During these past four years, the NEW FRONTIER has faced tragedy and triumph just as we in Lexington have. The Bay of Pigs invasion, the Cuban and Berlin crises, the limited but horrid war in Vietnam, the Thresher tragedy, and the malicious assassination of Presi- dent John F. Kennedy have been times of national anxiety during the past four years. Likewise, in Lexington there have been events and times we should like to forget. Deaths of fellow students that could so often havebeen prevented, the shocking death in June, 1963, that put our town on the map as a place of disorder and racial violence, the death of H. C. Philpott, Lt. Governor of North Carolina, and the less important, but still disappointing jousting from No. 1 position in basketball, 1963, and foot- ball, 1963, made us realize that life has some sorrows and disappointments. However, there have also been times of happiness during the early sixties. The NEW FRONTIER has brought about a better understandin525bgtwg,gQ,,,,,'1 it EAST and WEST, has safely sent UP seven aS,, - ,,,,,, a l S Corps to show the world we that even 'God eader sti the adminis and nationally, had its own L ' feel office past years been same the same EXICON that f ur: the be a e. must the present but also 0 , The his country LEXINGTON LEXINGTON SENICR HIGH rw v Q, ?? T'-Sf gf... tm- I ,yur Dedication Mrs. E. Paul Sink Consider that I labouxred not for myself only, but for all them that seek learning? Warmth, wisdom, and Wit, combined in perfect proportion with a distinctive personality and infinite patience, make a unique teacher. Re- specting this delightful combination, we dedicate, with deepest admiration and fondest thanks, this-the 1964 LExIcoN-to Mrs. E. Paul Sink. MRS. E. PAUL SINK Superintendent MR. L. E. ANDREWS A man whom all the students admire and respect is Mr. L. E. Andrews, the superintendent of Lexington city schools. Due to his consistently good work for more than twenty-five years, the educational facilities in Lexington have been constantly improved. It is partly through his fine work that we have the opportunity of an excellent education. Because of this work, we may find the frontier easieruto conquerg for the secret to the frontier lies in education. Principal MR. C. E. WIKE One of the most familiar figures to students of Lexington Senior High is that of Mr. C. E. Wike, the principal. A capable adminis- trator, Mr. Wike is also a friend to the students and faculty. During his years at L.S.H.S., Mr. Wike has proven his ability and willingness as he has successfully guided our school. It is some- times difficult to realize all the time, energy, and personal effort which Mr. Wike continuously puts into his role as principal of Lexington Senior High School. A i ,. it ix, 1 W ! How ever, when We did have a moment to our selves, We talked, laughed, and planned for the future. There were the same faces the same classes, and the same routine, yet each day was a challenge and a new chance for those who would take it. Instead, most of us spent our time in class longing for the the routine. For a long time the world of l place .... Then one day someone, a Wise places of our own choosing. CLASSES CLASSES . . . the reason for the school and the means of our education. One hun dred and eighty days a year for four years we walked the too-crowded halls, opened the too-small lockers, and rushed off to the too-short lunch periods. Most of the hours spent at school and in classes belonged to someone besides ourselves, either to a bell to free us, or for an assembly to break blackboards, chalk, pen, ink, paper and books seemed a dull or, at least, placid teacher or friend, helped us to realize that these classes were more than a place of confinement for four years-they were our passports to the future-the NEW FRON TIER-and the passports took us to the Classes Freshmen As freshmen we were hesitant to accept our new roles. L.S.H.S. seemed strange and sometimes frightening. We were the silly freshmen, and the upperclassmen never let us forget it. But we were a part of the school, and as the year passed Wet became Willing and eager to link ourselves with the school and its activities. Loudly we yelled, We're from Lexington, couldn't be prouderf' for we were happy to be a part of the world of Lexing- ton Senior High School. Sophomores No longer freshmen and feeling much older than a year ago, we began our sophomore year. Retrac- ing our steps throughout the building that we now considered home, we gazed at the familiar sights and the bewildered, lost freshman. Hours in the biology lab increased our knowledge of the func- tions of life, and our second contacts of life . . . for we continued to participate in our school'S activities. Classes Juniors When we became Juniors, we were given more privileges and more responsibilities. This year was very different and much more exciting than last .... We sold during the football games for money for the Junior-Senior, attended the Junior-Senior, wore class rings, and drove cars. Familiar lockers, halls, and faces greeted us, and We greeted the under- classmen with an attitude of friendliness but aloof- ness . . . for now we were the upperclassmen, and there was only one year left until graduation. . . Seniors The senior year-the final year-and how Wonder- ful it seemed to us. For us it was the last-the last game, the last pep rally, the last Junior-Senior, the last assembly. How proud We were as We came down the aisle for Senior Assembly, the assembly we could now call our own. As we came down that aisle for the last time, we really saw for the first time all that had made up our high school year. We looked back triumphantly, knowing we had con- quered the first of many frontiers. But in the final analysis we realized that only a small part of the frontier had been conquered, for throughout life there would be other frontiers to face, and we were still very young. . As the year progressed. we grew to love Truls for his more intangible traits. The warm friendliness, quick wit, and good naturedness which Truls possessed quickly en- deared him to all of us. Truls was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Banks Hankins while he lived in Lexing- ton. The Hankins children -Pat, Joe, Gary, and Bebe-were Trulis Ameri- can brothers and sisters who helped him to enjoy his year with us. Those of us who have been fortu- nate enough to know Truls personally will remember him as an exceptional friend and student from Norway. When we in Lex- ington can enjoy the friend- ship of a boy like Truls, we deeply realize the value of the American Field Service. ff' I A happy laugh, a smile that lights up for the slight- est reason, and an unmis- takable Argentine accent on otherwise perfect Eng- lish were the characteristics which Martha Occhi had to help her win many friends in Lexington. Mar- tha came to us from Argen- tina, and she was one of the most popular exchange students that L.S.H.S. ever had. Because she was will- ing to participate in any- thing that we in senior high would, she was quickly ac- cepted as a valuable mem- ber of the senior class. