Q th nx XYJZA 02 Life is a play and we are the players with the world as our stage. One mightier than we has cast the parts and, in time, we shall play them to the finish. The cos- tumes vary and are forever changing. Each scene is more complex than the last and leads to the conclusion of the play. Our scripts have been partially written, and it is for us to complete them. The quality with which we perform as actors determines the importance and value of our time on the stage. We cannot limit our usefulness and availabilityvbecause of the necessity of innumerable characters. Ben Jonson described Shakespeare as not of an age but for all times. Because this is true, William Shakespeare's philosophies and ideas apply appropriately to us as students in 1966. Today we are experiencing the school-boy age of Shakespeare's seven ages of man. With the age of infancy behind us and our years as students quickly coming to an end, we see before us the ages of the lover and the soldier. To many of us, this age of the soldier is coming all too soon. Our parts in the play are leading onto the battlefields about which Shakespeare so often wrote. But, because there are three acts left in the play, we cannot cease our acting. For the brightness and meaning that the Works of this great Englishman can add to our lives, we, the 1966 LEXICON Staff make William Shakespeare and his contributions to the world the theme of this, your annual. Determination, intelligence, and firmness e the ingredients that make a great football ach. This year Lexington's football team as fortunate to have not one, but four coaches ith these characteristics. The team's record rifles this point. At the beginning of the otball season the Yellow Jackets were not pposed to win half of their games, yet, be- use these four men had the faith and cour- e to work beyond the call of duty, their am made the state playoffs. CAPTAIN Frederick Cabell Philpott A large part of the Jackets' success this year can be attributed to Captain Ted Phil- pott. His job was not an easy one. Rocky roads, like Kiddie Kamp and the Burlington game, brought out Ted's greatest qualities of leadership. He was always an inspiration on and off the field to all his teammates. Ted won many outstanding honorsg however, he will be remembered longer for his dedication and never-say-die spirit. THE TEMPEST Here we end our attempt to bring you a life-long remembrance of this year's exploits. With the closing of the school year, we, with mixed emotions, must close your annual. lts purpose has been to preserve memories for you, the faculty and stu- dent body, of your parts in this act of life. The l966 LEXICON required the devoted work of a number of people. To each of these' we express proud gratitude. To photographer Mr. Claude Gentry and School Pictures, Inc., Mr. Cliff Ingram, Mr. H. Lee Waters, and our own fine staff photographer Clark Smith, we express gra- cious thanks for making possible the many pictures of the year's events. We thank you for your time, effort, and expense. For his art work on the inside of the covers, a special thanks to Chip Holton, whose mother, Bobbie Green Holton, was the first LEXICON Editor. Miss Matthews did an expert job of working with the staff and Mr. Joe Phelps of Edwards and Broughton Publishing Company of Raleigh. These two ex- perienced advisors worked diligently and patiently to teach us the art of editing an an- nual we hope you will enjoy. The entire class section of individual pictures is credited to the efforts of our class editors. Our appreciation goes to Robyn Beck, Windon Blanton, Lynn Dunn, Steve Erickson, Joe Hooker, Steve Raker, Suzanne Reynolds, and Carol Young who also worked as the staff typist. Thank you Jack Mundy and Andrea Carrick for the club section. Becky Chambless, thanks for editing features, and Jill Leonard for editing organizations. And thank you Ted Philpott and Charlie Mauze for drawing up the sports section in this year's annual. We must extend a definite thanks to William Shakespeare for the use of his works in our yearbook, and thank you, the student body and faculty members of Lex- ington Senior High School, for being the actors upon our stage. May the i966 LEXICON always hold happy memories for you, and may you trea- sure it, because it is yours.
