for all the home football games and to put out a gala eight page issue for the annual Concord contest. The first issue of the Spotlight, was in magazine form and embodied many im- provements over the issue of preceding years. The second issue marked the resignation of Dan Cronin. Dan, who had been with the Spotlight for three years, felt that he could no longer give enough time to the LHS publication. During the next month, Nan Stoffregen was forced to resign as feature editor, and Jean Polley was elected in her place. Deciding to have the magazine printed by the Adams Press in the future, the staff directed its flow of energy into issuing one high quality edition each month. OPERETTA Back Row: D. Pierce, P. Healy, J. Mealey, D. Goyette, B, Birch. In April the musically inclined students of Lexington High School presented another of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas, ““Ruddigore, or the Witch’s Curse’. As in the past, the cast, under the capable direction of Mrs. Sandberger, gave two performances. This year, however, for the first time there was a double cast of boys’ and girls’ leads, an innovation which revealed previously unknown talent among our modest ‘“‘crooners’’. The success of this finished production was due, in a very great part, to the efforts of Miss Dainty and Miss Fencer, director and assistant director. Miss Spidle’s aid on business matters was greatly appreciated also. It is hoped that future senior plays will be as thoroughly enjoyed, both by the audience and by all who made the play possible. STUDENT COUNCIL Back Row: E. Burri, R. Parker, D. Cronin, R. Holmes, Mr. Moyle. Middle Row: R. Vaughan, President; J. Lindsay, A. Gramstorff, P, Whalen, N. Wellington, J. Bailey, J. Packard. Front Row: B. Samsel, S. Du nn, ‘R. Reynolds, H. Kelley, M. Gleason, B. Rivinius, Miss Fencer. The Council is an important student committee, designed primarily to deal with problems confronting our school and its pupils. The officers are Dick Vaughan, president; Bob Holmes, vice-president; Ann Gramstorff, secretary; and Conrad Buck, treasurer. The Council itself is made up of four members from the sophomore class, six from the junior, and ten from the senior, (These members are elected to their office by the class which they represent.) The Council has two faculty advisers, Miss Fencer and Mr. Moyle, who offer their helpful suggestions to the group. The student council is a valuable asset to our school, since it gives the pupils an op- portunity to govern themselves in a democratic way. ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE Back Row: D. Cronin, Chairman B. Samsel, J. Donelly. Front Row. J. Sherwood, J. Hosford, Mrs. Nason, G. Kirkland. This year the Assembly Committee has provided the school with many interesting programs. Under the guidance of Mrs. Nason, the faculty adviser of the committee, the members, headed by Barbie Samsel, have brought us a variety of entertainment, consisting of community singing, forums on current problems, films and special holiday assemblies. CHEERLEADERS Front Row. B. Rivinius, M. Copp, N. Harrington, Captain P. Whalen, B. Birch, E. Fuller, J. Burgess, B. Fiske. Just by looking at this vivacious group of cheerleaders, it is easy to see that they would lend morale to any game. We consider them the best that Lexington High School has produced in many a year. Page 44 RENCH CLUB H. Kelley, R. Reynolds, J. Polley, N. Browne French Club has had a very successful year. Meetings were usually held the second Monday of every month in the auditorium. The programs consisted of a business meet- ing conducted in French, followed by French plays, songs, and short biographies of famous French men. After each meeting, refreshments were served in the lunchroom. This year, as an additional feature, the club sponsored some never-to-be-forgotten French films. Mme. Leake was again our faculty advisor.