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Calhoun with their daughters Jean, Ellen, Susan, and Anne were Martha's host for the year. We shall miss that happy smile when Martha returns home, but we shall never forget it. The first feature is home- coming, and with it come several memorable events: the pep rally at noon to boost the team and crown the lovely homecoming queen, the colorful parade with the floats, the band, and all the pretty sponsors, the game with all the excitement that special games always have, and the dance where we can enjoy being with our friends and thinking over the events of this past home- coming. When the Tri-Hi-Y has its annual Coronation, it is a time of loveliness and make-believe. The land of make-believe seems to come alive, and the girls in long, flowing dresses and the magical decorations a o to the illusion The queens that the se ors pick to represent them at events dur 'I' e girls are our special representatives hey serve us well by being such lovely ambassadors for us. For our clubs we made money, built homecoming floats, planned assemblies, and paid dues. Soon it became apparent that only through hard work and ardent support could our clubs be successful. In clubs we became better acquainted-we shared our experiences with those who not too long ago had been only nameless faces in the halls. Not common backgrounds or old friendships, but the same interest, made up the memberships in our clubs. Consequently we broadened our out- look and experienced more than we possibly could have without clubs. Yes, we became aware, and this awareness was the most valuable trait that we could obtain-for the frontier is only there for those who are aware of the opportunity and wonder it holds. In the tense moments of the games, we became an integrated part of our school's activities. Wins and losses alike were our personal ones, and it was never 'ta teamw but our team. The wondrous touchdowns-and there were many this year-never ceased to amaze us, and as our own Y. A. Tittles passed for touchdown after touchdown, we felt proud of the boys playing for us .... On the occasion when anger at defeat made us want to find revenge in forms we would soon have regretted, the calm and wise leadership of Coach Mull was a source of unending inspiration .... Basketball arrived while we were still discussing football, and Callicutls boys came on strong and sure. We held our breath as L.S.H.S.'s Billy Cun- ninghams and Frank Christys tossed the ball up into the air and down into the basket .... We won this year by two forces-the force of our teams playing and believing that they could win, and the force of our student body cheering the team on to show that we were behind them. It is impossible to say which force had the most influence, for each force depended upon and grew from the other. The SPORTS that we watched or participated in welded us into one large team-the school. Q F 2 ADVERTISEMENTS . . . they mean about the same thing in all the annuals-the end of an annual and the finishing of a school year. These ads help pay for the annual, and they give us space for writing in our annuals. However, these advertisements mean much more than this-they show that the present business leaders have faith in us, the future leaders, and that they are willing to invest in our publication. This shows communication between the older and younger people in our city. The advertise- ments give us a glimpse of the frontier, the future, and what it holds .... This finis marks the end of another LEXICON and the end of another year, but it also points to the future. With the ending of this year, the next year begins. Before turning to the next year, we the editors of this 1964 LEXICON would like to say Thank You to those on this year's staff. The LEXICON could not have been published without the hard work of the following people: the Class Editors, Jane Myers, Byron Burkehart, Jean Calhoun, Ed Zimmerman, Jo Philpott, Dicky Morgan, Betsy Burrell, and Sue Beck, the Sports Editors, Hugh Bingham, Wayne Berrier, and Gordon Wright, the Feature Editor, Judy Mauze, the Club Editors, Sydney Young and Elaine Hornbuckleg the bookkeepers, Judy Barber and Lynn Elkins, the typist, Betty Hemphill, and the photographers, Mr. Cliff Ingram, Mr. Claude Gentry, and Joe Ingram. Finally, we would like to say a special Thank You to the two people who have guided this year's LEXICON from a dream into a reality. Miss Charlotte Matthews who has not only advised but also worked hard on the LEXICON, and Mr. Joseph Phelps of Edwards 8z Broughton Company who has been both helpful and patient. Their inspiration has been invaluable. Only endings which come prematurely are sad. The endings which follow completed duties are happy ones. The heinous part of John F. Kennedy's death was that death caught him when he had only started to reach his goals. There was still so much he could give to his young family, his powerful nation, his progressing world. On election eve of November 1960, a young Bostonian addressed a group of people with these words: I run for the Presidency of the United States because it is the center of action and, in a free society, the chief responsibility of the President is to set before the American people the unfinished business of our Country. The young man won the election, and for 2 years, 10 months, and 2 days, John F. Kennedy worked on the unfinished business of his country. Then a rankish bullet shot him down, and the business remained unfinished. The great knowledge, the profound insight, and the deep concern for the nation and the world vanished, leaving the people stunned and bewil- dered. John F. Kennedy tried to pass on this knowledge, insight and con- cern for mankind. Whether or not he accomplished this, one cannot tell. Only in the coming years, when we have had the chance to finish the work John F. Kennedy started, will we realize the significance of the ideas and ideals of the 35th President of the United States. Success on the frontier may well depend on how well we can finish the business of the NEW FRONTIER. ' Jia 9,45 Wiki, QM... ma... 1 - ' ' ' ' .
