In Appreciation In appreciation for his twenty-tive years of service to the Lexington City School system, the LEXICON staff would like to devote these two pages to our friend, Mr. L. E. Andrews. Under his leadership vast improvements in buildings, facilities, and the quality and advantages oEered pupils in Lexington have brought Lexington City schools to a prominent position among the better school systems in North Carolina. 1 In 1937 Lexington had only six schools, Robbins, Cecil, Holt, Grimes, Dunbar, and Lexing- ton High School. Since then expansions, new buildings, and facilities which have been added in- clude Dunbar High School, Lexington Senior High School, Pickett Elementary School, Eanes Ele- mentary School, South Lexington Elementary School, and an Administration Building. A new Lexington Junior High School is now in the planning stage. To many of these new schools and the old ones have been added auditoriums, additional classrooms, cafeterias, multi-purpose rooms, and libraries. The enrollment of teachers has advanced from eighty-nine in 1937 to 194 at present, and the enrollment of students has advanced from 3,149 in 1937 to 5,178 at present. Mr. Andrews, although he has an extremely time-consuming job, is active in civic affairs. He exemplifies his sincere interest in his work by his presence at the important activities and events of the eleven schools under his direction. Mrs. Andrews, also prominent in civic affairs, is organist at First Baptist Church and is a member of Lexington Music Study Club. The Andrews' two sons, Mitchell and L. E. Andrews, Jr., are students at Wake Forest College and High Point College respectively. The LEXICON staff and the student body extend to Mr. Andrews their sincere appreciation and thanks for his twenty-five years of service as Superintendent of Lexington City Schools. L 5 L U l .
